“What if we’ve been getting this wrong?”

Col Gordon is a farmer’s son from the Scottish Highlands. After a decade away, he’s finally returned to the place that he loves: his family farm. Now, he’s eager to start realising his vision for an agroecological future: a future in which rural areas are alive with culture, many more people work on the land, farms operate in sympathy with nature, and nutritious food is available to everyone in society.

But now that he’s back, Col’s starting to wonder whether this vision can be achieved within the existing family farm model. Increasingly, it seems the odds are stacked against farms like his. Many are struggling to survive, let alone to employ people and deliver good food affordably to local communities. As older farmers retire without succession plans, and their land is amalgamated into large industrial operations, the future of the small family farm looks pretty bleak.

As he wrangles with all of this, Col stumbles across something that throws his vision – and his very understanding of farming – into doubt. What does it mean to say that “The family farm is a colonial concept”? And might this jarring idea be the key to understanding the problem – as well as its potential solutions?

Covering all poles between New Beat, electro, Manc punk and darkroom EBM sleaze in the first half, and fully twysting out between ghetto tech, breakbeat hardcore, footwork, and gnashing acid tekkers on the rushing 2nd part - including a killer haul of juke-juiced flips of classic ‘80s synth-pop.

Sometimes there are moments and sets in London clubland where the stars align, certain artists are in the building and the energy is LOOSE.

Skee Mask at the HVYWGHT 4th Birthday back in February was one of those moments.

Following on from a South London Digital Mystikz homecoming at peak time to a fever pitch Brixton Electric. Playing a dubstep party for the first time, alongside legends of the scene - Skee Mask proceeded to play one of the hardest sets we’ve ever seen, effortlessly mixing classic grime into dubstep into techno into breaks and beyond.

A flurry of MC’s were in the wings, none of whom were booked to host the set but had no choice but to jump on. The energy was infectious - Flowdan B2B Trim B2B Chunky B2B SP:MC over Skee Mask on the Sinai Soundsystem. We can guarantee you will never get this combination of artists on a set EVER again.

Very few musical acts achieve the levels of unanimous acclaim of Autechre. The English duo of Rob Brown and Sean Booth are not an act you simply like; they are an act you love, fawn over and dream about. They’ve got themselves here over the course of the last 28 years, and have done so by amassing a discography that’s about as perfect, influential and accomplished as could ever be possible. A key Warp label act from day one, they have released tens of albums, well over a ten EPs and have featured on a dizzying amount of essential compilations, mixes and remixes in that time. Without their contribution to the IDM canon, its fair to say the modern musical landscape would look very different. 

Rhythmic but experimental, absorbing yet abstract, cerebral and psychedelic, their ever evolving output is up there with the likes of fellow luminaries Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin as some of the most important in all of electronic music. As well as being fine craftsmen in the studio, Autechre are also revered live performers who really manage to conjure up captivating and otherworldly soundtracks that marry heavy bass with ethereal melody. The pair themselves do not care for genre, but suffice it to say that they have mastered everything from hardcore to ambient to glitch and plenty of indescribables in between. 

When the pair recently laid down an impressive set at Dekmantel Festival, we asked if they might be up for a doing an early inspiration mix, whereby they put together a collection of the sort of electro and hip hop tracks that turned them on as youths. At first they hesitated, pointing out that "we don't do strictly retro stuff, it's too corny.” But alas, a few days later, a huge file landed in our inbox… That file is a 4 hour and 18 minute mix that basically encapsulates not just Autechre’s own influences, but also acts as a fine anthology of the greatest electro sounds of all time. Every sub genre imaginable gets touched upon along the way, with nods to forefathers like Kraftwerk, killer cuts from Man Parrish, classics from Newcleus and retro gold from the likes of The Beat Club. It is a thrilling ride and a truly rare treat that reminds us just why we love Autechre, as well as shining a light on a vast genre that often pays second fiddle to house and techno.

Remastered for 2018! Almost two decades on we've given this much-loved classic a much-needed sonic facelift. 

Done in one day, two flatmates locked in our home studio in Garnethill. The rules - anything can go into the mix, nothing can come out. You can sample or play anything in the house. Main sources included the cutting room floor, a collection of obscure charity shop vinyl and VHS, 5 channels of daytime tv, the dog, anyone who happened to pop by and a pocket shortwave radio - oh and some instruments. An Atari ST, Akai S2000 sampler, Novation BassStation, Roland SH-101, a glam rock guitar, a touch-tone telephone, the trusty TEAC record deck and a Philips DCC recorder with incredibly effective tie-clip mic.

With our heads full of ColdCut, the KLF, FSOL and a whole era of nonsense we had possibly the most productive day of our young lives creating the 40 minute melting pot that is Vinyl Chaos. A symphony of beats & breaks with sample highlights including Battle of the Planets, Hong Kong TV taped off a dictaphone, Delia Smith, Zed the Dog, Romantic Gypsy Violins, Monkey (Magic), Top of the Pops, Strathclyde Police, The Jungle Book, Trisha, The Delgados. 

Sit back, turn it up - and play it louder. A snapshot of our Glasgow tenement living-room in 1999.
