“The terms ‘New World’ and ‘Old World’ feel completely outdated today,” says Mühlhoff. “This track is my ironic commentary on that.” In contrast to his debut, which oscillated between chillwave and downbeat, Hyper New World Symphony surprises with unexpected instrumentation: it begins with an Arabic guitar before electronic beats kick in. Later, the piece quotes the James Bond theme, a deconstructed guitar solo from Stairway to Heaven, French house grooves, and field recordings—chirping birds, the crackle of a film projector, and a crowing rooster as a wake-up call.

“The piece is a parody of much of what’s going on in the world right now,” Mühlhoff explains. “Loud, flashy, full of stimuli. I probably won’t make another track in this style—but I wanted to play once with the idea of the New and Old World. Without questioning Dvořák’s work—it is and remains a brilliant symphony. But we simply live in a different time today.”

The finest Italo-disco record ever made.

"Take a Chance" is an untouchable example of Italo-disco's sweet-spot—the qualities it possessed over it's American forefather. "Take a Chance" is club-ready, and not in the ostentatious sense that the best of Studio 54's floorfillers were. It is lithe and acidic, bearing as much of a relation to the squelching galactic visions of early techno that would soon be built in Detroit as it does the disco that came first. In its own perhaps primitive way, it bangs, and throbs, it demands to be moved to. In terms of easing the track into a DJ set, "Take a Chance" is structurally perfect, sitting around 120 BPM, ready to be weaponized by everyone across place and time from the hands of Nicky Siano all the way through to Teki Latex.

For whatever reason, in the case of this one track, shooting for the past meant reaching that place dance music so rarely does. The alchemy of something bizarre, ballistic and eternal. Even now, Mr Flagio sounds like the future.

This is a very, very rare pressing which is slightly different from, but way better then his Megamix of this track. I'm still looking for this particular original source material to make a proper quality re-edit. For now, I upped it a bit and extended only the intro a bit, making it a bit more dj-friendly. Expect an re-edit of this track in one of my upcoming mixes.

Biography:

Ilya Santana is a name that echoes through the shimmering corridors of electronic music, particularly in the realms of space disco and cosmic funk. Born and raised in the Canary Islands, a place where the Atlantic meets the dust of Africa, Santana found himself drawn to the edges of sound early on—edges where melody could float, and rhythm didn’t have to march. He came up through the analog warmth of the ‘70s and the cold seduction of the ‘80s, and somehow fused both into his own kind of future nostalgia.

His career took root in the early 2000s, not through grand gestures but through consistency—a steady stream of releases that wound their way through labels like Balearic stalwarts Eskimo Recordings and Nang. Each track, a kind of ode to neon dreams and late-night drives, became a testament to Santana’s gift for atmosphere: his music doesn’t just play, it inhabits. There’s a cinematic quality to his work, like he’s scoring the movie of a life that’s never quite real but always feels familiar.

Ilya’s sound is less about chart-topping bravado and more about evocation. It lingers. It hums beneath the surface of memory. Through remix work, original compositions, and DJ sets that feel like journeys, Santana has shaped a career that’s both low-key and influential—an underground luminary lighting the way for those who understand that some of the best music doesn’t demand attention, it earns it.
