GROUNDERS' new album will be available May 12.

“Where do you go? Waiting around, where do you go from here?” wonders the chorus of “Secret Friend,” the first single from GROUNDERS’ debut self-titled LP. 

With a dreamy, reverb-drenched intro, the song drifts alongside layers of wobbly arpeggiated synth lines and space-age guitar melodies. It’s the opening track, and it’s also a fitting intro to GROUNDERS. It shimmers and gleams, but there’s a scrappy, stripped-back undertone that chips away at any polish. For every catchy hook and lush arrangement throughout the album there’s a woozy counterpoint that keeps things slightly off-kilter. 

Where do you go from here? Into the weird and wonderful pop world of GROUNDERS.  

This spring, the Toronto-based band – Andrew Davis (vocals and guitar), Daniel Busheikin (keyboards), Mike Searle (Bass) and Evan Lewis (guitar) – will release their first full-length album, a collection of dense and intricate pop music under the gauzy veil of krautrock and psychedelia.   In the time between releasing the Wreck of a Smile EP in 2013 and laying demos for their debut album, GROUNDERS rediscovered their love for classic pop music, an appreciation that had waned over the years as they became obsessed with circumventing the conventional. They listened to pop staples like David Bowie and Devo, and revisited old favourites like Velvet Underground, Neu and the Zombies. When GROUNDERS finally came up for air, they had a newfound love for pop and a glut of ideas for a debut LP.  

Meanwhile, Meditation for Dummies and David Lynch’s self-help guide Catching the Big Fish, on transcendental meditation and the creative process, were passed around the van while touring through North America. As Davis’s interest in meditation increased, his lyrics began to reflect his search for serenity and inner peace. 

The album came to life in two distinct spaces: Davis’s bedroom in Toronto’s sleepy High Park neighbourhood; and a spacious two-car garage packed with vintage gear from various pawn shops and second-hand stores across the country. 

After recruiting DIANA’s Kieran Adams to handle drums, the band headed into the studio with longtime pal Marcel Ramagnano (Born Ruffians, Absolutely Free) to record. Months of tracking, tinkering and layering later, GROUNDERS enlisted the incomparable David Newfeld (Broken Social Scene, Holy Fuck) to give each song the bombastic, fried analog treatment he’s become known for.   

First single "Secret Friend" sounds like a bleached and sunbaked Zombies; “Vyvanse,” which yes, is named after the ADHD drug, contains a lilting guitar riff that’ll break your heart; “Pull It Over Me” careens into the dreamy ether courtesy of a wistful cyclical guitar that’s the epitome of a lazy summer’s day; “No Ringer” is a wobbly Silver Apples trance doused in a saxophone freak-out; "Fool's Banquet" sparkles like early Broadcast flooded by constant glistening waves of pleasure.  After cross-country tours, an acclaimed debut EP and a David Lynch-inspired spiritual journey, GROUNDERS have finally come of age.

Nightlands, the project of Philadelphia-based Dave Hartley (best known as a core member and longtime bassist of The War On Drugs), will release his third album, I Can Feel the Night Around Me, on May 5th via Western Vinyl. I Can Feel the Night Around Me showcases Hartley's ability to layer his voice and conjure some of the most beautiful virtual choirs in modern music. Throughout, he uses meticulous choral arrangements and wistful major-seventh chords to evoke a longing for a future that once lay ahead, but has drifted out of reach. Today, Nightlands presents selections from the forthcoming release: “Fear of Flying,” “Only You Know,” and “Depending On You.” These follow lead single, “Lost Moon.”

“Fear of Flying,” one of the album’s most immediate songs, was composed with minimalist synth virtuoso Frank LoCrasto. Soft tangles of voice wash up on the shore of the song's warbling synth backbone, nudging the album briefly into the sunlight without sacrificing its melancholy, late-night vibe.

Hartley covers a number off Dion's Phil Spector-produced Born to Be With You with “Only You Know.” "I recorded it for fun, as break from the seriousness that can infect record-making," Hartley says. "Interpreting other people's songs allows you to wear a new hat and take chances that don't naturally occur to you. I wanted to croon a little bit, which I don't normally do." The recording pushes his voice to new heights and blends remarkably well with the rest of the album's shades of psyched-out doo wop, also heard on the adoring “Depending On You.”
 
Nightlands will tour North America following the album’s release. The Nightlands live band is Dave Hartley on vocals and guitar, Anthony LaMarca (The War On Drugs, Dean & Britta) on drums, Eliza Hardy Jones (Strand of Oaks, Grace Potter an the Nocturnals) on keys and vocals, Jesse Hale Moore on keys and vocals and Scott Churchman (Chubby Checker) on bass.

Boys is the solo project of Stockholm based musician Nora Karlsson, originally from Umeå in the north of Sweden, and after over a year’s wait she’s back with new material in the shape of her new single “Rabbits”, the follow-up to last year’s acclaimed Love on Tour EP. “Rabbits” is recorded and produced with Hannes Ferm and it’s her first studio recording, as well as a first taste of Boys’ upcoming debut LP which is due next spring.

Boys made its debut with the EP Kind of Hurt in the fall of 2015, a collection of home-recorded tracks that Nora recorded on her own outside of her work as the guitarist of Swedish psych pop act HOLY, and which were just too good to not be released. Soon she’d recorded a new EP and Love on Tour was released in May 2016 to praise from the likes of Stereogum, The Line of Best Fit, DIY and GoldFlakePaint, while also making her UK live debut in the fall of 2016. During the same time she was alternating headline shows in her native Sweden with support slots to the likes of Fear of Men and Omni.

Since then it’s been quiet from Boys, but now Nora Karlsson is back with her strongest track yet, a first taste of what’s to come. “Rabbits” is being released digitally in early October as well as on split 7” vinyl together with Magic Potion’s “Rest Yr Skull” single on October 20 via PNKSLM Recordings. An intimate journey of deconstructing and healing - Indira’s debut single, ‘Restart’ peels away the walls we build in coping with pain. Evoking an eerie, Lynchian fusion of cinematic folk and alt-rock, Indira captures her influences from Cocteau Twins to Leonard Cohen, Portishead to Feist in her transportative sound.

From her upcoming album, titled ‘Songs from a Moon, Songs by the Sun’, ‘Restart’ was written while living in Paris and growing into womanhood. It is an early reflection on heartbreak, laced with pure and premature wisdom. 
 
Composed, arranged, produced and recorded by Indira in her apartment and beautifully mixed by Antonia Gauci, ‘Restart’ is the first window into her ethereal, humming world.
