The Sunrise II

Better late than never. 

There is so much I could write to try to explain or disclaim this mix, but long story short; this music got me through 2021, the weirdest year of my life… Yet.

My vision for this ersatz Sunrise Set is a continuous dance-flow and a highly contemporary musical journey curated for the transition from night to morning that is an unmissable festival experience for those who know (if you know, you know).

This mix took a very long time to compile. That time was full of uncertainty, self-doubt, loneliness and growth. I dont know what happened with this years sunrise mix, but it’s about as moody as a DJ who hasn’t raved in two years. The selection is an homage to last years edition and collected throughout 2021 whenever something had that certain feel to it. I also had a massive help from my partner Tracee’s dance prowess and superlative taste in music, without her I’d be lost. We actually met eachother at a Sunrise Set at Shambhala!

Dark: 140-125 bpm Rap / Deep Dubstep / Grime. Vocal. Seizing the last bit of the night.
Dawn: 125-95 bpm Contemporary Hip-Hop/ RNB. Transition from darkness to sunrise.
Sunrise: 95 bpm Hip-Hop + Dancehall. Big vibrations and vocal curation to keep things going.
Morning: 80-130 bpm RNB / Electronica. A blend of anthems and vibes for big feelings and conclusion.

The SUNRISE II

mʊdʌki is chasing the aesthetics of the 90s raves which she will never experience, creating a model situation of an inaccessible club culture mirage. In her dj identity mʊdʌki flows in between bass music of such subgenres as jungle, dubstep, dub, juke, and avant garde experimental electronic music together with sound art, through a wide branch of techno – deep, minimal, breakbeat, industrial and hard acid techno tunes, all with a strong accent on the leftfield music scene. She is one of the founding members of phonon~ crew, mediating experimental electronic music and sound art in czech republic.

DJ WRONG TOOL aka wahlweise auch DJ LATE PUBERTY vermengt als akustische Reiseleiterin gern Untergrund mit Mainstream über Ländergrenzen hinweg, liebt es auf dem musikgeschichtlichen Zeitstrahl und in unterschiedlichsten Genre-Schubladen umher zu springen und althergebrachtes in leicht waghalsige Neuinterpretationen zu überführen. Infinite Sequence Podcast #059 - DJ Wrong Tool (DCA C.Rockefeller, Dresden)

Nach einer kleinen Pause geht's bei uns mit Grawinkel vom Leipziger Soundsystem Kollektiv 2 Guys 1 Dub weiter. Seit er durch Dubstep seinen Weg in die Bass Music Szene fand, ist er seinem Genre treu geblieben und ist mit einer Reihe abwechslungsreicher und ausgesprochen guter Releases z.B. für das kalifornische Label Badman Studios oder die beglische Dubstep Institution DUPLOC am Start.
Grawinkels Set für usere Reihe ist ein Mix oldschooliger und neuer Dubstep Gems mit deutlich hörbaren Einflüssen der Croydon Pioneers.

Infinite Sequence Podcast #060 - Grawinkel (2 Guys 1 Dub, Dresden)

Seit 2016 ist Gwinn aktives Mitglied des DJ-Kollektives Küchenrave und bringt sowohl digital als auch mit Platte die Floors zum Glühen. Mit großem Interesse an den unkonventionellen Seiten von Drum&Bass, hat er sich auch mittlerweile seinen Platz in der Dresdner Szene bereitet, doch seit einigen Jahren verschlägt es ihn auch immer wieder in die Welt von düsterem Trap, Dubstep und Breakbeat. The Heliopause is the boundary of the heliosphere, which is the region of space encompassing the solar system in which solar wind has a significant influence. Heavy distortion, and sound design throughout the track gives a sense of controlled chaos, similar to that of the invisible barrier of solar wind.

the SUNRISE 2020

It’s been weird to wrap my head around releasing content right now with the way the world is. i’ve also been grappling with depression and anxiety which has convoluted things to an unprecedented level. This particular project I felt compelled to complete for many reasons and because I hope that it will help people stay home. I also think it might help channel a feeling that we sunrise ravers miss so dearly and if listeners explore the tracklist they will discover a mostly BIPOC assortment of incredible artists that make songs that truly change my mental state to a present and calm vibration. I personally owe my life to the music of the BIPOC and the LGBTQI community; without the passion and joy I derive from this scene, i dont think i’d be here today.  I could go on and on but instead I am going to present you this Mix with a promise to always do my absolute best to uphold these cultures and territories that I am a guest of. I will do better, I will do more.

This Mix is an attempt to curate a very specific musical setting, one that those of us who stay up all night miss more than many things during this complex time; the SUNRISE set!

My interpretation of this is expressed in 4 parts: Dark, Dawn, Sunrise and Morning. To achieve this i have been slowly compiling crates of music that just simply fit, which was an intentionally slow process done over the past year. I intend to do this for every summer.

Dark: 140 bpm deep and heavy, for that last taste of darkness vibe
Dawn: 125 bpm soulful beats and grime, flexin’ the wonky stuff when the light begins to change
Sunrise:  102 bpm Dancehall flavor, homies everywhere feelin’ fly
Morning:  80 bpm Contemporary Hip Hop , Gettin’ it (before bed)
                116 bpm Finale; Sway and Vibe, BIG feelings; slow mixing
