Ben Matheson infiltrated Edmonton’s Hip-Hop scene as Indycysive in 2019 and has been a force to be reckoned with since. While his style doesn’t conform to just one sub-genre, Indycysive opens a discourse on his childhood in Southern Ontario, mental health, and society. 
Indycysive was born the youngest of three into a family with a passion for art. Indy developed an appreciation for music’s ability to bring up profound thoughts and emotions at an early age; this theme naturally bleeds into his current work. It wasn’t until he started playing guitar at the age of sixteen that he began to use music as a coping mechanism. Before discovering his love of Hip-Hop, Indycysive’s favourites carried an alt-rock influence including System of a Down, Linkin Park, and Nirvana. Swollen Members was the first of many groups that led his transition to Hip-Hop.
Indycysive’s introduction to the local scene started at “The Frat.” Beginning down a path of self-discovery, Indy teamed up with friend and fellow artist, Chazzy Boo, to create the Vibe Series. Instead of hosting typical frat parties, their focus was on creating an atmosphere that matched their positive vibe while also connecting with other local artists. Indy has also been featured through Phunkdified (@pkfdlive), an Edmonton-based Instagram page that hosts beat battles, as well as both live and virtual cyphers. Indycysive compares this stage of his career to adolescence, a time to develop and experiment. Having outsourced the engineering of his first two projects, Indy’s most recent goal has been to maintain his own sound by producing it himself.
