Amusing Ourselves To Death

The widest boulevard in the world is in Buenos Aires, a symbol of the optimism and ambition of the Argentine capital at the turn of the century. Containing almost one third of the people of its nation, it takes center place in the economic and political landscape of Argentina. At one time a small Spanish town with Black slaves, it was transformed into a city of money and manufacturing by thousands of Italian immigrants. Under Juan and Evita Peron its luster began to fade, a victim of bad planning and bad economics. But its magnificence is hard to undermine.

Friedrich Nietzsche was the great nineteenth century German philosopher who either charmed or terrified the European public. Rejecting Christian humility and the values of traditional religion, he fought to find a way for human beings to live with dignity. He found it in the concept of the 'overman', who celebrated his freedom from traditional constrains by embracing a new morality. This new morality is the central theme of one of his most profound books, Beyond Good and Evil. Nietzsche knows that the free man has no possibility to embrace his power unless he defines the rightness of his behavior by a new standard. This new standard finds virtue in the life of risk and adventure.

Friedrich Nietzsche - Beyond Good and Evil

One of the most improbable stories in the human saga is how a conquering Turkish nation converted to Judaism and established a powerful Jewish empire between the Caspian and Black seas. For many centuries the Khazars controlled the fertile steppes of southeastern Europe. Their armies intimidated the Christian Russians and the Muslim Arabs. Although in the end, they were crushed by their enemies, they left their legacy in the land which they had conquered. Some scholars speculate that many Ashkenazic Jews of Eastern Europe have their origins among the Khazars.

Charles Coughlin was one of the most powerful political figures in the Roosevelt era. Builder of the Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak, he was a radio priest who combined populism and anti-Semitism into a political movement for social justice. As an admirer of Hitler, his radio voice reached millions of people. Only the war intervened to silence him. He was a vivid reminder of the possibility of political religion in this country. In his heyday there were many people who saw him as the future president of the United States.
