Imad Essentials: Soul

At first listen, I used to think Lovers Rock was simply Jamaican reggae, which it actually isn't. The story of Lovers Rock actually goes a little like this:

In the 1950s, about half a million people moved from the Caribbean to the UK & brought with them a variety of music, for example reggae, calypso & soca. Lovers Rock grew from those roots as music of the first generation born and raised in the UK, fusing reggae basslines with the sweet soul sound from the US. Despite gaining popularity in the 70s, there were many other genres emerging at the same time, and Lovers Rock never became quite as mainstream as others had.

Project Sunrise Mix Vol. 2

For the first edition of my little Imad Invites series, I invited the one and only @Habibigrooves 

Not only a music aficionado and the @berlinhousemusic bossman, but he’s also hands down one of the most genuine people I’ve gotten to know. We met about 3 years ago when we both helped out at a @berlinbasscollective night at Prince Charles and bonded over the question “where are you from?”.

After that we bumped into each other more and more often, and about a year later I invited him to play b2b with me at a party at Loftus Hall aka Christa Kupfer which was a blast. 

Funny little side story, I once submitted a mix (which I thought was amazing) to his Berlin House Music label when I was starting out, and Yousif, being the honest guy he is, said it was good but not great, and didn’t publish it. Learning that the best I could do wasn’t as good as I thought provided me with a chance to reflect and gave me an even stronger desire to improve.

Needless to say, he’s given me a heap of great advice and insights over the years, for which I’m eternally grateful.
