Long time colleagues David Sumner (aka Function) and Ed Davenport (aka Inland) have teamed up to relaunch Sumner's esteemed imprint, Infrastructure. The label has been lying dormant since 2006 when Sumner focused his energies on Sandwell District and relocated to Berlin in 2007. They kick things off with a collaboration under the guise Function/Inland with this new EP, Odeon/Rhyl.

The A side, based on Photek's beatless 'Under The Palms' and released with his blessing, 'Odeon' translates a soaring, epic synth solo into an 8 minute percussion-driven version. Modulating toms rise and fall as the strings climb to new heights, resulting in a sparse and haunting moment of oblivion.

On the B side the pair work with solely original elements in 'Rhyl'. Deeply influenced by the heady days of early Warp, Skam, Autechre and pure electronica, they add a contemporary, hi-tech twist and hints of Sandwell's emotive textures. It's a stark reminder of the power of only a few strong elements, arranged by experienced hands.

First recorded and edited while Sumner and Davenport were sharing the same address in 2011, the pair shelved the material, letting it ferment for two years before the right moment arose to review the tracks and do the final mixdowns for this beautiful EP.

Jaunt celebrates a decade in the game this year, with the British clubbing institution marking the milestone in typically esteemed fashion. 10 Years of Jaunt - Sea, Land, Air is a 12 track V/A compilation spread across three distinct vinyl discs, each of which is based around some of the world's core elements; themselves a mode of transport or a manner to embark on a 'jaunt'. Each featured artist is somebody who the label has forged a connection with at some stage during their ten year journey - and each track has been titled to the artist's own interpretation of a 'jaunt'. The tracklisting itself has been tailor made to build and develop like their a Jaunt event, with deep, hypnotic, up tempo strands included alongside numerous surprises along the way.

Longtime resident of the label Stefan Vincent offers up Dynamic Reflection’s 37th vinyl, a four tracker consisting of three distinct original mixes from Stefan’s own hands and a remix by the fellow Dutchmen Artefakt. 

For everyone who has heard of Stefan Vincent and his music before, it’s no secret that he favors the use of melody and melancholy to bring purport to his tracks and The Spaces Between Time is no exception. While peculiar parts of sound design do their job by keeping things in motion at all times, lush pads find their counterpart in the familiar sounds of vintage drum machines that lay the foundation of these contemporary pieces of techno.

Add to that a very dreamy yet effective remix by Artefakt on the A2 and the tone is undeniably set. DREF037 is the kind of patiently evolving and expanding techno that crowds just will not get enough of, guaranteed.

The Spaces Between Time

Stefan Vincent - Synesthesia

Oliver Deutschmann, who operates the Berlin-based Vidab label along with Stephan Hill, specializes in what he calls “timeless” club music – while it’s a term that initially seems like it could apply to anything and everything, a quick survey of Deutschmann’s work makes it readily apparent what he means. His hard-edged beats, insistent tones, and occasional flash of devious humor make Deutschmann a natural addition to the Mote Evolver roster: his natural versatility and clear-minded futurism result in compelling club tracks and DJ nights, and his Mote Evolver debut EP Lost In A  Loop is no exception to this rule. With just a simple schematic to work with, Deutschmann does what the best producers do and enlivens those simple instructions until they give an illusion of greater complexity.

Deutschmann’s deft usage of split-second samples on the opening track “Seduced” turns a distant, repeated murmur of the track title into an inescapable command, while a dense undergrowth of acid bassline makes it clear there’s no turning back. The interlude “Apsurt” follows with lofty, faintly ominous synth pads providing the backing to a glass elevator ride to the top of a skyscraper utopia, all while a reassuring monologue on neurology points towards a future of human connectivity. The tension between the dark-tinted instrumentation and these utopian pronouncements is a classic techno trope that Duetschmann employs to great effect.

On the b-side, “Survive” plays out very much like the more intense and anxious twin of “Seduced,” again relying on the repeitition of a single reverberating word to set the tone, while the hammering drum patterns fill in the details. The closer “Lost” dispenses with the vocalisations completely and lets the steaming mechanical processes take center stage: the stripped-down symbiosis of body and brain that this track achieves is very rperesnetative of Deutschmann’s work overall.

MOTE052 :: Oliver Deutschmann – Lost In A Loop EP

Tresor Records are pleased to present S_W_Z_K, the new project from David Brown aka Swayzak. Whilst the name remains identifiable, S_W_Z_K presents a clear departure from his work with James Taylor who recently left the legendary production duo. Taking cues from the outfit’s heavier live material, Brown — with the sporadic help of long time collaborator and friend Richard Davis — steers S_W_Z_K into deep and spacious techno on this eponymous debut album.

	Before taking different paths in July last year, Taylor and Brown had been producing together since 1997. A union that spawned five studio albums, two high profile DJ comps and stack of genre-spanning EPs, Swayzak became one of the leading figures of !K7 Records, as well as appearing on labels like Force Tracks, M_nus and of course, their own Swayzak Recordings and 240 Volts. But it’s their legacy as a formidable live act that lays the groundwork for Brown’s new direction as S_W_Z_K, turning the pair's chaotic, experimental and textural live aesthetic into a recorded signature that’s energetic, raw and unrestrained.

“The project was to make sonically powerful music that would work in clubs without necessarily making "club music". The tracks are very minimal in the sense that no more than ten sounds were used, giving each track space to breathe.” comments Brown.

	S_W_Z_K is an Intelligent Dance album with Berlin sensibilities. It balances the more pensive, introverted Warp moments like “Elsenstr. 171” and progressive closer “End of the Line Old Boy” with plenty of floor friendly cuts. From the shimmering Basic Channel-hailing opener “31 Techniques” the album plunges into steelier, hydraulic recesses with “Dimanche Noir” before Artificial Intelligence and the Tresor basement collide in “Neukölln Mon Amour”. The remainder of the album continues to reinvent itself, working over a restricted sound pallet and yet culminating in a diverse, rich and intriguing long player. 

S_W_Z_K deftly showcases Brown’s 20 years of electronic craftsmanship, with tracks like the morphing “Marianne F” and multi-tiered “The Last Drop” flaunting a particularly inventive approach to sound design. It’s a stunning juncture in an already prolific and venerable career, and one Tresor Records look forward to fostering in the future.
