Barnt is a producer and a DJ who is hard to place – one minute he’s making avant garde, experimental sounds on his co founded label Magazine, the next he’s making peak time trance on Kompakt. Perhaps this is what makes him so exciting, you never quite know what you are going to get.

Earlier this year Kompakt announced the release of a superb EP which had already been heard doing the rounds in the clubs, a big room trance inspired club track which had been destroying dancefloors all over. Of course it was Barnt.

The release was his first new material for several years, the pandemic has offered Barnt the time to reflect on his own direction and from the sounds of it left him longing for the nostalgia and big room sounds he grew up on in the 90’s.

The EP comes off the back of recent releases on the likes of Mule Musiq, Comeme, Hinge Finger and Holgen. However, it made perfect sense that his latest should feature on none other than the German powerhouse that is Kompakt.

We were delighted when Barnt agreed to record this mix for us, as one of our own personal favourites we can’t help but think that he’s done a wicked job.

Dans ce studio transitoire, orienté vers des univers phoniques non-dansants, nous recevrons sur six dates invité.e.s et résident.e.s pour des sessions exploratoires à écouter assis.

La Méridienne entend mêler, quelques après-midi durant, lumière zénithale et poésie sonore. Les sélections de nos convives, ouvertes au public, seront retransmises en direct sur nos ondes depuis les toits puis disponibles à la réécoute. Amateurs et amatrices d’ambiances lancinantes et de rythmes voluptueux, la Méridienne s’ouvre au grand jour le 3 juillet.

[EN] Radio Sofa sets its Méridienne on the roof of the Point Ephémère for a summer radio residency. In this transitory studio, oriented towards non-dancing phonic universes, we will receive guests and residents for exploratory sessions to be listened to sitting down.

La Méridienne intends to mix zenithal light and sonic poetry for a few afternoons. The selections of our guests will be open to public and broadcast live on our airwaves from the rooftop. Lovers of haunting atmospheres and voluptuous rhythms, La Méridienne opens on the 3d of July.

Ata Subculture Mix [Recorded Live at Robert Johnson 7/11/15]

Norwegian Charlotte Bendiks came up on the famous Tromsø techno sound of her homeland. It means her music is mystical, frosty and metallic, which made it perfectly at home on the Cómeme label where she released her first EP. She has also had outings on Love OD Communications and throws her own parties back home, all while serving up off kilter DJ sets informed by growing up in an isolated and lonely arctic town. That lends them a sense of escapism, fantasy and story telling that when married to her so called “body music” style, make them utterly compelling. 

Over the course of ninety minutes, she segues through hallucinogenic synth tracks, loosely jumbled percussion and acid flecked slow motion house that will jerk you into action. It’s a playful and intoxicating mix that will warm you through on a chilly evening and conjures party vibes in brilliantly off kilter and unusual ways. On this evidence, it looks like 2018 could well be her year.
