We Built a Private World

 A dense and velvet night; a single star a silver flame
A vast and magic light and life would never be the same
The moon retreats from sight; behind a cloud it disappears
The way ahead becomes clear
In a mood infinitude
That was the year we climbed the mountain
That was the year of childhood’s end
That was the year we learned fear: we’ll never pass that way again
In the village there was trouble brewing: the machinations of evil men
Twisted lies their own undoing: we’ll never pass that way again

You can’t tell left from right; the finite from infinity
Distinguish dull from bright: the inner guide a certainty
The Southern Cross alight: it points out to the endless sea
The voyage to becoming me
The final state is solitude
That was the year we found the valley
And found our journey’s end
We didn’t shed a single tear: there was no message to send
In the village there was acquiescence the opposition sullen and pale
The goal was reached by sheer persistence and a refusal to fail

 
We built a private world of noble heart and strong resolve
A golden flag unfurled; the many into one dissolve
The knower and the known: no soul is ever quite alone
And that’s the way the seed is sewn
The face of God is everywhere
We walk the valleys and the mountains
We seek a guide and friend
We drink of life from purest fountains
And reach our journey ‘s end
In the village there were people singing
And peaceful counsel reigned at last
They gave a blessing to our new beginning
And merged the future and the past.
