Overstuffed chairs and overdressed women were the setting for the technological transformation of the world. The railroad and the steamship, the telegraph and the telephone, the tractor and the reaper were dramatic signs that the industrial change was indeed revolutionary. In England the amenities of private homes, including bathrooms, defined new levels of comfort. And the new machines were followed with new ideas like female suffrage and sexual liberation.
