Kai Meara's Ambidextrience - February 2022

For our next podcast we head out to the Far East, specifically to Chiba in Japan, where the cult favourite DJ Nobu resides. From there the man behind legendary party Future Terror and esteemed label Bitta has been putting out weird electronics, spacey electro and atmospheric techno since the late 90s. He releases rather infrequently, but when he does you can be sure he never does the same trick twice. It is the same story when he is DJing: he always manages to conjure up fresh tricks, textures and tunes depending on the situation and has put out many official mix CDs to that end. From contemporary electronic pieces to abstract techno, his wide repertoire has made him a favourite with the likes of the Berghain crew and Hessle Audio associate Ben UFO, who played with him recently at the Red Bull Music Academy, whilst he also played a stand out set on Boiler Room at our own Dekmantel festival earlier in the year.

The podcast he has put together for us is just over an hour of occult ambient littered with the sounds of the Far East. It is patient and absorbing, zoned out and eerie as well as being hugely organic and natural sounding. Drums only appear in the latter half and when they do, they still come embellished with pixel thin pads, metallic surfaces and harmonic sounds that continue to sooth your mind in fresh new ways. 

Dekmantel Podcast 042 - DJ Nobu

It's a special laidback radio mixed compilation of very intimate sounds from various parts of the world; it makes you travel smoothely from Belgium, to Greece, to Japan into naïve emotional spheres. There is a big cinematic touch in it, which obviously is inspiring and influencing myself very much on my own music.

Number 32 in the series is @nsaofficial, Justin and Steve, friends since high school who have forged a great reputation as both dj's and promoters, hosting their NSA parties in Edinburgh with amazing guests over the years. We love their style and reckon they're two of the best track selectors around. Check out this beauty of a mix and gain a glimpse into their world.

1) Introduce yourself?

2) What have been your highlights from the last 12 months?

We had a great 2016 settling back into Edinburgh’s underground scene. All the parties we put on have been fantastic for many different reasons but it was a pleasure to have Optimo play for us for the first time.

3) What do you have lined up for the coming year?

We had a longer break than expected this Winter so we will be picking up our bi-monthly NSA presents again in Edinburgh’s Mash House kicking of with A Love From Outer Space on March 10th which has already sold out.

In May we celebrate 22 years of our club night which has lasted a lot longer than either of us anticipated and we have put together a very special line up to mark the occasion with Andrew Weatherall & Ivan Smagghe back to back all night long.

We will also be playing at this years Alfresco Festival in Tunbridge wells with a whole host of great acts, starting our irregular club at Sneaky Pete’s which is a really cool small space which we hope will have a similar intensity to the early parties we put on. We will be doing something for the Edinburgh Festival and then bringing up a few new acts to NSA before the year is out.

Solid Steel (10th February) In Hour 1 we hand over to you the legendary MJ Cole, who has been producing for two decades and was a leading figure on the UK Garage scene, gaining chart success and working with a host of artists from Elisabeth Troy to Wiley and more recently AJ Tracey. His mix for Solid Steel shows another side to his musical tastes with a beautiful set taking in music from the likes of Jon Hopkins, Nils Frahm, Floating Points, Steve Reich, Radiohead and Bonobo , plus some of his own productions. He told us;
