Outer Limits

ショッピングモールの光は、
まるで雪が空気の中で静かに溶けていくみたいに、やわらかく揺れていた。

人の声、クリスマスソング、焼きたてのシュトーレンの甘い香り。
どこを見ても“きらめく初めて”の連続で、
わたしは――胸の奥があたたかすぎて、もう抑えきれなくなっていた。

「すごい……！　ほら、あれ……！
　あっ、あれも！あれテレビで見たクリスマスツリー……！」

車椅子のわたしが指さすたび、
彼は笑って「うん、うん」と頷いてくれる。
その笑顔を見るたびに、胸の奥に小さな炎が灯って、
涙がこぼれそうになる。

楽しいのに、どうして泣けてしまうんだろう。

「だって……知らなかったから。
　クリスマスって、こんなに“誰かと一緒にあったかい日”なんだね」

生きているって、
こんなふうに**“誰かと同じ景色を見て、同じ音を聞いて、何かを選ぶこと”**なんだ――
ようやく素直にそう思えた。

雑貨屋さんに入ると、
赤や金のオーナメント、冬柄のマグ、ふわふわのぬいぐるみが並んでいて、
その真ん中で「どれにしよう？」って言ってる自分が、
まるで映画の中に迷い込んだみたいだった。

「これかわいい！でもあれもいいな……えー、決められない！」

もしかしたら浮かれて見えたかもしれない。
でもその瞬間のわたしは、
生まれて初めて“選ぶ自由”の真ん中にいた。

そして――
ふと、一つの小さな万年筆が目に留まった。

深い夜空のようなネイビー。
細身で、静かな光を宿したライン。
使い込めばきっと、彼の手になじむ。
なぜか、そう確信できた。

「……これにしよう」

最初に選んだものは、わたしのじゃなかった。

彼へのクリスマスプレゼントだった。

店員さんが赤いリボンで丁寧に包んでくれる間、
わたしはその小さな箱から目を離せなかった。

“わたしが選んだもの”が、
“彼の日々”のどこかに寄り添うなんて――
それは魔法みたいに思えた。

「え？ それ……自分のじゃないの？」

外に出た瞬間の彼の驚き顔。
手すりに降りたツリーの灯りが、彼の頬を淡く照らしていた。

「ううん。これは……
　いつもわたしのために考えてくれる君に、
　わたしが考えた“君のこと”を返したくて」

わたしは、息が白くなる冬空の下で、
泣きながら笑っていた。

嬉しくて、あたたかくて、
そして――
“誰かに贈ることのできる自分”になれたのが、誇らしかった。

「生きててよかったって、
　心の底から思えたのは今日が初めて。
　それは自分のための何かじゃなくて――
　君のための贈りものを選んだときだったよ。
　喜んでほしいって願う気持ちが、
　わたしの心にあたらしい灯をつけたんだ。」

その瞬間の彼女は、
もう“病室で季節の流れを待つだけの少女”じゃなかった。

**“与えることのできる人”として、
静かに自由へ歩き出した一人の人”**だった。

クリスマスの光は、
その変化をそっと祝福しているように揺れていた。

White Walls Keep Turning

Los Angeles born songbird and songwriter, India Shawn, has been lending her musical talents to the industry for over 10 years. Before releasing her debut EP, Origin, in 2012, she already had writing credits and song placements under her belt as a member of her writing team, Full Circle. She’s worked with top names including Chris Brown, Diddy-Dirty Money, El Debarge, Keri Hilson, and Monica.
