Brazilian DJ, vinyl digger, party starter, and style icon Martha Pinel has officially joined the Toy Tonics family. Splitting her time between Rio de Janeiro and Berlin, she’s the founder of Assembleia, a laid-back Rio party that’s become a Carnival sensation, and co-founder of Croma, a music-meets-fashion project that shaped Rio’s alt-scene. Featured on the cover of GQ Brazil, she was named one of “13 artists changing the world.”
Her non-linear DJ sets fuse Afro-Brazilian rhythms, Middle Eastern grooves, Italo, disco, house, and Balearic sounds - always bold, emotional, and unpredictable. She’s played Boiler Room, Paris Fashion Week, KALA Festival, DGTL, and more, alongside names like Hunee, Antal, and Prins Thomas.
Martha’s debut EP Real Rio captures a rediscovery of her hometown—a city where beauty and chaos collide in dramatic highs and lows. Transcend into orbit with Uritorco Times. (Probably) an ode to Argentina’s most mystical peak, UFO synthesisers flash and bleep around a wonky bassline. The result is equal parts mystic ritual and late night mischief.

Sly yet crunchy Push Comes To Shove rides a killer bassline over off kilter percussion. Sleazy mechanical funk that teeters, entranced between tension and release.

Sonic Witchcraft ensues in Junk Be Gone as the shadowy yet playful bassline twists like smoke around the acid melody summoning rhythm from strangeness.

Junk Be Gone gets the Felix Dickinson treatment for the EP’s remix delivering an extra long rework that stays respectfully true to the original in all the right ways. Live acid bass envelops the original bassline whilst ever intensifying synth solos build to an Eastern flavoured crescendo.

LOOM #13 — Procedural Fiction is an ambient sound installation and conceptual album derived from twelve abstract instructions. The work explores the paradox of creation — the tension between rule-bound systems and imaginative freedom.

The sonic and visual elements were co-created using generative AI platforms, treating the instructions as algorithmic procedure to produce a digital fiction. Each track is a sonic rendering of an imperative, utilizing minimalist electronic soundscapes, rhythmic ambiguity, and expansive drones to translate complex ideas into atmospheric form.

The music is a constructed void, designed to be unsettling yet contemplative, inviting the listener to find personal meaning within its austere, fabricated structure.

Aibana (Constellation)

According with the mythology of Agharo, the spirit of every being lives in the stars. And so when the body dies, the spirit returns to the stars where it belongs. The soul is then the constellation formed by the stars every being has.

This structure of constellation, however, isn’t two-dimensional as in western astronomy; in Aibana each star is intimately connected with every other star within the constellation and within them runs the will of the spirit and its fate. The stronger the structure of Aibana, the stronger the spirit.

These cards speak of the individual — of our self in relation with the self. Or our spirit and our soul. Of that which is behind all masks, our true self and our true fears. How did the meaning of the tarot card inspire the journey of this mix?

I was appealed by the ‘confidence’ aspect of it.
I really played the tracks I wanted to hear myself without thinking about anything else. Sometimes you might overthink a mix - especially one recorded at home one. But in this case I really went with the flow and eveything seems ‘fated’ to happen this way.

We’ve been rummaging through old hard drives and found a few unreleased tracks, including one that was originally available on Juno Download. 2011 was a productive year for In Flagranti, and these two tracks have aged remarkably well.

@secretsundaze joins the Helsinki based Echocentric family for their 20th edition by way of the ‘Flashlight’ EP. A break-neck fusion of the eclectic influences, from UK breakbeat hardcore to Italian progressive house, amassed from the career of the storied London based DJ, producer and curator.

The A-side opens with ‘Flashlight’ (Stripped) with clear intent. The track stylistically distills the previously stated influences combining Blues Party toasting and ethereal female vocals, underpinned by an incessant bass and driving breakbeats. ‘Flashlight’ (OG) leans more into the dramatic, layering striking stabs atop the already peaktime ready (Stripped) incarnation. Hotly-tipped emerging producer ODF @o-d-f contributes a remix that reimagines ‘Flashlight’ for sweaty basements, fusing rugged bass with precision-engineered club dynamics in his trademark tech-garage style.

On the flip we have ‘Style’. Using some of the same raw materials as ‘Flashlight’, ‘Style’ takes those elements and recontextualises them with a more refrained approach. Breaks still drive the track, but added into the mix are a Roland JV1080 guitar, soaring keys, an organ groove, heavy bass and niggly acid line. The impressive EP is complete with ‘Style’ (VIP) which edges the balearic tip one notch up with an extended keys solo for those daring eyes-closed, end-of-night moments.

The EP as a whole is an ode to the renowned Blues Dances of the 1980s, with the vocal samples coming from rare on-location party recordings from these illusive days. The influence of these Black British sound-system led parties on UK dance music culture is only starting to get fully recognised, playing an equal part in the development of dance music as the fabled trip to Ibiza in 1987. This is thoroughly argued and documented by Ed Gillet in his thrilling ‘Party Lines’ book, a must for anyone concerned with the roots of the music we love.

The duo has always made a great case demonstrating how “inspiration” from the creative works of others can truly be made into something new and totally distinct from the source material.  But whether you know the source material bears major influence on what their interpretation is going to even sound like to you.  In other words, you could be hearing the same song as another listener is, but if you’re familiar with the source material, you’re going to also be hearing that, while someone who isn’t familiar with it won’t.  Most of their listeners have no idea this is even going on, or could even be allowed.
I figure I follow In Flagranti quite closely, but I only make a connection here, or a connection there.  Sometimes this happens immediately, other times it’s taken years to notice.  Most connections I will never even be aware of, and I don’t listen for them, they just stand out to me or they don’t.  Sometimes I only discover the source material long after I’ve been familar with In Flagranti’s take on it, which you’d think would detract from the latter, but for me, it only adds to it.  In Flagranti’s musical interpretations show a certain ethic and a philosophy that parallels their approach to visual content.  It’s so “meta” that I’m at a loss to describe it, except to say what I often do:  Warhol would be In Flagranti’s biggest fan if he was around to witness them. – truckerdisco.wordpress.com

Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is nonexistent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery—celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from—it’s where you take them to.”
