The modern era of music has given way to enigmas and artists of all styles and forms who shatter our expectations of what it means to be an artist. Joshua Benard epitomizes the essence of stepping beyond expectations. Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Joshua Benard is making music that is thoughtful, conscious, and driven by a desire to motivate, inspire, and challenge his listeners. “I want to inspire people to think critically about themselves and the world around them.”
Joshua Benard grew up in a music-centric home inspired by family and his ancestral roots. Benard is deeply moved by the history and legacy of his ancestors, understanding that their blood runs through him and that their struggles and triumphs establish the foundation for his identity. He accredits the pivotal influences in his life and music to Chicago House and Juke Music, the “Oldies,” Disco, and artists like, Lupe Fiasco, Crucial Conflict, and Jay Z.
He dropped his debut project “Progression” back in 2011 as J-ILLA. He then went on to drop his sophomore project entitled “Precision” in 2019 as ILLA. Those who have been a fan since the beginning may remember his pseudonyms J-Boss or J-Swag. Throughout this evolution, Joshua Benard has opened up for artists such as Maino and Do or Die and was part of a “mini-tour” of the Midwest.
Benard will drop his brand new project named “The EP Vol. 1” in December 2020.
