The aim for this series has really ceased to be gaining listeners or a following. Really the goal is part practice and part mood board for my productions. This is a sonic documentation of my existence in this realm, uploaded to the cloud for perpetuity. These are not my own productions, but I believe mixing is a form of expression in itself, blending sounds together in sequence to create new feelings and emotions that tell a story that cannot be articulated through mere words alone. Thus, Into The Void all these expressions will go, maybe never to be felt or received in a way that could be qualified adequately by conventional standards of consumption that we know of today.

TYREL WILLIAMS (Immortal Sin, Secret Studio / SF)

Tyrel (@tyrelwilliams) was a mainstay of Chicago’s underground scene for years. He began mixing records in 1999. Soon later he landed a job at Gramaphone Records, where he spent many years building his collection of vinyl. He spent 2007-2011 building his Acid Test residency at Smart Bar, which was an all vinyl dance party in Chicago. In 2009 he took a job working with Jeff Mills and helping with Axis Records. Tyrel moved to San Francisco in 2011 where he is now a resident DJ for Housepitality, Acid Test, and Fleurs Du Mal. In 2014 he started a project with Bryan Bai-ee called Secret Studio with releases on their own label, Secret Studio Records. His next venture is his new vinyl label with C.L.A.W.S. called Immortal Sin, with the two releases featuring I.B.M. on the first record and Bill Converse on the second.

This mix was recorded for Housepitalty back in May 2020. Tyrel was feeling his old deep house collection, so he wanted to tap into that and play some of his favorite deep house records.

He is a resident DJ and founding member of The Black Lodge, an LA based event collective and record label that has been pushing mutant strains of underground dance music to the masses since 2015. Known for his versatility as a DJ and live PA artist, Jason’s performances run the gamut from soulful and cerebral house music to mind-bending acid techno. Force Placement | Fault Radio DJ Set in Los Angeles (September 27, 2020)

For Walking & Falling October's installment, we bring you a mix from Brooklyn-based DJ Lychee. This recording is a set they performed at Nowadays :)

A DJ, writer, and event organizer, Lychee (they/them) runs Spontaneous Affinity, a monthly mix and interview series, annual zine, and occasional event platform focused on how dancefloors have shaped artists. Most recently, they released a zine, "Behind the Party", focusing on the experience of workers in the dance music industry during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With a very slow build of industrial and ambient tones, Lychee weaves their way through tunes effortlessly. By the second half they pick up the pace, having us longing for the dance floor with bouncy techno grooves. It's a collage of sounds that we hope you all will dig!

Our baby Speed Queen of the south, Idalia(@eye_dalia) gave us a mixtape! Her energy can light up any corner of the dance floor, where we found her dancing her ass off, seemingly at EVERY good dance floor in New Orleans or anywhere.  We love her unbridled passion for fast dance music and we were delighted to see her easy transition from one side of the DJ booth to the other here in New Orleans. 

In her words,
"I got into dance music at a very young age because it was a way for me to create my own identity in an immigrant household. it was something different, it was a way for me to escape the pressures of being a picture perfect 1st generation born. That’s not the life I wanted. I remember being 9 or 10 and listening to Binary Finary’s 1998 on my Walkman and just zoning out feeling at ease, and just imagining myself at a club or something. Dance music with its culture & political roots has empowered me as a POC womxn with an alternative lifestyle and being surrounded in a community with like-minded individuals is what keeps me in dance music. being able to curate a musical experience for someone else to dance freely to, to take them on a journey or to empower them, is what keeps me grounded in dance music".
