A Requiem is a song written for death and mourning. This requiem is a song written in lou of the death of a friend's father. With death comes grief, something more complicated than I can explain with words or music alone. Grief doesn't end quickly. You can try move on, but every once and a while, it suddenly all comes back, bringing with it memories that are, and that could have been. I'm not good with words, so I wrote a piece for solo piano, something that might give a small glimpse of the unexpected nature of death, the sorrow that comes from death, and loneliness that death leaves you with.

I spoke with an elderly woman yesterday whose husband died a few months ago. "It just hit me this morning," she said, "This will be my first Thanksgiving without him." She broke down in tears and in turn my heart broke for her. Her words stuck with me, and when I got home I started to compose.

I've never really talked about this before, but I have a somewhat unusual method of writing lyrics. I first create a melody and then as I listen, I start to sing a vocal melody alongside the music and simply use the first words that come to me as lyrics (to start things off). I know this seems almost ludicrous, but I've found that my subconscious can give form to what's really on my mind before I can consciously vocalize it.

Fall away,

Forgetting what I knew,

As I began to sing these words, I honestly didn't know what I was saying.

One by one they slip away,
To the void 'twixt dark and gray,

Once a giant now a slave,
That no tears can hope to save,

Now I was beginning to understand - it's about my Grandfather. For those of you that don't know, my Grandfather, in the later years of his life, suffered from Alzheimer's disease. In a matter of months, I saw a man I regarded as a giant among men reduced, before my very eyes, to a pitiful husk - a twisted shadow of a once great man. When he died, obviously it was painful for all of us, but we knew that he had gone to a better place. We knew that the pain and anguish and confusion were now gone.

Working on this song was agonizing. On multiple occasions I had to stop because I kept breaking down into tears. But even in tragedy there is hope and in music there is catharsis; there is healing and there is the door to a better tomorrow.
