For nearly a decade, Tycho has been known as the musical alias of Scott Hansen, but with the release of Awake – his second LP for Ghostly International – the solo project has evolved into a three-piece band. Relating closer to post-rock than ambient soundscapes, the record is situated in the present, sounding more like Hansen than drawing from his influences. “This is, in many ways, the first true Tycho record.”

Following 2011’s Dive LP, the San Francisco-based designer toured extensively, and with a full band on stage, his sound coalesced into a percussive, organic whole. Zac Brown (guitars, bass) rejoined Scott on the road for this tour, but it was the particular addition of Rory O’Connor’s live drumming that ultimately sent Hansen back to the studio with a more precise vision. “After the tour, I decided that I wanted to capture the more energetic, driven sound of the live show on the next album,” Hansen recalls. Bringing musicians into Tycho’s creative process was a step towards expanding his own songwriting and advancing the project beyond its current sound.

In a cabin near Tahoe last winter, Zac and Scott began fleshing out the structure of the new record, but it wasn’t until they set up shop in the hills of Santa Cruz with Rory that it all fell into place. “It crystallized the vision of how the drums would come to the forefront on this record,” says Hansen. The sound was much more stripped-down and concise with more organic instruments in the fold. Songs like “Montana” and “Awake” are a departure from Tycho’s previous material – unique to the group effort poured into the songs on the new record – while “See” and “Dye” echo ideas from previous works, bridging a middle ground between the old and new. Working with Count Eldridge, who also engineered Dive, the team could fixate on the pulses that Tycho might previously layer under synthesizers and exhume them with distinct bass and guitar patterns.

Also known for his design work as ISO50, Hansen’s visual and sonic efforts have dovetailed throughout the course of his career. “This is the first time in my life I've dropped everything to focus on one artistic pursuit,” notes Hansen. Previous Tycho releases came to fruition when an amalgam of songs were nearing completion, but Awake is where music becomes the focus and true expression becomes the result.

" Dedicated to & inspired by the people in my life. Each track is named after someone who I feel has made a huge impact on my life & the way I see the world. I got sounds that reminded me of them (favorite songs,movie scenes,etc.) and made tracks from those samples after I would spend time with them..talk to them..or even just think of them. I tried to put whatever emotion I had from those moments into song form. During the time I was making this project I had a lot of things going on with my life..working on these songs helped me get my mind off everything. It was great because I didn't have to leave my own room to go to another place,all I had to do was close my eyes and listen. A word from the author:

The whole idea about writing something like the Zodiac began many years ago, when I realized that very seldom composers were taking an innovative and imaginative approach to the wonderful and majestic medium such as piano and orchestra. Usually, when listening to a piano concerto, you are being given three large chunks of music - a fast movement, a slow movement...and  an even faster one. I was always wondering how come we have pieces in the classical solo piano repertoire, like the Pictures at an Exhibition, or Schumann's Carnival,  or Tchaikovsky's Seasons, for that matter, and when it comes to a piano plus orchestra, we still limit ourselves to the rendering of a standard Sonata cycle. 

This is how I knew that I wanted my "piano concerto" to be a collection of miniatures, rather than a typical three movement form. 

Looking for a theme that would unite this pieces together, I even went in the direction of Nordic folklore, planning to take a fairytale and turn it into music, with individual movements conveying different parts of the story.

But I knew I also needed something genuinely universal, in order to really capture the audience...I mean, why would anyone bother to listen to a new piano concerto by Aleksandar Simic, if he can have Rach 3, Tchaikovsky's B-Flat or Prokofiev's Second?! So I decided to turn to Universe itself. 

The idea of the Zodiac is as old as our civilization. Our deep, unconscious and instinctive connection with the stars  was there when first men roamed the Earth, thousands and thousands of years before the first astrologers began to unravel their secrets.  As we evolved, so evolved our need to understand ourselves, come to turn with the good and the bad sides of our characters and possibly find some absolution in the fact that our destinies have been determined from the very first day we were born - and guided by the stars. 

I began to read and prepare for the actual composition, going through every piece on astrological psychology  I could get my hands on - from Jung and Freud, to Bruno and Louise Huber, and after some time I was confident enough to draw up a plan, or should I say a natal chart for the Zodiac. I decided to begin the cycle with the sign of Aries, and end it with the Aquarius, celebrating the new  chance that we are given with the beginning of a new era. My initial plan was to bring a choir to the last movement, and I even wrote the lyrics, imagining the huge vocal ensemble of cosmical elders, delivering a message to the Human race: "Bring Peace and Hope; Bring Love and Joy; As we pass the threshold to the newborn skies - Fulfill the ancient promise that was given to the stars".  This time the Zodiac appears before you without the choral ending, but I do hope the message is felt in the music itself.  

I also hope you will find a piece of yourself in the music, and not necessarily in your own sign. Because we are all a part of a single bigger picture.
