SOUND ECHOES, LISTENING SPACES
La Rada – 30.03.24 – 27.04.24

(Tumulte) is a sound and visual installation by Juliette Henrioud that aims to question its environment and stimulate introspection. By combining these two mediums, the intention is to illustrate the search for inner peace amidst turmoil. The visuals and sound piece come together to offer a personal and intimate interpretation of the emotions felt during a period of obstacles. The
chosen title aims to express the delicate balance as well as the strength of this phase of reconstruction, an in-between stage where all possibilities exist, and anxieties are present. With inner echoes and murmurs, (Tumulte) invites you to examine your shifting thoughts and experiences
in order to find yourself.

The sound piece features field recordings, melodic layers, and a text from the diary of the artist David Wojnarowicz titled «seeing myself seeing myself sitting by an open window.» The aim of the piece is to depict the inner struggle in the pursuit of personal peace. The various textures and words used in the composition attempt to illustrate this inner turmoil.

The paintings aim to portray this never-ending and challenging movement of
thoughts and inner turmoil.

The carpet provides an opportunity for the audience to sit and listen to the sound piece.

“Dying Lumen (Flickering Hope)”
A slow descent into dimness—where light still exists, but only as memory.
The piece unfolds like a shadow stretching across time, carried by deep, sustained tones and barely-there harmonics.
There is no climax. Only the gentle unraveling of something once certain.
What remains is a feeling: not absence, but the fading trace of presence. A mournful hush, suspended in sound.

This was my contribution for Disquiet Junto Project 0715: Err Apparent. The Assignment: Make a mistake on purpose. Build something from it.

This is a loose interpretation of the prompt since I used a recent recording that already had flaws rather than making a mistake on purpose. Last week, we took our dog Hanako to the beach. She loves to run around going after the bull kelp that washes up on the shore and tear them apart. Sometimes, she’ll collect them onto a big pile. I figured it would be cool to do some field recordings during our doggie beach day. As I was setting up, I realized that I had taken the spent batteries out of the Zoom F3 recorder and never replaced them. I did have a back up recorder, a Sony A10, but didn’t bring the windjammer for it. The weather was breezy but recorded several minutes of ocean sounds anyway. When I listened to the recordings that night, the audio was mostly wind noise. I thought I could salvage some of the beach ambience for this project.
 
I used a high pass filter in Ableton Live along, with additional effects, to cleanup and manipulate the recording so at least some of the ocean sounds came through. From there, added additional tracks using built-in instruments and Slate+Ash Ruins. This turned out to have a much more chill vibe than I originally imagined.

0uth returns to immersive love after a year — this time in a completely new, almost weightless form.

The album The Sun also Rising is an ambient drone journey created in 2024, during long train rides. The sound unfolds through slow motion — through fading landscapes outside the window, through quiet walks between carriages, through the muffled life behind each compartment door. Each melody feels like a passing reflection, a breath between stations. Music for those who wait for their destination — and for those who have long forgotten where they’re going.

Immersive love is a nostalgic tribute to the times of 2000s and the Netlabel scene. Back then independent musicians and music producers, used the internet to distribute their music without the intention of making a profit. They allowed other artists to use their music for free, which allowed them to express themselves without the constraints of the music industry. This passion for music-making spread to other musicians and listeners, leading to the formation of a network of labels and blogs that formed communities of individuals who created, shared, reviewed, and published the music of independent artists. However, the rise of social media and streaming platforms with algorithmic models led to a decrease in creative freedom and marked the end of this period.
