From the halftime explorations of Reeko on Samurai Music and Vardae & Toé on Monochrome to the mind-bending experimentations of Jin Synth on Fractal Phenomenon and warm analog electronica from MP101 courtesy of Ilian Tape, the month defied easy classification.
Bass enthusiasts will find themselves gravitating towards the infectious breaks and basslines of DJ Polo's Livity Sound release. Deep house devotees can find solace in the latest offering from Frank & Tony on Scissor & Thread.
Beyond the dancefloor, Mary Yalex offers a meditative ambient experience while Ocram Orchestra brings all the feeling with Toucheng alongside the exciting techno explorations of Neel and Foreign Material.

The moment I heard the opening few bars of Gary Numan’s “Are Friends Electric” my life changed. It was like a doorway opened into a new reality for me. An alien landscape that I felt oddly at home in. Music featured strongly in my childhood growing up as the younger brother of one of the founding fathers of punk rock in Australia. I began my musical life with intensity and have never really looked back. But from that moment back in 1979 synthesisers and electronic music have been an integral part of my musical expression. Along the way I have played in a couple of synth bands, studied classical piano, cello and recorder including a stint in the local symphony orchestra. Far and away the most creative thing I have done in my life is to become a parent. Its the agony and ecstasy of this that has I believe led to “In This Mode”. At any one time I operate in a different mode or role all of which are aspects of who I am but none of them completely defining me and so all the while I am a parent living through the roller-coaster ride of emotions that can involve another part of me is creating musical ideas.

Musical influences are probably to numerous to mention but heres some of it, some of the giants  of electronic music, Gary Numan, John Foxx, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Ultravox, Visage, Human League, Tangerine Dream leading into The Shaman, The KLF, Front 242,  Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins,  Sisters of Mercy, Orbital, Dead Can Dance and more recently Assemblage 23, VNV nation, and Royksopp just to name a few. Along the way lots of classical music found its way in there and a bit of Jazz as well. The list really is to long to list so I won’t but my thanks to any one who has ever provided musical inspiration. In This Mode is a reincarnation of a once dormant aspect of my  creative self using synthesisers and technology to create electronic dance, synth pop, downtempo and ambient music to put into form what has been formless for sometime.

Argentinian producers Oscean return to Tresor with Chronium Radiance, their longest release so far, in which the duo continue the evolution of their sound, coalescing the elemental ideas explored in their first two releases and yielding sublime results.

This landmark release will no doubt be seen as the point at which Oscean crystalised a trademark sound, balancing complex percussive rhythms with pulsing and cadenced music in which a universe of often oxymoronic ideas can be found, melded together with a deft touch to create a blissful sonic whole.

There is a sense of space and airiness to side A of the record as synth parts drift across the more solid-feeling landscape of the basslines and percussion: 
Opening track ChronoRebel is a propulsive trance induction that brings forth cinematic images of billowing clouds.
This nebulous quality is continued on Neon Harmonies where the highly syncopated drum track weaves through a haze of colourful synths that while lower tempo than the previous track somehow has an energy of a faster piece.

The flip side has a denser, darker quality to it beginning with Blaster Imploder, a deep and funky track that continues the convention-defying theme by being powerful and frenetic whilst also having a soft and exultant sheen. 
This is followed by Echoes of Chaos which closes out the 12" with a dynamic beat and spacious, sweeping synths that feel as though we are passing through the atmosphere heading towards some distant nebula.

Alongside the tracks on the vinyl release, three digital tracks expand on the universe Oscean have built with a truly ecstatic love theme, a retelling of Neon Harmonies that unveils a river of dub, and a low tempo, drifting yet no-less affecting piece acting as the closing titles to our voyage to this Osceanic world.

Ethereal inspirations are the name of today’s musical game as we look to Martin Respaut aka Foreign Material and his aptly titled, ‘Saturnian’ EP. Drawing inspiration from Saturnus, the god of time, transcendence and agriculture, Foreign Material has crafted a journey that moves seamlessly through the peaks and valleys of deep, hypnotic techno and beyond. On this EP, he’s also joined by Toffes Värld who provides a re-imagination of Saturnian Dub.

Above Abysmal Rivers is the last but certainly not least track of the Saturnian EP. Coming in as the digital bonus, Foreign Material slows things down to a rhythmic 98 bpm, providing that chuggy low slung vibe that is all over our Delayed HQ. Nicely textured synths add to the movement, fending off the repetitiveness, while a glittering melody builds and our favorite melancholic pads round out the atmosphere.

Foreign Material’s Saturnian EP will be released on the Navigare Audio imprint, March 29th.

DJ Polo returns to Livity Sound with an EP that moves beyond the UK funky styles he established alongside Tribal Brothers on The Link Up EP in 2021. Through his productions and steady online radio presence, the Bristol-based producer has been flying the flag for lean, punchy rhythms with a low-end focus, but on If The Glove Fits Polo has branched out to explore different tempos and sounds taking influence from gqom, techno and Afrobeats. 

Much like his approach to funky, this isn’t a set of genre exercises but more a celebration of the shared qualities which bind together dance music from different parts of the world. The result is four sharply-defined club workouts unique to DJ Polo that balance tension and release, flair and subtlety and a consistent physical weight true to Livity’s emphasis on soundsystem suitability.

Arriving as the first release of the new sublabel series FIGURE JAMS, this split EP by Fabrizio Lapiana and Amotik serves not only as a crafty cut in its own right but also showcases a particular type of package, which we will be facilitating from now on.

The A-side is taken up by a pair of Lapiana‘s irresistably dense grooves that unmistakebly tread in the footsteps of his homeland‘s highly emotional techno, unafraid of big melodies but also injecting just the right amount of twisted acid to set the floor ablaze.

This sense of grandeur and space is also reflected in the work of fast-rising producer Amotik. Painting with his very own colours as an equally epic scenery, its bleak and post-apocalyptic landscape dominated by broken industrial beats and hypnotically swirling synths.

Picture a skyline. Then, fog cascading down the wooded hills of San Francisco, towards the Pacific. And rising up from that land is a tower — the radio antenna of the Sutro Tower — that reaches upwards like a metal claw, as if to harness all of the power of the sky. That is the image Christina Chatfield’s Sutro conjures and is also its point of inspiration.

Christina Chatfield, based in SF, offers Mysteries an impressive, visionary full-length debut. Abound with polyphonic synth work and immersive tonal structures, these arrangements unfold into lush, cinematic soundscapes. Chatfield has long been a versatile producer with roots in techno, electro, ambient, shoegaze and more — and all of these influences come through in Sutro, creating an album with remarkable power and emotional depth. 

At times, tracks like “Nameless,” with its misty vocals layered over hypnotic synth, pay homage to the shoegaze greats. At other points, the album turns retro-futuristic, becoming a sonic rendering of the Sutro Tower itself. In “Pearls Scattered,” for example, an off-kilter synth melody lends eccentricity to an already moody atmosphere. Arguably the most immersive arrangements on the album are “Concatenate I” and its connected successor “Concatenate II,” as well as the richly textured, panoramic track “Drin.” As “Concatenate” derives its name from a linguistic programming concept meaning linking (things) together in a chain or series, it seems natural that the album extends “Concatenate” into two sequences. In both, synth arpeggiation guides the ear through maximalist landscapes accented by lush pads. “Drin” is melodic and sweeping, bringing to mind the ruins of the Sutro Baths, bathed in the glow of afternoon light. “Drin” especially is a microcosmic example of what happens in so many of the tracks on this album: they start quiet and evolve, until it’s clear the silence is teeming with life. The album closes with its title track, which leans into Chatfield’s techno sensibilities; its elegance leaves the ear satisfied. Altogether, the album nourishes and satisfies, for what Chatfield has composed is thoughtfully conceptualized and wholly complete.
