In Gerrit's paintings, or as better known Gherardo delle Nights, the influence of Italian painting is evident in the use of light in his paintings. The name suits him because in his works the scenes are shrouded in intense darkness and the subjects are illuminated by torches and candlelight. The light source is always artificial, which is why his style of painting is also referred to as “by night light”.
