One of Berlin's most impactful artists, Silvia Jiménez Alvarez aka JASSS (@jass-29) is a Berlin-based sound artist, producer and DJ born and raised in Asturias in northern Spain, she continually disrupts continually disrupts the conventions of electronic dance music. Rooted in heavy bass, she flawlessly combines elements of techno, electro, DnB, pop samples, tribal rhythms, and folk melodies, developing an offbeat musical language with a mysterious cult film vibe. As a resident member of Berghain's Säule and Herrensauna, her precise control over the nighttime atmosphere is undeniable. Her sensory stimulation is intense, ranging from fast to slow, light to dark, with tightly packed, highly impactful climaxes. The bright metallic sounds draw listeners in irresistibly, leaving them entranced until the set is over.

Her album "A World Of Service," released under Ostgut Ton, sits at the intersection of abstract electronics and baroque industrial pop. Her bold and effortless approach stems from her experiences with mental illness, exploring fragmented and disintegrating sounds and vocals. Through lyrics and music, she deconstructs the self, revealing dimensions of life amidst chaotic forms and tumultuous thoughts, like a dark and lavish drama. Two tracks featured in the highly acclaimed Whities series from the AD 93 label are said to be inspired by her formative years during the rave era. These tracks sound both retro and futuristic, deadly in every second, and effortlessly sweep across major dance floors.

My World My Way was the name of @e-saggila's album back in 2019. It perfectly encapsulates her brazen approach to sound which chews up and spits out everything from noise to breakcore to techno. The Iraq-born, Toronto-based artist has always revelled in the contrast between tempos, shocking rhythms and distorted textures. Part of the thrill of listening to it is the sense it could all collapse at any moment, whether releasing on her label Summer Isle or the likes of Opal Tapes, Hospital Productions, and Northern Electronics.

This week she delivers an hour of pure electronic potency that brings to life her uniquely dystopian visions. Staring in what sounds like a haunted underground metro station, she then transitions into futuristic worlds of pulsating bass, squealing synths, scratchy melodies and hyper-driven percussive patterns that race along into the unknown. It's an abstract selection of sound that is cerebral and cinematic but will also cause utter carnage in a club setting.

A former resident at OHM and Berghain's Säule, her 2017 debut Weightless on iDEAL propelled her onto the global stage, with performances at Sónar, MUTEK, and beyond. She has held residencies at EMS Stockholm, Galeria Zé dos Bois, and Villa Massimo. In 2020, she released Turbo Olé / We Solve This Talking on Whities, further cementing her avant-garde approach.

In an time of almost surveillance-like coverage of popular musicians, where artists are expected to be 100% available and known to their fans, there stands Burial. Antithetical to the social media era, William Bevan continues to be (mostly) a figure of mystery to his legion of fans.  

His signature sound transmutes a postmodern patchwork of samples – R&B vocals, video game soundtracks, field-recorded ephemera, and organic percussive elements – into a club melancholia that could only come from London.

Seasonally appropriate, Aphix’s debut for Montreal’s Infinite Machine pushes aside the brisk autumn air to reveal an eerie-yet-uncanny collection of four club-ready experiments, due out Halloween Eve. Ruby Grooves is an exercise in disemboweling modern Grime and Club, leaving their structure and palette laid bare within a haunting melodic cathedral, casting a subtle glance towards the likes of Logos, Clouds, Liar, Wen, Visionist and the ilk.

ED200 sets the pace with a tabla ricocheting under saturated organs & monk chorus as a broken club beat pulsates beside metallic growls. The title track, following suit, ethereally hovers over a mutated dembow before devolving into a pulse bass call-and-response.

Into Spheres resurrects the strings & drums of archetypical Grime, mildly detuned and broken, respectively, so as to unsettle, as a distant church bell reverberates indefinitely in the fog. A cliffhanger of an ending, the farewell Trick or Truth buries distorted pulses under decaying synths, slipping out of hand until it’s gone.
