This is ancient sound played in temples, some 2-3 thousand years ago, and also till date.
These are played when Lord wakes up, sleeps, eats, roams around, goes out for walk, and plays.

I have known Uma Ramasubramaniam for quite a while and had also been involved in a carnatic music CD (http://ragasurabhi.com/carnatic-music/buy-lalithamritham-audio-cd.html). Recently, Uma and Ram had come to Berlin and had a chance to record a couple of songs.

An interesting aspect about the music I have done for the above piece is the use of Graha bedam (Tonic Shift) in the second interlude.  The actual raga of the song is in Hamsanandi. The graha bedam leads it to Hindolam

The tonic shift is done when I change the Shadjamam (Sa, tonic note here is G) to the Rishabam of Hamsanandi (G#). Now the swaras of Hamsanandi are S R1 G3 M2 D2 N3 S' Hindolam scale is reached when I play R1 G3 M2 D2 N3 R1' (which when R1 = S becomes S G2 M1 D1 N2 S').

Manavyala in our Mind, one of our early Carnatic adaptations, became synonymous with our sonic character and theme. Our live version on YouTube that we had played three years ago at my sister's wedding was the first time we had ever performed it. While recording our album IndoSoul we decided to make a studio version of this song as well. There's something about this Thyagaraja krithi in raga Nalinakanthi that continues to fascinate through decades and centuries. Vibrant and positive it can never grow old! Here's our humble tribute to the great composer.
