Happy New Year everyone and welcome back to another Transmission broadcasting from the HER 他 Transmission Mix Series. We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone who made 2021 special and has continued to support HER throughout everything that has been happening since we threw our first event in Taipei back in late 2019. 

Before officially welcoming 2022 into our lives, we want to deliver a special edition New Years Eve HER Transmission, and for this we have invited Sam Eckhardt.  

Sam is a writer and archivist based in Naarm [Melbourne]. She is part owner and operator of the record store Lulu's; a shop that focuses on music and writing from the Australian underground and like-minded contemporary international movements. Her mix for HER incorporates works taken from, amongst more conventional sources, privately produced cassettes, CD-Rs, and her own extensive archive of live recordings.

In addition to her work at Lulu's, she is currently working on an English language history of the Japanese experimental rock band Hikashu.

The revisit to 'Serendipia' saw Oath approach some top-notch producers, who provided a bountiful array of alternative styles and takes on the hazy rhythms and gorgeous melodic features of Beltran's original tracks. In doing so, the artists involved managed to capture the core essence of the original LP, and that is of the broad diversity of feel which Beltran provided, with tracks swinging from genre and style with ease and intuition. What is perhaps handled the best is the balance between the original cuts and the musical personality of the music makers involved, and that makes for a truly feel good experience. Danilo Plessow's remix of 'Sa Coma Blue' slides into view as the record's opener. Plessow turbo charges the core melodic drivers of the original, moving the atmosphere into a club environment with high line drumming patterns, driving synth sequences and a firm hand on controlling the shifts in energy and mood.

Building from a reputation of arresting live performances and critically acclaimed releases Puce Mary breaks new ground with The Drought, evolving from the tropes of industrial and power electronics to forge a complex story of adapting to new realities. Remnants of noise still exist, sustaining the penetrative viscerality offered on previous records, however The Drought demonstrates an intention to expand on the vocabulary of confrontational music and into a grander narrative defined by technical and emotional growth.

Bringing together introspective examination with literary frameworks by writers such as Charles Baudelaire and Jean Genet, Puce Mary’s compositions manifest an ongoing power struggle within the self towards preservation. The traumatised body serves as a dry landscape of which obscured memories and escape mechanisms fold reality into fiction, making sense of desire, loss and control. The Drought presents both danger and opportunity; through rebuilding a creative practice centred on first person narrative and a deliberate collage of field recordings and sound sources Puce Mary injects an acute urgency across the album seeking resilience.

“To Possess Is To Be In Control” makes use of lyrical repetition as an ambiguity of two selves, or a divided self, attempting to consume one another, while “Red Desert,” named after Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1964 film, portrays the individual subsumed by surrounding environmental forces. The seven-minute epic “The Size of Our Desires” acts as the emotional tipping point of the record; amongst the ominous drone and dense feedback flutters almost-beatific melodies, while the lyrics reveal a romantic call to be swept up in the midst of an increasingly uninhabitable world.

Rather than escape, The Drought dramatises a metamorphosis in which vulnerability is confronted through regeneration. Noise and aggression no longer act as an affront to react against but part of a ‘corporeal architecture’ where space, harmony and lyricism surface from the harsh tropes of industrial music. The Drought chronologises a transformation through a psychological famine, new ways of coping akin to plant survival in a desert – to live without drying out.

This series for Resonance Extra forms part of a wider project, 'Each Morning of the World', which invites sound artists, composers and recordists globally to share their own specific point of listening, either through a raw field recording or original composition.

In this episode, 'Moganshan Lu Pile Driver' Terence Lloren. 

"My favourite recording from my time in Shanghai, and one that's representative of my experience of the city during the past decade. It was recorded at M50, an old factory complex that had been converted into artists' studios and gallery. 

I was showing my friend around that day and there was this tremendous sound. Each thump rattled the glass in the old windows and shook the ground. We explored a little and found a high vantage point to witness the reinforcement of the bank along Suzhou Creek, with a new row of piles not 30 meters from where we stood. 

We stood there mesmerized with the violent rhythm. Notice the echolocation-like effect of the hits bouncing from the glass buildings across the river. Creating space with a non-visual medium."

In this episode, 'Bayankhongorijn Khukh Nuur' by Patrick Franke. 

"In 2013 I took part in an expedition to Central Mongolia. I was focussing on sound recordings to clarify the taxonomic status of some species based on bioacoustics or even to make first ever recordings."

Amongst other places we went to an alpine area surrounding the lake Bayankhongorijn Khukh Nuur. As days during expeditions are usually very packed, time for recordings of the general soundscape or even enjoying that just by listening is very limited. Thus, this excerpt of an one hour recording is a rather rare exception.

My aim was to document the soundscape of this particular spot after capturing vocalisations of most of it's inhabitants discretely. Furthermore this recording of a sparsely populated habitat should scrutinise Bernie Krauses 'acoustic niche' theory which is mostly based on data from densely populated habitats."

East Asia PhoNographic Mornings #19 - Patrick Franke 'Bayankhongorijn Khukh Nuur' - Sunday 17th May 2020

With a background in fine art (UdK, Berlin/ California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles) INA VIOLA has been making music for the past eight years. She has collaborated on tracks with various artists: NHOAH (Berlin), Lulu Schmidt (Vienna/ Berlin) and DJ and sound artist Mieko Suzuki (Tokyo/ Berlin). Her longstanding participation in the TANGOWERK project and her ongoing collaboration with R.O.T. Artistkollektiv (Berlin) has seen her tour to Buenos Aires, Miami, Athens, Vienna, London, and Berlin, amongst others.

Now her first EP, featuring her own compositions and song writing, is being released. Ina Viola employs her clear, warm voice and bluesy timbre to interpret everyday moments, supported by electronic sounds, subtle textures and complex, melodic bass lines. Central to her songs – and her art practice in which she creates immersive kinetic installations – is a sense of being able to ‘lose oneself’ within them.
