Banana'Cast 43 ➤ Solid Blake

Don't let @solid_blake's diminutive stature fool you: she plays with a ferocity and precision that flips Europe's most tasteful dance floors inside out. Born in Glasgow but operating out of Copenhagen, she was a founding member of the Apeiron Crew DJ collective, has produced as Historical Repeater with Ctrls and often plays with Mama Snake as she did at our own festival a few years ago. Her Rinse FM radio show is always packed with new sounds that have you desperate to find out more, as is this week's mix. 

It's built on bold, body-shaking rhythms that are elastic and acrobatic. They're loose and roomy to start before the kinetic energy builds through jungle cuts, thumping deep techno and unhinged club music. Though squarely aimed at the dance floor, these selections are detailed with freaky monologues or wild vocalisations that bring them to life outside the club. They're both deep but lively and run through with a subtle sense of party-starting fun.

Emma Blake is, musically, something of a nomad. She made her name—Solid Blake—that is, in Copenhagen, where she cofounded the influential Apeiron Crew alongside Mama Snake and Smokey. They were responsible in establishing the city's "fast techno" sound, which blended sleek techno and trance influences into something colourful and retro-futuristic. But Blake's side of things was always more rooted in electro, with a party-starting flair that you might be tempted to pin to her Glaswegian upbringing. (Her first release, <i>Mario</i>, came out on the label of the legendary Glasgow taps-aff basement nightclub La Cheetah.) And she's also spent time in Berlin, so she has those techno bona fides, too.

Another EP, released on Modeselektor's Seilscheibenpfeiler, further fleshed out her electro-techno hybrid sound, also explored in her Historical Repeater project with Danish artist Ctrls. DJing has been her major focus, though—she has an excellent Rinse FM show—and you'll hear a refined approach on her excellent RA Podcast, which is like a club set in miniature, starting out midtempo and rushing towards a heady climax with tracks like Pariah's "Squishy Windows." It's loaded with creative grooves, toothsome textures and the kind of sleek melodies that helped define her stint in Copenhagen since the beginning.

Francis Harris and Anthony Collins air their Breakaway edits on an exquisite house session.

Since 2012, the New York-based pair have been honing their vision of deep house across a singles on the Scissor and Thread label and their residency at Brooklyn's The Panther Room, gaining the support of DJ Sprinkles in the process. Last year, they released their debut album You Go Girl, which stayed true to the duo's deep house foundations while also exploring dubbier sounds indebted to Basic Channel et al.

Frank & Tony's FACT mix is entirely made up of their own edits, of Mogwai, Herbert, Roedelius and more. "Over the past few years as our sets became more and more focused on a vinyl format", the pair explain, "when faced with non-working turntables, the turn to digital became more and more of a challenge for us. The vinyl we digitized never sounded quite as good and we both had little patience for searching for music with online shops, so most of the time we were playing our own cuts, which, after a while also became tedious."

"As a result, we started making dancefloor edits of music that really inspired us both artistically and personally. These have now become a central part of our DJ performances from the digital side of the spectrum. The list of edits is growing rather exponentially, so we felt that with this mix we would give a little glimpse into this recent approach in our sets. In a way, this mix is a bit of a list of "greatest hits" in our minds, culminating in the ultimate homage to one of the masters, Roedelius."

Grouper's never grooved quite like this, in other words.

Restlessly creative Sacha Mambo delights in the unexpected, he began collecting records from the age of fifteen and considers himself somewhat ‘ayatollah’ about vinyl. Macadam Mambo was originally a DJ collective Sacha created in Paris during in 2008, later expanding to parties in Lyon. In 2012 Sacha together Guillaume Des Bois turned Macadam Mambo into a label, they have over sixteen vinyl releases to date, featuring Balearic house, disco edits, Synth-Pop, basically whatever happens to float their proverbial boat. Mambo has several releases to his own name with his debut album ‘From This Desire’ released under the MZKBX moniker on Karat Records in 2014. Here for us today Monsieur Mambo turns in an uber hallucinatory mix, sure to turn your dreariest day to tropical heat, your fears and pains to softcore massages, brandy shots and cherry chocolate sundaes.

Presence

This month we’ve got party starters Tokyo Fantasy taking the lead in our mix series. Cam and “Nervous” Fergus are the self-proclaimed music dork duo from London, whose diverse parties have hosted highly respected names like Tornado Wallace, Secretsundaze, Jamie Tiller, and previous guest mix contributor, Carista.

Whilst they have outgrown their reputation as “perpetual warm up DJ’s”, Cam and Fergus do know how to de-ice a crowd like no other. This is exactly what you’ll hear in this 1 hour 45 mins long mix, developing gradually from smooth-as-Sade tracks, to dubby instrumentals, into boogie, slow Italo, African voodoo, finishing off with some grade A disco. Absolute diggers delight, without any of the pretentiousness. As they say, break out the lambrini and enjoy.

Fresh on the trail of this year’s exceptional long player ‘Noir’, Steve Bug returns with perhaps his most deep house-oriented track in a while – ‘The Long Run’.

Teaming up with US house legend Mr. V, who inititally donated vocals only, the collaboration brought up Mr V‘s own interpretation of Bug‘s track. This release is as delicious a serving of classic New York deep house as you will hear all year – or any year.

Dessous’ main man is at the controls, riding out a sumptuous, Rhodes-driven groove that references golden era Kerri Chandler and friends, but remains completely rooted in 2012. Mr V’s spoken word vocal lays out the manifesto for these two house pioneers – both are committed to quality music, made with passion and respect.

Next stop on ‘The Long Run’ is Mr. V’s stunning take on the same track. Ratcheting up the percussive elements, the New York native injects hints of the Latin rhythms that define many of his productions, making this into a stone-cold club banger whatever the party.

Both tracks come with corresponding instrumental versions for the DJs, rounding out this irresistible release that continues Dessous’ outstanding run of releases this year.
