... no rhythms to speak of, most people can't dance to this music, so I consider these tracks and others like them the crown jewel of all my playlists.  There is this audacity, this freedom, and the futility... yes, the futility of making music that one cannot dance to, that's the best part.  I have found that considering the pressures coming from all sides, each and every day, for everyone of us, toward meaning and efficiency, that to go in the exact opposite direction on purpose is sublime. Our mix series 'Look at the State of It' hopes to examine the state of contemporary music, with a focus on 'functional' music. Its curation is a broad selection of well-informed musicians and DJs, who are asked what they think about the state of music, and where it stands in contemporary art and culture. The mixtapes are accompanied by a piece of writing, that should help the listener to understand where these perspectives come from.

Look at the State of It:

then realize that what I heard is something I haven’t heard before.
and it makes me question:
if I never experienced this so far
could this be another truth ?
could this be another fantasy ?
Is there an answer to my question of longing ?

this set shows a lot of my favorite artists and spotlights juke and
jungle and everything hybrid in between and around as the styles that
influences me most: they can be soothing, stressful, weird, funny,
groovy. challenging our listening and dancing behavior and I can’t
express my gratitude for these genres & their artists.

>I’m Mim from MitamineLab, a contemporary sound archive and curatorial project from Mexico City, also a radio show. I’m an art historian/cultural manager and I currently have two jobs, as a studio manager and as a project manager.

q. is there a story behind the mix? how did it come together?

>I just tried to evoque the sensation of living at Mexico city, pretty eclectic and unpredictable. I truly believe that Mexico City is a land of dream where emotions are always running high.

q. in your opinion, what would be the ideal circumstances to enjoy your mix?

>You can enjoy it wherever and whenever you want, maybe in the morning while drinking a good coffee, or even in a sunny afternoon with the company of a good shot of mezcal.

q. describe a favourite object in your living room...

>Is not an object per se, but I love that my living room has a view to the garden.

q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?

>Yeah, I’m working in some music and my first EP ever. Hope to have something ready soon :)

Julia Mira is an Estonian born DJ and visual artist based in The Netherlands. As a part of Red Light Radio, she’s been regularly hosting radio shows, playing club nights and festivals, contributing to the podcasts during the past few years. Diving into diverse music genres, she creates a story, taking listeners on a journey through darkness to the light and back. Her music is a blend of different sentiments, embedding a sensual experience in each set she plays, while at the same time leaving space for imagination, dreams, and mystery.
As a painter, she associates the tracks with colors, which she intuitively uses to create a specific image in the minds of the listeners. From the early electronica, post-punk, raw, industrial, experimental sounds to dreamy ambient and sentimental Italo disco. You can be sure that you will catch your moment of euphoria.

But it's with his Isla label that Rincón has made the largest impact. Starting as a tape imprint in 2016 with releases from You're Me, Big Zen and ZDBT, Isla has since evolved into a full-on vinyl label releasing psychedelic electronic music from Canada and beyond, reaching back into the past with archival material from Exquisite Corpse and new music from Michael Red and Rincón himself.

Second part of the collaboration with @violazionisonore, a partnership that will bring the contribution of one more artist in May, stay tuned.

This time is Corell showing us his art and  techniques. Roman Kutnov is a sound producer, composer and sound artist from Moscow, Russia. During the last decade he worked as a solo artist as well as being involved in collaborative projects from indie-rock bands to improv and contemporary academic music collectives. Having an art background Roman works with artists, performers and choreographers providing music for multimedia installations, dance and theatrical performances.
In 2017 he started Corell - a cross-genre project with the focus on techno and
ambient music. In his works he attempts to find a distinctive sound through combining polymetric beats, atmospheres, textures, mutating and morphing loops and rhizomatic composition structures.
