Hot on the heels of nosync’s ‘Soundsystem Music’, Plasma Sources is proud to present Beton Brut’s ‘Project Researcher’, a 4-track offering of no nonsense, dancefloor-ready electronics which take influence from experimental club music, grime and musique concrète.

Having previously released standout EPs on CYTE Records, Beton Brut has built a reputation for delivering distinctively sparse and heavy-hitting productions which have garnered support from the likes of Mumdance, LCY and Walton. On ‘Project Researcher’, Beton Brut takes his sound and develops it even further. 

In the producer’s own words, the EP is “about materials - raw, straight and to the point”. This approach is evident from the opening track ‘Tom Machine’, as ASMR-inducing squelches are bottled inside an environment which bubbles with molecular detail, and pitted against clinically arranged percussion sequences. 

Up next, ’Lighter’ pulses with Beton Brut’s signature blend of grime-influenced bass-weight and snatches of pirate-radio MC chatter. ‘EMCA’ doubles down on this approach, with a more identifiable rhythm sure to keep heads bouncing at peak time. 

‘LSTS’ rounds things off with an approach to bass programming which feels like listening to a biological entity undergoing a process of evolution and regression. The palette feels viscous and shifting here, with abstracted percussion and gunshots populating this sparse environment. 

As an EP, ‘Project Researcher’ feels like the auditory equivalent of observing a chemical process inside a petri-dish. Beton Brut sets himself up as a scientist on this release, meticulously collecting individual samples from the deep corners of YouTube, introducing these into abstracted environments and observing the reaction.

Balancing analogue & acoustic soundworlds with digital and synthetic aesthetics, Stolen Velour, FLOCO & Aria SL first began working on the EP back in 2022. They debuted their lead single ‘Lilium’, a cover of the main theme to anime ‘Elfen Lied’ which is written in Latin, at Loughborough Junction’s Spanners alongside a lineup including Petal Supply, Himera, Iglooghost & Umru. Some months after, they continued to perform iterations of the track amongst other music at varied spots like The White Hotel & Laylow, which informed their approach to music as three collaborators. They eventually completed ‘Long Way Round’ over the summer of 2023 via several sessions across London & Leeds. In a sudden burst of creativity, they completed the final two tracks a year later, forming a fully-fledged EP spanning contemporary classical, folk, pop, experimental electronic and more. Using extended classical and experimental techniques within a pop music context, the EP foregrounds narrative leitmotifs to chronicle a departure from naivety and innocence into a darker, more complex world. With all three artists coming from their own corners of the music world, their EP ‘Holdfast’, named after the anchoring root system of seaweeds, enmeshes their love of synthetic & analogue technologies with the beauty inherent in periods of personal transformation.

After 5 standout releases, including debuts from many fresh faces to the left-of-field underground scene, Plasma Sources presents its inaugural compilation: Multi-Source. It brings together the current label family and a slew of other artists operating on the cutting- edge of dance floor electronics for a multi-genre, sound design heavy, wild ride. In turn, the label takes aim at establishing itself as one of the most exciting imprints in the experimental club scene.
From the 90BPM cinematic, Lorn-esque sludge of newcomer Guide’s ‘Gemological’ to the crisp staccato transients and negative space of Ziyiz’s ‘Plastic Sentiments’, each track adheres to one of the guiding principles that the label has employed so effectively to curate it’s platform, irrespective of tempo: a love for sci-fi aesthetics and a desire to transpose these into sonic equivalents.

Plasma Sources has always prided itself on delicately balancing dark and light, release to release. On Multi-Source, this broad spectrum is in full vision. Reinartz offers up dubbed- out, IDM-esque desolation on ‘Action Bias’, whilst Stolen Velour’s ‘Suigetsu’ brings a bright playfulness - high-pitched vocal cuts marry pulsating, organic beats which sound like if Untold’s Hemlock output got a 2024 facelift. Some tracks, like Prior Self’s brooding yet fidgety ‘Turn Out’ and Klahrk & Atrice’s flange-fuelled ‘You’ve Changed’ occupy the centre of this continuum with their takes on high-tempo techno-influenced mutations.

The full label family comes back to join in on the fun. HYPNA and NIQH team up on a collaboration which perfectly unites their sounds under a 4-bar bass-heavy roller laden with noise. NIQH offers up their own track, exploring crystalline club structures on ‘Pressure’. unearth’s cinematic, wasteland-ridden sound is in clear focus on ‘Safe Tread’ and Beton Brut’s signature grime-concrète comes through loud and clear on ‘WWW’.

Cortical offer up ‘Hammer’, a continuation of their relentless avant-techno manifesto established by their debut, whilst J-Shadow rounds things off with a space-age jungle- exploration on ‘X-38'.
The juxtaposition of dark and light. The delicate balancing of experimentalism and dance floor sensibilities. The interweaving of sci-fi and biologically-infused sound design. These are the key aesthetics with which Plasma Sources has approached its output ever since release no.1.
Multi-Source acts as a confirmation of this manifesto as it looks forward to 2025 and its future as a key player in the experimental club scene.

Latvian producer W3C, taking his moniker from the acronym for the World Wide Web Consortium, affords oversight to the totality of the Internet comparable to his namesake standards organization. And where the latter concerns itself with education, outreach and software development, the former is a pastiche and collage savant – using online connectivity and access to wrangle all strains of electronic music and collide their respective particles into an unrecognizable, yet eerily inviting sonic edifices.

Debuting in style, earlier this year, with the vinyl-only “Atmospheric Entry” EP, via Pinch’s Tectonic-side-venture Cold Recordings, W3C now joins the Infinite Machine family with “State Of Absolute Alienation”, on 12” and digital.

Opener “Ascension (Intro)” does what it says on the tin – it stands as an apt overture to the proceedings herein, leaning on harsh, bass-heavy noise bursts before sprinkling in grime decorations and ascendant, reverb-drenched, hollow-synth contrapuntal melody that very much anchors the record into the now, referencing the likes of instrumental grime revivalists such as Dark0, Murlo or Slackk.

“Xenotrack” then shifts gears into what sounds like an inspired take on the psytrance of yesteryear, only slower, steadier… A degraded, alien morphology supporting a nonetheless “club” grammar - making the title, yet again, quite self-explanatory.

…Which rings true a third time for “Bot-o’-War”, a raucous industrial epic which evokes a combat deployment scene in a mecha-centric direct-to-video feature, wherein the subtle naval theming of the title is aurally transcribed into the suffocating, submerged sound design of the latter half.

On the flip, “Short Circuit” (the grimiest of the lot), an unintuitive blend of Mumdance doing his thing, a run-of-the-mill “Ice Rink” homage and a trap lead that could turn heads at a GHE20G0TH1K party, somehow works.

Finally, “Invasion”, replete with sci-fi-blockbuster-trailer aesthetics, sounds like if Two Steps from Hell remixed a mash-up of individually much subtler cuts from Pan Sonic and Gatekeeper, respectively.
Absolute alienation indeed.
