»sleepstep« is the first collaboration between raster-noton and dasha rush. the record‘s subtitle »sonar poems for my sleepless friends« describes its underlying concept – »sleepstep« is a trip through electronically alienated microcompositions and sound collages that, interwoven with text passages, aim at creating a dream-like atmosphere.

the stations of this journey are striving for oblivion of time, an immersion, a drifting in universal states – death, life, birth, grief, desire. the titles often appear to be raw sketches, fugitive, surreal short stories that rather want to break open than execute.

the musical arrangement, in this context, can be described as rather subtle and fragile. though electronically manipulated, no production technique is pushing itself to the fore. and though clichés are not dreaded, »sleepstep«, as a result, stays away from being cliché. the sonar poems for her sleepless friends are feminine, subtle and personal reports. a musical dream journey in the form of a classical concept record – an album that also stands in the tradition of ambient music.

dasha rush is already known as a techno dj and producer. here on »sleepstep«, she celebrates her alter ego. the cd version comes with a 32-pages booklet that also shows her photographic interest and includes the aforementioned poems written by her. furthermore there is 2 x 12" vinyl version.

as a central point of reference of grischa lichtenberger‘s »la demeure/il y a péril en la demeure« complex, raster-noton releases a limited edition of three 12“ vinyl EPs that are accompanied by a handmade, signed and individualized screen print.

the three EPs were set up as an experiment. each of the records is guided by a word that could be described as a phantasmagoria, a delusion of the 20th century – like a metaphor that is concerned not only with its immediate meaning, but with an implication more emotional, more irrational, telling something about the mindset of the not so distant past.

these keywords already existed before the production on the tracks began and thus played the role of an indirect orientation or playground for association. nevertheless, the EPs are not conceptualized, but rather a collection of habits and strategies in relation to the titles.

common to all EPs of the triptych is the question of a connection between intimacy and the public sphere. aesthetically, the music presented on the EPs ranges from distressing and unaligned dancefloor-oriented tracks to tribal and politically charged drones to unsettling noise ballads. on »spielraum«, for example, hypnotizing music box melodies are combined with claustrophobic breakbeats. »allgegenwart«, on the other hand, presents mechanical rhythms and sawing pads, topped with high-pitched warning sounds. last but not least, the final EP »strahlung« features self-forgetful, gloomy and melancholy tracks backed by melodies that remind of a barrel organ turned upside down.

with »redsuperstructure«, robert lippok created a new foundation for his musical endeavors. now – 7 years later – this system properly comes to life on »applied autonomy«. the title of the new album is a clear indicator as to what the berlin-based producer has been up to during the last couple of years, both on a conceptual level as well as how he molds his ideas into tracks.

»applied autonomy« orchestrates a certain state of frantic standstill, which occurs once a structure is set. has this state been reached, the artist is free to focus on other equally important aspects, balancing the various shades, pushing ideas even further to really make them shine and blossom in their self-declared autonomy. the more light one lets in, the more layers become visible.

layers are key when it comes to understanding »applied autonomy«. big chunks of the material with which the album has been produced derive from sketches specifically made for a club performance.

rather than meticulously devising each and every detail, lippok focussed instead on recording as many fragments as possible in a short period of time, elements which he could later combine and layer on stage. based on this material and his experience experimenting with it in a live environment, the album slowly began to shape. an album culminating in a collaboration with klara lewis, with whom lippok spent 2 days at the EMS studios in stockholm, approaching the idea of autonomy from yet another angle. during the session, both musicians played and performed simultaneously, yet not explicitly together, lost in their own thoughts and ideas, only subconsciously taking in what the other one was coming up with. the result is »samtal«, 14 minutes of a constantly evolving state of poise, magically connecting all the dots lippok had already defined as »applied autonomy«.

the artwork for »applied autonomy« has been created by the berlin-based argentinian artist luca gutierrez. over the last couple of years, he has made a name for himself with his spectacular AV performances.

For the dance film essay „The Body as Archive“ Gregor Schwellenbach chose a simple yet radical approach: he created a kind of catalog of sounds, clearly structured, presented with sobriety and boldness. The sounds are not embedded in the familiar frame of rhythm-harmony-melody; rather, they are introduced smoothly, presented one after the other, sometimes going together, then standing alone. It is a sensual approach, at the same time executed strictly systematically. Or vice versa: Schwellenbach’s composition is strictly systematical, giving maximum space for sensuality and the unfolding of sounds. Schwellenbach strives to create a system that doesn’t become rigid, by treating the material gently and with sincerity. In composing „The Body as Archive“ he sets clear rules: everything is played by hand, he only uses instruments he plays himself: Keyboards (Rhodes, piano, synthesizer) and double bass. Almost all material is played in the same key, the chords can be used in any combination, everything fits to everything. The ten parts of „The Body as Archive“, mastered by Taylor Deupree, could be played all at the same time without sounding cacophonous. Everything is pure presence, a gently woven stream of elegance and attentiveness. The organization of sounds - usually an action of preparation, didactic and discipline - turns into poetry.

Grischa Lichtenberger’s music stands for broken rhythms, for high-density manipulations that emphasize the digital and fractal nature of its working process. A mindset that grew closer to contemporary jazz in recent years. Since free jazz, this genre also sought to overcome musical standards and looked for possibilities of an individual artistic expression. Within this context, the collaboration between Lichtenberger and jazz saxophonist Philipp Gropper as well as the resulting album are documents of this development. It also offers both musicians the opportunity to expand their familiar environment by breaking with expectations.
The foundation for »re: phgrp« were pieces from the album »Consequences« by Philipp Gropper’s band PHILM which Lichtenberger reinterpreted without giving up their original character. He rather looked for figures, subjects and reference points in the compositions to reflect and condense them. As »Consequences« was recorded with all the instruments in one room at the same time (like a classical jazz recording from the 1950ies), the extraction of individual instruments was a challenge which Lichtenberger took up with shifts, distortions and rearrangements of the original temporality of the material. Except for a few synthesizer sounds and an additional piano recording, he remained largely true to the source material, even though the tracks develop their own unique voice throughout the album.
»Re: phgrp (reworking ›consequences‹ by philipp gropper’s philm)« will be released in cooperation with Whyplayjazz in a limited edition of 500 CDs on October 25, 2019. The cover was screen printed and shows a compositional notation by Grischa Lichtenberger. The album marks the beginning of an encounter between Lichtenberger and Gropper that promises to continue in joint improvisational concert situations and further recordings in the future.

Terrain Reduction is a work inspired by Nicolas Bourriaud’s altermodernist theory. It reflects a similar sound of classic clicks & cuts music of Mille Plateaux, but is structured in a non-linear temporal space. By the use of amalgamate percussions and deep ambient landscapes in some of the tracks, Automatisme tries to make sound space apparent to an accumulation of layers through time, slowly building a topologic archipelago within the multi-temporal universe.

Amelie Lens’ EXHALE imprint launches with a myriad of uncompromising techno tracks from the underground’s finest established and aspiring artists. 

EXHALE’s much anticipated first release continues the legacy of the EXHALE event series with a fifteen original track compilation featuring old and new friends from each avenue of the underground. With a shared love of rave culture, the label is a platform for the forward-thinking while simultaneously paying homage to foundations of techno. With this in mind, Amelie gathers familiar faces and upcoming artists to deliver the future sounds of techno. 

Spanning to each dark corner of the technosphere, the compilation fosters a range of sound that exhibits each artist’s production taste and background. @amelielens & EXHALE events mainstay @airodmusic open proceedings with the ascending ‘Adrenaline’, featuring acid lines and hypnotic vocals, with Spanish techno veteran @regalmusic driving on with authoritative speed and neurotic alarms in ‘Spreading the Cult’. Following his debut on LENSKE, Amelie welcomes @ahl-iver to bring an acid flavour to this compilation along with French talent @feliciemusic, who builds tension early on with raucous track ‘The Devil Himself’. @utobscure0010 & @shdw-music follow with ‘Brennende Erde’, inducing a state of trance with whirring atmospherics. 

Next up is notable Berlin based producer @klangkuenstler with ‘Engelsblut’, an oscillation of stabbing keys, sinister drones and unrelenting hi-hats before transitioning into ‘Take Two’ from @remy-x, whom Amelie discovered after his stand-out EP on Coincidence Records last year. DJ/Producer at the forefront of French techno @antigone proceeds with ‘U Tell Me’, along with @brecc who incorporates industrial elements and thundering bass with track ‘Vox’, continuing with Antwerp producer @lukasfirtzer’s ‘Excessus’, packed with shifting percussions and tenacious melodies. 

Purveyor of modular techno @mrdmrdmrd combines layered atmospherics and euphoric pads in ‘Reach my hand’, followed by Mehen (aka @hadonesector) who maintains pace with his rendering ‘Broken Whisper’, with a disorentiating and melody driven expedition from @francoisx next to switch up momentum. Promising upcoming Dutch producer @gracedahl ensues with the merciless ‘Vermilion Empire’, while production virtuoso @dyenmusic nods to EXHALE’s roots in rave culture with ‘Fantasy’, a medley of spiked vocals and ethereal synths that maintain the energy until the final kick.
