“Baseline Pumpin….Jumpin….Thumpin”……The sound of the Mid 90s UK House explosion

This time of year I always take a look at the past 12 months of tunage to assess this particular vintage in the annals of all things H.O.U.S.E. What’s particularly prevalent this year are producers continued fascination with the ‘90s, taking inspiration especially from the peak years of ‘94 through to ‘98. Tracks from Bicep and PBR Streetgang suck up these influences and spit out a heady concoction of '90s samples and vibes but with a modern twist that make them so endearing . So why exactly was this period so great and why are producers still using this period as a reference point?

A lot has been said and written about house music’s first summer of love and its influence to this day. If you have a spare bit of time (like a few hours!) search this blog for my take on that period and how the music and culture turned the world I grew up in on its head in the space of a few short years. Fast forward to the mid-90s and a myriad of new genres had come along for punters. Hardcore, Jungle, US Garage, Techno, Ambient, Acid Jazz…..the list goes on. As a result my own musical and clubbing tastes took a rather scatter gun approach up until '94. I was as likely to end up at Peckham Laserdrome going to a Jungle night as I was to end up at The Escape in Brighton for a Acid Jazz party, but soon a sound was to emerge that was very unique to the UK and launched the house scene into the Superclub era and beyond.

It’s hard to give this genre of house a handle…some call it pumping house, banging house, tough house…but nothing has really stuck to define totally. What’s true is the scene took influences from US Garage, Euro House and even UK breakbeat/Rave to produce a cocktail of high octane beats accessible to all. The “heads” loved the dubs, the ex-ravers loved the “hands in the air” anthems, the girls loved the vocal screamers. There was something for everyone and it seemed like the whole country was going out to clubs playing this type of house……and I mean everyone. DJs worked their asses off doing gig after gig on the circuit up and down the country. It seemed like every town in the land had a club playing this type of music. Club nights like Progress in Derby, Back to Basics in Leeds, Miss Moneypenny’s in Birmingham…..even Club XS in Folkestone had a night where the likes of Seb Fontaine and Judge Jules graced the decks! It was like a group of 20 or so DJs had taken over the country and were spreading the good word week after week after week………….and the country lapped it up.

My mix try’s to recreate a specific period before the scene started to split into the UK Garage and Hard House scenes. For a few short years we all played nicely in the sandpit and produced the amazing scene that new producers still draw from to this day. I’m not supplying any track-listing not because I’m a lazy shite but in keeping with the mixtape ethos of that time.

So push the back the sofa, pop open a Two Dogs or Hooch and pretend you’re back in Camden Palace circa 1996………………..enjoy!

10 years ago two of the worlds most prominent DJs were preparing for the Delta Heavy US arena tour, the likes of which this country had never seen before. Coming off the back of a successful residency at New York's super club Twilo, Sasha and Digweed were in prime position to take underground EDM to the US mass market and beyond. Fast forward to 2012 and some commentators see this era as a watershed moment in the US, showcasing this type of music to cities that had never experienced it before. 

This mix, broken up into two halves, takes you back to a time before Giuliani's "quality of life" campaign had taken the heart out of New York's club culture, only recently to be returned by today's current crop of energetic promotors. Mixed live, this mix hopefully takes you back and relives some happy memories……I know I had a lot of fun putting it together…..enjoy!
