Some 20 years ago, at the turn of the millennium, Sydney was world-famous for its 24-hour bars and epic dance parties. Sydney was the most lively city in the world where people queued 24/7 to get into clubs - before Nanny State laws closed 176 venues and destroyed its nightlife forever.

Tunnel Nightclub, open in the late '80s by Ibrahim, was accessible from a laneway and championed a 'female majority' policy - a breath of fresh air for women in the pre #MeToo era.

It was rebranded EP1 in the late nineties and early noughties, then Dragonfly from 2004-2010, before becoming Tunnel again and then closing for good as the owners threw up their hands in frustration. This mix is the second part of my tribute to EP1, arguably my favourite Sunday night during its era.

Before I begin, I just want to put a disclaimer out there that this 'NRG Session' is not mixed by me but mixed by DJ Paul Astro.

Not only is Paul a great guy, but he was renowned for being one of Sydney’s premier DJs in the 90s and early 2000s. This mix, from around 2000 typifies why people want to see him back, doing what he does best! I've stumbled across it and it is too good not to share. Listen to the maestro go to work. Enjoy!

Our nights often started on Oxford Street. Rock up to the Temple or Rogues in time to catch some drinks with friends and get the night started. Stay until the early hours of the morning and hike over to Black Market, finding yourself checking your pockets for enough spare change to by a pair of $10 sunglasses for the trek over. Alternatively, you might find yourself hunting a kebab down on Oxford Street, hooking left towards the glow of the Coke sign for a slow persistent crawl towards the heart of Potts Point. How good was life in the 90s and early 2000s. Session 034 celebrates good times, in arguably the best era in Sydney’s nightlife.
