Summer may be over but you can keep the vibes alive with this new package from Hell Yeah. It revisits Max Essa's 'The Great Adventure' and serves it up with a couple of fresh remixes from the man of the moment My Friend Dario and a rare appearance from Balearic Gabba Sound System.

Back in 2020, 'The Great Adventure' was the name of an album that collected together all of Essa's tunes on this label, as well as being a single itself. It is a signature sound from the Balearic boss with tropical drum sounds and organic percussion. Airy drums ride on blissful waves with cosmic synths soundtracking the moment that afternoon turns to evening and the dance floor begins to fill up.

Next comes My Friend Dario, who is at the heart of the Balearic new wave thanks to his fresh takes on Nu Northern Soul and his upcoming album on Hell Yeah. He speeds things up and brings warm house grooves underneath the lush and expansive synths. It's a real bubbler with triumphant leads and plenty of Mediterranean magic.

Finally come the in-house Balearic Gabba Sound System crew to bring their fusion of Italo, acid, downtempo, disco and proto-house. It makes for a track of subtle euphoric intensity, always on the rise, powered by loose drum tumbles, snaking acid lines and awash with a rush of melodic joy.

This is a versatile package that offers plenty of different and equally delicious Balearic perspectives.

Lazily, the tide rolls back in, caressing the shore in a single, sonorous manoeuvre. Leeds-based house producer Lone Saxon drops anchor for the first Balearic Ensemble outing of 2023, bringing shipmates Running Hot, Orchid and DJ Phidas along for some extra sea-salt remix action. Get it on…
‘Raised By The Island’ is a deeply expressive ode to the rhythms of flora & fauna, underpinned by Lone Saxon’s unique spin on the balearic beat. A medley of imaginative melodies and percussive flourishes, skilfully padded with rousing vocal samples and bass pulled from deep down low. This is certified balearic hardware; we’re loving it, you will too.
Next up Running Hot steps things up a notch, kicking and convulsing into harder territories with a massive balearic breakbeat remix wrapped around a 90s prog vocal sample. His remix goes hard on percussion, pads and carbonated b-lines, reconceiving Lone Saxon’s island anthem into late night, hands-in-the-air tackle. HUGE summer tip (viva the balearic breakbeat)!
Next up is Moscow’s edit king Orchid, who delivers an inside-out rework where acid bass snakes through the gaps left between jaunty pad stabs and spirited snare cadences. It’s a letter from a faraway place, with tales of strange beasts and creatures; a place of endless summer from where you won’t want to leave.
Finally, Klasse Wreck’s DJ Phidas takes the helm, rounding off the EP with a suave, percussion-based reimagining of Lone Saxon’s balearic sensation. The Barcelona-via-Venezuela producer’s version chugs along, eclectic and unhurried, armed with space controller gurgles, polyrhythms and pitch-stretched drum samples for a carefully constructed dancefloor warm-up. Class action by Phidias to round off what might be our favourite package yet.

Descending arps trickle into 'Tornerò' from the get-go. Vocoded vocals flutter through the masterful mix, weaving into inviting synth swells. Defined drums are firmly felt across this record.

‘Non Ce L’Hai Solo Tu' is a Detroit-infused, fierce floor filler. Layering vocoder motifs with crisp synth stabs make for many a euphoric payoff. The intelligent entwining of electro, early Detroit house and Ma Spaventi’s effortless earworms are plentiful. His gift for haunting, strong melodic intonation is prevalent in ‘Costa Brava.’ A grounded, growling bassline rasps throughout the track, reeling you further and further into this whirlpool of brilliance.

‘Tornerò Reprise’ closes this magnificent EP beautifully. Whispering vocal lines are hauntingly blended with synthesiser noise, keeping in line with the swells across the record and resolving the first edition of ‘Tornerò’ with a more acidic conclusion.

The bubbles were hypnotic and mesmerising as they flew through the air towards the ocean. They drifted atop the breeze out to sea before popping and becoming one with the air around them. 

This place was some kind of magic, sun kissed and decadent. He strolled alongside the pool, gazing out at the mythical view which lay before him. It was hard to believe that this time last week he was at home, lost in the midst of the city. 

Out here there were better things. Love, sun, dub and an energy which would keep him fulfilled for a lifetime if only he could. 

As the sun began to set in the distance he took in a deep breath, bracing himself for the night to come...

Belgian producer, DJ and FCL member Red D has announced a new remix EP dubbed ‘Re-Fantasized & Realized’ featuring tracks from his 2022 album. He has invited a stellar cast of friends and producers to remix his work including the likes of Charles Webster, Kai Alice and Far Out Radio Systems. 

It is however the San Soda remix which we bring to you today, a wonderful deep cut set to cause mischief on the dancefloor.

The Imaginarium is a unique pearl gleaming within the beautiful galaxy of Lithuanian festivals. Super small in size, yet abundant in beauty of all kinds, the festival is – first and foremost – about the joy of the creation process. This is an essential aspect of human growth that is often overlooked during modern-day events.

Pretty Much tribe nurtures a culture of support, mutual creation, and skill-sharing. With every third person of the collective having learned how to use the DJ decks, it was only natural to take a step forward into music production. This is how five producers were paired with six beginners to go on a unique musical journey together for this compilation of six tracks. Each of them explores the idea of connectedness because the main theme of The Imaginarium VII was about transforming aloneness into oneness.

We believe that genuine and meaningful connections are what every human being truly seeks. The question then is: what if some of the energy put into hyping up people with big names was redirected into fostering co-creation? How much is it possible for a person to open up due to the environment?

To answer this, Pretty Much tribe has built a utopian village that values sharing over commerce. A space where every individual can bask in the sun of imagination by playing an important part in the collective. Gain a glimpse into The Imaginarium VII by immersing yourself in this idealistic compilation.

We are proud to present the first EP from Maracuja, a trio composed of Stephane Lefrancois, Sarkis Ricci and Elle Holgate who together have created an infectious and joyful blend of afro - beat, funk and jazz.
Stephane's blend of live percussion and electronic grooves are the perfect playground for Sarkis' bouncy bass lines, catchy hooks, and soloing escapades on the keys, finished off by Elle's intriguing and ethereal vocal poems. A musical tapestry of cinematic story-telling, Balearic lullabies, and sunshine-soaked jazzy landscapes.
Maracuja open the dance with Re-Percussions, a groovy instrumental with an uplifting vibe, the ideal appetizer for the following courses, a little warmup, if you will.
The title track, Portrait of a Soul on Fire, is a mesmerizing piece of lyricism. Afro drums, a growly bass line, and hauntingly sparse chords leave plenty of space for Elle to paint a picture of the archetypal artist’s journey; a combination of inspiration, bliss, blood sweat and tears, where colour, intertextuality and passion collide. Between spoken word and singing, she weaves her beguiling spell paying homage to the greats that came before.
With Chanel Blues, Maracuja pick up the pace and energy. The drums are frantic, jumpy, ever - driving. Sarkis' guitars, keyboards and bass provide an inspiring backdrop for an age-old tale of material possession at the expense of depth.
Bassoon goes back to a chilled out afro beat groove with a meandering bass line, rhodes and layers of floaty synths, punctuated by Sarkis' wurlitzer outbursts woven into melodic vocal hooks and a lighthearted ocean-view worthy poolside soundtrack.
The closing track, Goddess, is an ode to femininity in its all-encompassing creative and fertile energy. The decidedly afro-beat tinged drums and bass offer a solid foundation for Sarkis' beautiful theme and mischievous jazzy solos. Elle's tribute to feminine energy is heavily flavoured with inspiration for one of her favourite female artists; the unparalleled poetry of Ursula Rucker.
Maracuja are also lucky enough to be surrounded by many inspiring musicians, who offered their talents for remixing.
Rhythms of Prescott's rework of Bassoon is a floor filling, groovy, chunky monster of a track. The triplet, shuffle drum groove relentlessly drives the energy, while swirling pads, vocal cuts and chords turn this piece into a memorable party starter.
Rise Ashen's rub of Chanel Blues is a masterpiece of deconstructed revisiting. With his signature, driving grooves and arrangement, Rise completely flips the original version around, playfully highlighting Elle's and Sarkis' vocals, creating a captivating journey through some of the original's more hidden elements.
Finally, Gregorio's interpretation of Portrait of a Soul on Fire offers a balmy, ambient infused closure to the EP, jazzy hooks lulling the listener into an introspective, emotional finish. Floaty piano lines, upright bass and soft, surging pads create the ideal backdrop to showcase Elle's lyrics. There was no better way to close the curtain, for now, on this Maracuja feast.

The duo has always made a great case demonstrating how “inspiration” from the creative works of others can truly be made into something new and totally distinct from the source material.  But whether you know the source material bears major influence on what their interpretation is going to even sound like to you.  In other words, you could be hearing the same song as another listener is, but if you’re familiar with the source material, you’re going to also be hearing that, while someone who isn’t familiar with it won’t.  Most of their listeners have no idea this is even going on, or could even be allowed.
I figure I follow In Flagranti quite closely, but I only make a connection here, or a connection there.  Sometimes this happens immediately, other times it’s taken years to notice.  Most connections I will never even be aware of, and I don’t listen for them, they just stand out to me or they don’t.  Sometimes I only discover the source material long after I’ve been familar with In Flagranti’s take on it, which you’d think would detract from the latter, but for me, it only adds to it.  In Flagranti’s musical interpretations show a certain ethic and a philosophy that parallels their approach to visual content.  It’s so “meta” that I’m at a loss to describe it, except to say what I often do:  Warhol would be In Flagranti’s biggest fan if he was around to witness them. – truckerdisco.wordpress.com

Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is nonexistent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery—celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from—it’s where you take them to.”
