This month's transmission of Virology features Asian Dub Foundation founder and bassist Dr. Das aka Dhangsha.

Under this new moniker he makes rhythmic noise with a grounding in dub, and frequently collaborates with London's Sound-space label.

We are kick starting our mix series again!

Following a bit of a break brought about by our now regular show on Netil Radio, we are honoured and very excited to have a recording from Dhangsha, aka Dr Das of Asian Dub Foundation. We have decided to aim our mix series at more particular sounds, with less of a focus on DJs and more on exploring the sounds and influences of producers and bands. Dhangsha has put together an awesome mix, or rather a soundtrack, entitled ‘Refugee Backpacker / Dream Holiday’. HUGE thanks to Dhangsha for this bone rattling journey.

“Refugee Backpacker / Dream Holiday” is an imaginary score assembled by Dhangsha and inspired by Philip K Dick’s “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale,” made famous by the film “Total Recall” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The new interpretation of the story would be made from an anti-colonial perspective with a view to compelling the audience to challenge their prejudices regarding various global relations when confronted with the economic realities underpinning them.

Text from Dhangsha: "Aniruddha Das, better known as “Dr Das,” bassist and co- founder of Asian Dub Foundation has always been interested in all forms of ‘experimental’ sound. Over the last 30 years he has explored ‘noise’ within the context of ‘dub.’ With his current projects he is, to different degrees, dismantling and disintegrating the rhythmic framework to expose the beauty of noise in its own right. As such, he is attempting to demonstrate the proximity of ‘noise’ to the dance floor.

For this session, not only has he drawn upon his work with Dhangsha (Bengali for ‘destruction’) and DSPSSSSD (‘dispossessed’), but he’s presented tracks from various artists who’ve inspired him and who share some of the same sonic rationale, if not sometimes political - namely, people like Bantu, Simon Grab, Sankara Future Dub Resurgence, Hallucinator and Evicshen."

In Gambella, a western province of Ethiopia , thousands of the indigenous inhabitants have been displaced from their lands so that the government can lease it to foreign companies to establish commercial farms. This is in contradiction to official government policy that forbids local farmers from leasing & selling their farmlands.The government has leased the land at ridiculously low prices to these foreign companies so that they can establish large commercial farms.In order to do this ,thousands of the indigenous peoples have been terrorized & forcibly displaced from their lands. Villagers  have been killed and thousands have fled to refugee camps in southern Sudan. While officially the government says there are no problems, that the inhabitants welcome the changes and that they are doing many things to improve the lives of the indigenous peoples, the reality is something else.Little effort has been made to respect the traditional lifestyles of the inhabitants and to provide them with expertise and tools to improve their own cultivation & to support local farmers. Instead the focus has been to facilitate foreign companies from countries like China, India, Pakistan,Saudi Arabi to create large commercial farms where most of what is produced  will go outside of Ethiopia with little benefit to ordinary Ethiopians except officials who are receiving bribes and kickbacks from foreign companies..

C# Tibetan Bowls With Binaural Beats (4hz And 2hz).  I added Binaural Beats at 4hz for the first 20 minutes and 2hz for the remaining set.

Binaural beats are a way of synchronizing your brain waves (which are measured in hertz) with the hertz of the binaural beat. The brain has a frequency following response which causes this to occur. This works best with headphones and is useful for meditation or relaxation. In this case I created three binaural beats. Each section is 10 minutes long and the beginnings are marked with the hits of the singing bowl. The tone is C 256 hz.

Theta - 8hz-4hz - a very meditative state or getting drowsy and drifting off, if your sleepy)

Delta - 4hz and below - deep sleep or a very deep meditative state. Buddhist Monk's brainwaves have been measured in this state during meditation.

 "Primero escribí la línea de bajo de Déjame Pasar para una canción del proyecto DJ's Contra La Fam (que distribuye comida a gente sin recursos en Barcelona) y Simbiosis Kolective en el Hipnotik Fest de Barcelona. Ixquick, de Simbiosis, la escuchó y sugirió recitar el poema Déjame Pasar sobre la línea de bajo y así convertirlo en una nueva pista. Ixquick es de Guatemala y tiene una mezcla de raices mestiza /Maya. También es una gran conocedora de la política e historia indígenas de Guatemala así como de la ciencia Maya. Es una gran amiga de Rosa Chávez, de la que obtuvo el permiso para usar su poema/letra.

IR escuchó una de las mezclas de prueba y le encantó su estilo dub, así que quiso incorporarla a su próximo proyecto. Dj Soundar y Jerome Klur añadieron nuevos sonidos e instrumentación al mix en Francia. Después, Dr Das lo mezcló en el estudio Red Reception de Londres. El track se estrenó en directo en Bogotá en un evento artístico y musical gratuito de DJ Soundar /DubNOIZ / IR y en el que participaron Dr Das, Bantu y Rebel Youth de Colombia. La actuación tuvo lugar frente a un mural gigante de IR en el distrito de la Candelaria y, mientras Dj Soundar pinchaba la canción para un agradecido público, en un muro cercano el grafitero Chite Yarumo pintaba un nuevo mural de IR de Assata Shakur, del partido Panteras Negras. Una fotografía de la tarde del evento hecha por Naira forma parte de la portada del próximo lanzamiento IR29 New Generation Dub. As Dr Das wrote us
" I first wrote the Dejame Passar bassline for a track for the project Artists Contra La Fam who distribute food to homeless people in Barcelona. Ixquick of Simbiosis  Collective heard it and suggested reciting the Dejame Passar poem over it and so making it into a fresh track. 

Ixquick is from Guatemala and is of mestiza /Maya ancestry  and well versed in Guatemala's Indigenous politics and history and Mayan science. She is good friend's with Rosa Chavez who has given her permission to make use of her poetry/lyrics.
[.Rosa Chave is an indigenous poet of the Maya K’iche nation on her father's  side and Maya Kaqchiquel on her mother's side. She has published various books of poetry such as "Casa Solitaria" , "Piedra"  and "Los dos corazones de Elena Kame " ]


 In proper IR fashion, I recorded her voice using the macbook's internal mic."
IR  heard one of the rough mixes and loved its dub feel and wanted to incorporate it into a forthcoming IR project . Dj Soundar and Jerome Klur in France added new sounds and instrumentation to the mix.Dr Das then mixed it at Red Reception studio in London.The track was then premiered live at a free DJ Soundar /DubNOIZ  /  IR  music and art gig  with Dr Das , Bantu and Colombian Rebel Youth in Bogota, Colombia. The gig took place in front of the giant  IR  mural in the Candelaria District and as Dj Soundar played the track live to an appreciative audience a new IR mural of Black Panther  Assata Shakur was being painted in the nearby wall by grafitti artist Chite Yarumo . A photo by Naira  from this afternoon event is part of the cover of the upcoming " IR29 New Generation Dub  " release . This release will be a preview EP  with tracks featuring Sawandi , Dr Das , Gebre Amlak ,Dj  Soundar ,The Ghost , Jerome Klur , Ramjac, Dutty Bookman among others. This will be followed by a full length release which will include this track Dejame Passar .In the meantime enjoy this soaring miltant dub mix from Dr Das and check out his fortHcoming dubnoiz album " Preparing 4 War"

Located at the base of the spine, the pelvic floor, and the first three vertebrae, the root chakra is responsible for your sense of safety and security on this earthly journey. The word Muladhara breaks down into two Sanskrit words: Mula meaning “root” and Adhara, which means “support” or “base.” 

This is the first of the chakras of matter. Balancing the root chakra creates the solid foundation for opening the chakras above. Imagine that you’re laying the foundation for a house in which you’re going to live for a long time. A solid foundation embedded in firm soil will provide the stability you need to create a home filled with joy for years to come.

The root chakra is comprised of whatever grounds you to stability in your life. This includes your basic needs such as food, water, shelter, and safety, as well as your more emotional needs such as letting go of fear. When these needs are met, you feel grounded and safe, and you tend to worry less day to day. 

Whether or not you feel secure now often has less to do with what you have at your disposal and more to do with how safe you felt as a small child. When you consider psychologist Erik Erickson’s stages of development, the first stage—trust versus mistrust—is closely related to your root chakra development. As infants, if your caregivers readily gave you what you needed to survive with consistency, you felt secure in the world. You felt that the world was a place that could be trusted to provide your basic needs. Yet, if your caregivers withheld or delayed in giving you what you needed, or if that giving was inconsistent, you may find yourself with first chakra blockages.

Galdino : Pataxo Warrior ( Sawandi's Defiance In The Shadows Mix) feat Jah 9 , Zumbi &amp;;The Ghost.
Galdino Jesus dos Santos was an indigenous Pataxó activist based in Brasil.
 His story:
 In 1997, he attended an indigenous rights meeting in Brasilia. Unfortunately, he missed the last bus to his lodging and as is the custom for many Brasilians, he stayed all night in the bus shelter in order to catch the morning bus. A group of youths – the sons of the capital’s elite judges and lawyers – found Galdino asleep. They poured gasoline on him and set him on fire, all as part of a cruel joke. Galdino died after suffering burns to 90% of his body. These murderous actions are indicative of how Brasil’s economically powerful elites treat those they perceive as ‘powerless.’
 Our story:
 Indigenous Resistance attended the trial of Galdino’s murderers. We met his family and were shown the coroner’s photos of his charred corpse. I.R. was also witness to the special treatment and light punishment meted out to the murderers. In the years since his death, we have watched the Brasilian media continuously mute all coverage and remembrance of Galdino’s tragedy. This state of neglect stands in sharp contrast to the high visibility given annually for the death of journalist Tim Lopes. But we know that Galdino’s death is not an isolated incident. It opens up urgent issues of land demarcation; the exploitation of resources on indigenous ancestral lands; and the abysmal state of indigenous rights throughout Brasil in general. There is no silence on Galdino’s story – only shadows.

Taking a turn to some of its roots, Emotional Rescue offers a reissue of Ramjac Corporation’s UK house/breaks anthem Cameroon Massif!. First released on the increasingly cult-status Irdial Discs in 1990, this was very much the sound of the big bang explosion of Acid House morphing and splintering, as subsequent multi-genres developed, formed, imploded and reformed in a new ways that still subsists today.  

Within the melting pot of anything goes, chemically-enhanced optimism that spread across the UK during that return to the summers of love from 1987 onwards, the nascent sounds coming from Chicago and Detroit were mixed with a hybrid of 80s British influences, taking in European synth pop, US electro, new beat, hip hop and reggae.  Out of this appeared a new sound, mixing that love of techno and house with dub bass and break beats into a proto-jungle swirl.   

Like many growing up through the ever-evolving 60, 70s & 80s British music scene, Paul Chivers’ early years of learning piano and guitar, moved from Beatles era pop to take in punk, jazz and anything an eager musical mind could explore.  Developing a long-term
interest and study of Cuban and Afro-drumming, his acquisition of an Atari and sampler soon moved to programming of both drum machines and TB303 and with that, Ramjac Corporation was born.

Playing live at some of the earliest raves in 1988, as often through luck and “right time, right place”, including the infamous Back To The Future and Energy parties, Ramjac went from playing from 50 to 10,000 ravers in a matter of months, as the nation was gripped, depending on your cultural standing, by either a mixture of drug apocalypse paranoia or ecstatic celebration.   

It was a meeting with Akin Fernandez, founder of Irdial Discs, that led some of the first studio experiments and creation of Cameroon Massif!.  Utlising Akin’s in-house studio and production skills, alongside Chivers’ jazz influenced outlook of improvisation over arrangement, the track took shape, mixing the live programmed percussion, heavy dose of phase, delay and reverb and Sun Ra inspired keys that resulted in a number of mixes of Massif!.  

Collected here are the original 12” “Massive” and “Massing” mixes, plus a special live version taken from the “Live At Brain” reunion gig of 2009.   The sought after 1990 versions and original Live mix are taken a step further with this 13 mins + mix, in essence a resampling and remixing reversion with didgeridoo and live on mic MCing, that gives a real glimpse of those early live sets.  With more Ramjac Corporation material upcoming and a live reel-to-reel show appearing soon, the return of Cameroon Massif! is now.

Tah dah, the vol. 4 of Gaudi’s PSYCHEDELIC FUTURE DUB series has just landed! Great contributions by some of the hottest and freshest producers/artists from the electronica-dub-glitchy scene! This brand new dub-excursion digs deep and deeper into the intricate realms of the underground before resurfacing with plenty of yet undiscovered precious gems! Many are the unreleased tracks and remixes appearing in this superb 75min sonic journey, including new material from yet semi-unknown producers, to the more established ones and also from Gaudi himself, such as: the featuring on the collaborative track with KRYPTIC MINDS and ERALDO BERNOCCHI (as ROTOR), the brand new dub mix of Gaudi’s song ‘Subtle Obscurity’ from his 2013 album ‘In Between Times’ (Six Degrees Records), the deeply mysterious mashup-Gaudi remix of  “dub-fellas” ALMAMEGRETTA and UPWELLING, the ambient version of ’30Hz Dub Prelude’ from G’s latest solo album ‘Magnetic’ on Rarenoise Records and more surprises to be discovered. 
This new excursion is deep, refined, it’s dark and in moments also goth, the JAH DIVISION dub re-interpretation of ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ says it all, so does it DAYZERO with his ‘Down By Low’ and HEBBE with his ‘B Side Dub’.

Raag Bhairavi (Hindi: भैरबी) (Urdu: بھیرویں‎) is a Hindustani Classical heptatonic (Sampurna) Raag of Bhairavi Thaat. Traditionally it is a morning raga. In modern times, at least in Khyal Gayaki, it is usually performed as the concluding (finale) piece in concerts. It is the defining raga of its own Thaat.
Carnatic music has a Bhairavi raga which is quite different from the Hindustani raga.
Hanumatodi in Carnatic music has the same scale as the Bhairavi in Hindustani music.

Absolutely fire showcase of St. Lucia’s Kuduro Soca or “Dennery Segment” sound, a local style notorious for slack lyrics and its hi-NRG pace, here served up spicy as fuck by one of the Caribbean island’s premiere DJs for Uganda’s Nyege Nyege Tapes.

Packing pure heat from the town of Dennery in St. Lucia’s Mabouya Valley, DJ Chengz’ mixtape extends an unmissable introduction to Dennery Segment, a fast and grimy offshoot of the Angola “Hard ass” style of Kurudo that’s been banned in the region for its blend of salacious lyrics and rave-inciting rhythms. Also incorporating strong influence from Zouk and Lucian drums, Dennery Segment is a super strong example of punkishly road level party music from the Afro-Caribbean diaspora that highlights the pronounced, technoid Portuguese accent dominating global dancefloor dialogues right now.

Catching 67 minutes of rudely stripped down drum loops and hooks locked with MCs chatting sexually charged filth in Kwéyòl (Saint Lucian Creole), the mix arguably recalls the energy of Carnival as much as the grime and Soca that went into UKF, and bristles with the electric rawness of early Marfox and classic Príncipe. But the defining feature is really the raunchy lyrical content, working in a long tradition of XXX-rated Soca styles but with a bang up-to-the-second sense of economy and directness touching on everything from alcohol problems to “Sex like spaghetti”, and galvanised by the jabbing, gruffly rhythmelodic urgency of the productions.

Little known beyond the region, perhaps aside from diaspora carnivals in US and EU, the infectious percolations of Dennery Segment are bound to incite fervent reactions with all discerning dancers and listeners who love it as rugged and rawly stylish as it comes. DJ Chengz’ expertly selected and blended mixtape is the ideal entry point to Kuduro’s latest mutation for anyone with hips and ears attuned to thrilling new music from the tropics.

“IR Sonic Interventions” was first broadcast on 18th July 2020, on Raskattas Radio, based in Sofia, Bulgaria. It featured Sankara Future Dub Resurgence, Dhangsha and Dub Sisters Mapu, Apachita and Esaete. For those who listened in, it was like an exhilarating live gig - raw in sound and text with punk attitude, but disciplined like a Peoples' Army on manoeuvres - everyone jumping in to take the baton then passing it on - everyone looking out for everyone else.



This is what happens when sonic experimentation and co-operation moves music and text beyond current convention. The political commentary and degree of analysis demonstrated a depth that is missing from present day dub, but not at the expense of dance propulsion. Bob Marley and his contemporaries created a framework of militant poetry with which to uplift the spirits of oppressed people. But over forty years on, it is not enough to merely REPRODUCE that template. 



As Sankara FDR say: “this is no photocopy dub.” Aside from spoken testimonies, the session was comprised of field recordings, acoustic rhythms and melodies and uncompromising programmed sequences. It was assembled using a variety of techniques: post-punk cut & paste, dub mixology and live electronic improvisation. This was in fact an ‘alternative news broadcast,’ unashamedly betraying a robust anti-colonial perspective. It was on THAT level.

Sankara Future Dub Resurgence is a group of musicians from Uganda living in  the city of Kampala and in the area near Lake Nalubaale  ,Uganda. They collaborated with  IR ::Indigenous Resistance and Dhangsha to produce the four track EP

Sankara Future Dub Resurgence with Dhangsha, Mapu & Apachita : IR Sonic interventions

Indigenous Resistance has just launched a new full length 12-track cd IR25 Dubversive. This album has tracks "Ivere...The Land," "Luana," and "Sacred Power Dr Das Ragga Mix" all featuring indigenous performers from the South Pacific, most notably from the Solomon Islands.

The roots reggae track "Luana" is sung totally in an indigenous language from the Solomon's and features singers Tohununo and Dublikkle One in a song dedicated to all children whose rights are being disrespected. 

"Ivere..the land" is about environmental devastation and is a collaboration between a US-based singer of black, indigenous and European ancestry, ChristianeD  and Olovotu, an indigenous composer and musician from the south pacific. Ace producer Soy Sos takes indigenous  instruments and beats recorded by Olovotu and adds his own personal touch to them to create a swirling dance floor groove that mixes chants with Christiane D mezmerising lyrics and vocal styling. The track "Sacred Power Dr Das Ragga Mix" features vocals from Solomon Islands performer Tohununo alongside traditional singing from indigenous people in Canada within a reggae ragga riddim created by the founder and bassist of Asian Dub Foundation, Dr Das. "This Land Is Not For Sale..." is about Atenco, a classic land-rights struggle. For some time, IR had been aware of the siege of Atenco and had been following the news through its direct and underground channels. When Asian Dub Foundation contacted us about working on a collaboration around this issue, it made perfect sense to us. Land rights are the center of many indigenous struggles and IR has done tracks & grafitti projects related to this matter. With tracks on recent IR releases, we have hoped to illuminate the independence movement in West Papua, the The Free West Papua Movement (OPM), the plight of the Krikati people of Brasil, or the Minga Indigenia of Colombia. This new collaboration was created through the internet with musical mixes, speech fragments, and ideas flying back and forward in the digital domain. IR's network of dubversive members working in shadows across the Americas from Peru to Colombia, made their contributions by editing, transcribing, translating and recordings. These were relayed via the net to ADF in the UK. 

This is the 25th release on the IR label which over the last 6 years has done numerous collaborations with indigenous performers from the South Pacific doing collaborations solely through the internet which linked musicians like ADF and Adrian Sherwood with performers in the South Pacific. In fact the first 7-inch vinyl, IR2, released by IR was a track for the Free West Papua movement.
