Our 49th SoHaSo podcast is courtesy of Amsterdam-based Anne Korteweg aka https://soundcloud.com/villete. She has been releasing her blissful electronica since 2016, including a very nice addition to our SOMEWHERE IV compilation back in 2020. Korteweg really takes us on a journey on this mix. It starts out puffing, scratching and tingling with the pure joy of ambient textures, before sprinkling bits of dubby electronics and piano motifs on top. Villete demonstrates a keen ear for subtlety, patience and cohesion, weaving tracks together in such a way it feels like they were always meant to be heard in this particular context. All in all, an hour of beautiful meditative music. Thanks Anne!

My next guest is Echology, a music producer and DJ from Mielec, Poland. 
Echology is specialised in dub techno, ambient, deep techno and  genres of deep electronics. 

Besides self-publishing music, he has released tracks on labels such as Drift Deeper, Scale Limited, Crossfade Sounds, Apnea, hello strange, Techenie, insectorama. 

Having a background as a bass player, he tends to favour productions with deep and emphasised basslines and puts major focus on rhythm. 

Working daily as a musician and sound engineer, Echology tends to experiment with sonics, tonality and rhythm in ways that overcome boundaries. 

He adapted an old school method of composing, using a mixture of hardware synthesizers and drum machines, guitar pedals, mixing console and DAW. Thus, his performances are never the same and each jam is unique and spontaneous.

In his DJ sets Echology pursues the same goal - deep and groovy bassline intertwine with soft yet punchy kick drums. Not straying from slower and softer grooves, his main focus are danceable dubbed out tunes invoking dreamlike audio mirage. 

Being a big time fan of old school Jamaican roots dub reggae, you can often hear some roots vocals in his selections.

This set is no exception to all above, so brace yourself for a trip into hypnotic grooves and minimalist ethereal soundscapes!

In the last few years, Miami has transformed into a hotbed of raw talent and one of its hallmarks is SEL.6, who also happens to be one of the finest artists originally out of Broward County. Jumpstarting her career with the widely revered and self-released Desire series and initiated into Miami’s scene via Space Tapes, the label that launched some of Miami’s most prized and internationally recognized dance music artists; she has woven herself into the fabric of the city’s underground telling the story of her Floridian identity and giving beauty and finesse to the sounds that encompass “Floridacore” in electronic music. Her productions are characterized by signature trancelike soundscapes, sampling inspired by a deep passion and respect for R&B, combined with crisp and powerful percussions while weaving between electro to breaks to hardgroove to jungle making her music perfect for any high ocassion and landing her onto labels like Allergy Season and Omnidisc. This energy transcends into the way she plays, always creating impactful and heavy dance floor moments cementing her as a gem in the city’s club culture. Truly a DJ’s DJ, a massive talent and a dear friend we have loved and watched grow alongside us. 

Secular Music is a sonic exploration rooted in Florida’s rich musical landscape. Blending 90's club influences, humid rhythms, emotive synths, and ethereally expressive textures. Blurring the line between the secular and the spiritual, the theme teases religious undertone, highlighting the irony of club music as both non-secular and deeply spiritual. Secular Music is a tribute to personal transitions, a deep connection to place, and the state’s vibrant music culture. The EP features Miami's own Coffintexts and a remix anthem by Miami Bass queen Jubilee.

Monolake - A 3 H 00 Special Mix Tribute

The ZamZam Sounds screen printed 7” vinyl journey concludes with a massive double pack link-up from Bristol legends Dubkasm & Gorgon Sound, not heard together on vinyl since Peng! Sound 12”s back in 2013 and 2018. ZamZam’s love for Bristol’s musical vibes and sound system culture and history is well-established, since kicking off the label with Henry & Louis ft. Prince Green’s “Every Time” in 2012. It’s only fitting that the series concludes in Portland’s sister city; but while ZamZam 01 was an unreleased deep cut from the 90s, the 99-100 double pack is a fully up to the minute dispatch. 

The set starts off with Dubkasm’s “The Return,” a heavy stepper in the duo’s brutal yet lush style; fleeting melodica and ephemeral flute float over a bed of heavy bassline and tough percussion. Alive with the sounds of nature, shot through with laser and siren, Dubkasm’s desk-as-instrument ethos is on full display with raw dubbing galore. Gorgon Sound’s remix ramps up the intensity with a lean, muscular, synth-driven rebuild that’s already proved to be a guaranteed rewind anywhere it’s played.

Gorgon Sound’s “Born Under Siege” is purest Gorgon while feeling like a new evolution in the pair’s unmistakable sound. Crystalline synthetic horns and strings interlace in a gorgeous melodic dance with buzzing mid-range synths and lacerating percussion over a dark martial riddim that’s both fully steppers and unlike anything we’ve heard in the idiom. Dubkasm’s crucial remix is thick, baroque and bombastic, a dubwise hall of mirrors and echoes that wrings every last drop of dub from the original. 

Pressed with each version on the B side of the opposite 7” for playing showcase style, ZamZam 99-100 are housed in a single full color offset-printed, double-die cut gatefold jacket with additional silver screen print. Lexachast is an ongoing collaborative work by Amnesia Scanner, Bill Kouligas & Harm van den Dorpel.

Initially birthed as a joint, improvised performance between Amnesia Scanner and Kouligas at the ICA, London in 2015, it was later recreated and extended with visual artist van den Dorpel into a 15-minute online-only audiovisual work – known simply as Lexachast.

Since then, it has expanded into a live show that has been performed at Transmediale, CTM Festival, Unsound Krakow & Adelaide, Next and LEV Festival and during Paris Fashion Week in collaboration with the brand Ottolinger. Now to be released on PAN, is a new document of Lexachast in its current, full-grown form.

Whilst broadly inspired by the experience derived from and exposure to algorithmic patterns as generated by visual artist Harm van den Dorpel’s specially-devised program, the work is a sonic reference to the fallouts of avant-EDM and cyberdrone. This in turn is simultaneously mirrored by the perturbing visuals, created by a unique algorithm that sources and blends various filtered imagery from DeviantArt and Flickr in real time – with a bias towards the NSFW, extreme banality, and ornamental melancholia. The results were a perfect fit for the deliberate intention of non-intent, an anti-video of sorts, which ended up as a defining element for the project.

The artwork is created with Harm van den Dorpel’s ever-evolving, image-sourcing algorithm and it is mastered by Rashad Becker at D&M, Berlin
