LOUIE VEGA BREAKS DOWN HIS GRAMMY NOMINATED REMIX OF JASPER STREET CO. / PRAYING FOR YOU

 I've been a huge fan of Jasper Street Co. and its producers Teddy Douglas and DJ Spen and the whole Baltimore family for over 25 years. Baltimore always had the Gospel sound in the pocket when it came to dance music. They've been doing it for years, and that Gospel influence inspired me to create some of my own productions and remixes with artists like Bebe Winans, The Winans Brothers, The Clarke Sisters, & Kenny Bobien to name a few. And who would imagine we’d be here? A Grammy Nomination in the Best Remixed Category for the Louie Vega Remix of "Praying For You" by Jasper Street Co. produced by Baltimore finest.  

Here's how it all happened. Michael Weiss from Nervous Records signed an album deal for Jasper Street Co., and he reached out and asked me to remix one of the album cuts. I listened to every track, but for some reason the song "Praying For You" stood out. I think the syncopated beat, and the driving backgrounds singing "On My Knees" in the vamp caught my ear. Besides it being a truly inspirational song, it had all the elements I would need to start the remix. 

What also helped solidify my choice to remix this track was when I went to a birthday party for Tony Humphries in New Jersey at the Cricket Club with guest DJ Teddy Douglas, Teddy played the track while I was dancing on the floor and hearing it in their environment…I said this is the one to remix! 

I went into my studio Daddy's Workshop with the stems and called on my keyboardist / collaborator Axel Tosca after I had finished up the rhythm track.  We revoiced the chords and vocal song elements giving it a new feel. I enhanced the syncopated loop that was there with more kicks, hats, claps, and it just created a driving beat that was a dj's tool if any and would get anyone movin' on a dancefloor.  

Once Axel and I finished up the music we called in Gene Perez (Bass Player of Elements Of Life) and he laced the groove and then the pocket was complete. I moved around vocals to create a vamp with adlibs giving you the force of testifying with a musical change that elevated you to an even loftier place. When I finished the overdub sessions (it took two sessions to complete) I thought I could build it even more with additional adlibs from the group. This required some extra coordination given everyone’s various schedules. 

I conferred with Michael Weiss and we decided to make a road trip out of it. A bunch of my New York nightlife fam came along, and we had a 4 car caravan rolling down I95 on a Sunday morning journey to Baltimore.  The plan was to do the recording at one of Spen and Teddy's studio stomping grounds, and then that night  throw a party afterwards at a small venue with fans to test out a rough mix of the session. 

The trip was a complete success! Having Vonita, Fruity, and Richard from Jasper Street Co. sing new backgrounds, along with a new set of adlibs by Vonita brought the song to that next level. It was the icing on the cake! And the party that night was incredible. The energy was through the roof when I played a rough mix of the song. 

That week I went back to my studio Daddy's Workshop and arranged what we recorded and my engineer Yas Inoue and I finished up the remix. The following Wednesday I went to play at my residency in New York City, Expansions NYC and before the night started with our staff we listened to the final mix and everyone went crazy dancing and feeling the track. We knew right there it was an instant smash! 
This track truly comes from the underground grass roots of dance music, and it’s a true honor to see that it is nominated for a Grammy in the Best Remix Category !!

Spin City: 'Best Radio Show'  - Only Good Vibes Music Awards 2021

Hailing from Scotland, Goz has been DJ’ing for over 25 years and in that time has embraced a number of genres from house, hip hop and soul to disco and funk. In the early 1990s he was introduced to the art of mixing vinyl records and from that point forwards, Goz immersed himself in the art of beat matching and building sets - crafting his unique style throughout the 1990s where he would play local parties and get-togethers and, of course  - the all-important pre and post-night out shenanigans.  

After taking a break from DJ’ing in the early 2000s, Goz picked up the reins once again in 2014 and got back to doing what he loves most. Goz has always had an exceptionally diverse taste in music, although he naturally gravitated towards disco, soul, funk and hip-hop genres. 

Goz’s passion for music shines through in his sets, which are carefully curated and crafted to take you on a journey that always leaves you craving more. As one of the most renowned specialists in slow-mo and laid back grooves, when Goz decides to drop down the gears he creates a ‘soundscape’ experience few DJs on the scene can achieve. Similarly, when the disco juices are flowing, and the BPM is cranked up it’s a roller coaster ride and swirling haze of funky basslines, heavenly string arrangements, Afro beats and soulful smokiness. 

As host / show runner of the hugely successful Spin City which airs on New York’s number one House Music Station, www.myhouseradio.fm for a number of years now, Goz has built an extensive and strong follower base who regularly tune in to the two hour show which airs every Sunday at 7pm GMT (2pm NYC). The format of Spin City is a certified winner - with Goz normally presenting the first hour of the show followed by a special guest mix each week. On occasion, Goz will take the whole two hours to treat listeners to prime selections of new, old and classic tracks.  Some of the biggest names on the disco and nu-disco scene have appeared on the show, which has also secured talents such as John Le Visiteur, IMFROMULL, DJ Wahine and Queen & Disco for bi-monthly and quarterly residency spots. Goz also has a keen eye for up-and-coming DJs and producers - spotting undiscovered talent early and giving them a platform to showcase their skills.

During the summer of 2019, Goz teamed up with a group of like-minded DJs and producers to form a new promotion - Black Light Disco. The first Black Light Disco event in June 2019 was an enormous success and has gone on to land its own radio show which also airs on MyHouse Radio FM every Monday from 7pm - 9pm GMT (2pm - 4pm NYC). Since the show started in January 2020, its reputation has grown considerably and BLD now attracts some of the biggest names on the disco and nu-disco scene for guest spots. In May 2020, Black Light Disco formed a partnership with the excellent Samosa Records and Daje Funk Records to present a monthly residency on the MyHouse Radio platform, with label head honchos Les Inferno and De Gama taking over the show for the whole two hours. Airing on the second Monday of each month, The Samosa Funk show is already taking the disco world by storm -the partnership with BLD really taking things to the next level for the promotion. Going forward, Black Light Disco has a number of live events planned, so watch this space for the most up-to-date news on where one of Black Light Disco’s now famous nights will drop next!
