I didn't get the musical references but enjoyed the changes and styles. I'm impressed that you used 150 instances of Lith and it shows in your very detailed and broad sound design. Good work!

Disquiet Junto Project 0575: On Ice
The Assignment: Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something with it.

I always wanted to do the ice project, but year for year I missed it because of … reasons. Last year I even build a diy hydrophone (see here https://www.instagram.com/p/CXoJtm5tR_w/ ) for this project (and missed it again). Now I tried to melt the ice with the frozen contact mic inside, and record it 'from inside'.

I made some videos: In the “red part” of the video I hoped to create (and record) a crack in the ice, in the “ice inside a glass” part you may even see the bubbles of noises you will hear in my track (not in the video, it's meta only): https://www.instagram.com/p/CnFbiOiNIV3/

The results were … unspectacular. By whatsoever reason the ice didn't click or make interesting noises and because I had to amplify the signal from the contact mic of the hydrophone, there was a lot of noise and hum in the Zoom H5 recording. 

I used a 1 minute sample from the recordings, reduced the noises and the hum and tried to isolate the sound of the slowly melting ice, which was a sound between cooking water, eating popcorn, burning wood. It didn't work well, because the noise frequencies were mostly on the same range. But you can hear them in the background noise floor, which I doubled time-displaced for having stereo. I added some Supermassive FX, because it worked.

I could have lived with that alone, but decided to add some bass. Fortunately there was the f…ing 50Hz AC humming in the recording, which I had filtered for the melting ice noise tracks – and which I amplified for the bass track. Maybe not the most interesting bass lick, but I liked it for its endurance. 

I used another, unfiltered version of the sample to add rhythmic elements with the help of Audiomoderns Stepfilter and Gatelab plugins, which are always nice for something like that, and here I used two instances with different speeds (1/4, 1/8T) for creating some unexpectedness.

I think I clearly failed recording "ice in a glass". Next try next new years eve … but I really like the resulting track, because all is made with a single noisy humming 1 minute recording sample. If someone wants to add some solo or remix it – be my guest ;-)

P.oceanica is a slow-growing species of Posidonia, a global seagrass that provides food and shelter to marine organisms, protect coasts against erosion, and purifies natural water resources. P.oceanica covers the entire coastline of the Mediterranean Sea with its network of roots and rhizomes. One colony discovered off the coast of Ibiza is believed to be nearly two-hundred thousand years old, which would make it the oldest living plant in the world.

Marta Solé, a research scientist in environmental engineering at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona Tech (UPC), has spent her career studying the impact of noise pollution on marine biology. Solé’s previous research demonstrated that cephalopods hear sound through small sensory organs, which become damaged when noise exceeds a certain volume and frequency. P.oceanica have exhibited similarly adverse effects to noise, compromising the plants’ ability to connect to root systems and gather nutrients from the ocean.

Suss Müsik considered the metaphorical duality of sound waves and ocean currents as a framework for this Junto project. Three “waves” of synthetic material were treated with various distortion effects and allowed to pass over each other. A cyclical pattern simulates the gently modulating seagrass that lies beneath the surf, insulating its tender blades from the harsher noise just above the crashing waves.

The piece is titled P.oceanica and was recorded live to Tascam 8-track. Those who wish to learn more about Solé’s work are encouraged to read The Sounds of Life by Karen Bakker.

Escapism Freestyle (cover)

Hi, lately I’ve been working a lot (for a professional assignment) on orchestral soundscapes, so my previous Soundcloud shares were done using sample libraries, a friend’s cello performance and my own upright basses (using my bow)

This one, recorded yesterday and edited and finished today (Friday the 27th Oct 2023 is just me and my multitracked bowed bass , to achieve a noisy, creepy tone I didn’t use any rosin on the bow, so i could get some nasty tones bowing very hard and all around the strings. It was fun, just improvising one track on top of the previous and playing around some cathedral convolution reverbs, a Lexicon Hall at 18 seconds and one instance of the great Valhalla Supermassive (always useful for this stuff, with the right settings it transforms a noisy harmonic into a gorgeous sustained pad )

This one’s dedicated to William Burroughs and is called Rotten Ectoplasm.

Process notes

First day - 
- Typed one paragraph from the Black Panther newspaper of 4 Nov 1972 into Google Translate. I went with 51 years ago, instead of 50.
- Sent the German output into a text-to-speech engine, PlayHT
- Paulstretch in Audacity & exported
- Dragged into Live and duplicated two more times
- Set warp markers to produce variations & panned two tracks L & R
- L & R tracks each treated to two instances of Arturia Tape Melo-Fi to get some crud distortion
- Center track treated to some widening in Live

Second day - 
- Recorded a china cymbal. This was run into Ableton Live’s Spectral Resonator and other effects.
- Recorded a short series of walking bass notes using a Turser JTB-402. This was run through a modified Buffer Shuffler, iZotope’s Neutron and other effects.
- I duplicated this track and converted the second copy to MIDI for use in sidechaining.
- I froze/flattened the cymbal, speech and bass audio tracks
- I altered some of the things I did the day before with the speech tracks.
- Recorded a nylon-string guitar that was missing the low E and the D string. I retuned the second highest string, recorded something related to the bass track and enhanced this with Live’s grain delay.
- I split the bass audio track into two for hi/lo processing with some simple shelving EQ.
