Featuring field recordings from the Australian bush alongside synths, vocals and binaural beats, Wylah is a deeply emotive piece, inspired by the devastating bushfires that are sweeping across the country.  

“This piece came from a conversation I had with a Wylah (Yellow-tailed Black Cocktatoo) one afternoon in the forest. I had been hunting sounds all morning and was losing hope of getting anything worthwhile, so I was packing up to go home. I had almost reached the car park when two Wylahs appeared from nowhere and began chatting with me from the branches above. It was quite magical. I can’t explain how or why but I just knew they were talking to me. Asking me to record them and share their message.”

In Aboriginal tradition, the Black Cockatoo has a significant place. It is a beautiful, graceful bird with an unmistakable but somewhat mournful call. They represent change and enlightenment and herald the coming of rain. They are also believed to be the guides and guardians of the spirits of loved ones on their journey to rest amongst the Ancestors. (source: http://www.ngaoara.org.au/story)

Achingly beautiful, yet subtle, this song represents the ending. Mother nature’s mournful cry. The devastation. And the empty silence at the end.

August is the latest release from IKSRE (I Keep Seeing Rainbows Everywhere) – aka Naarm/Melbourne-based multi instrumentalist and producer, Phoebe Dubar. Cinematic and expansive, August is a deeply meditative yet uplifting work featuring lush synths,  layered vocals, binaural beats and field recordings of Melbourne’s winter wildlife. 

“I wrote this in August last year. It’s the end of winter in Melbourne, the coldest month before spring. It’s when everyone escapes to warmer climes. But as ugly and dark as it is, I see the beauty in it too. It’s like the darkest hour before the dawn, or empty lungs before the inhale breath. Just when you think things can't get any darker or emptier, then you see a glimmer of sunshine and everything turns around. Things get better.”

August is like a breath, rising and falling, from the depths to the heights, from darkness to light. From the deep, swirling synths to the etherial vocals that lilt and rise above it, it is somehow dark and constrictive and yet fluid and free.

 “I planned on releasing this song earlier in the year but held it back in favour of writing Wylah, my hymn to the Bushfires. How could I ever have predicted that the crisis we faced as Australians would be engulfed by the crisis faced by all of humanity, only two months later. But I feel this song is so perfectly timed to be released now. We’re in the dark now. Our lungs and hearts feel empty. But if we look at the clear, blue skies above, hear the birds and the quiet streets below, and learn to appreciate this new, slower pace of life, then maybe we can see that glimmer of sunshine ahead.”

‘My Cauliflower Ears’ is the third album from Netherlands-born, Benjamin van Vliet, who makes music under the name, Microwolf.  

‘My Cauliflower Ears’ combines the sonically rich, yet minimal approach of drone music, the sampling techniques of hip hop, and the intimacy of folk-styled songwriting and storytelling. It’s the kind of honest, personal, and roughhewn sort of sound that has inspired Lost Tribe Sound since our beginning in 2010. This type of hard-to-frame vocal music has always been important to us, and helped us convert some of the most diehard instrumental music fans, into fans of vocal-lead music such as this. Music where the vocal truly plays the role of an instrument, just as much as anything else in the song. Microwolf is very much in line with other acts that we’ve championed over the years, such as Mute Forest, Cock & Swan and Graveyard Tapes.

Before Van Vliet started Microwolf, he’d always made music that was a compromise. Making music with others he’d naturally strive for democracy. So the outcome would always be a mix of ideas, wherein his more outlandish ideas would usually get tossed in the process. Microwolf was designed to be an outlet for those things Van Vliet knew he’d have to do himself to get them right.

Having never fully taken the creative reins before, the first two Microwolf albums ('You Better Go Now' and the mini-album 'You Are The Everything') were a huge learning curve. 'You Better Go Now' is sonically all over the place and absolutely stuffed with ideas. That album could have been the beginning and the end of Microwolf, but about two years later Van Vliet realized he had at least one more solo album in him. After taking a refugee vow with a Buddhist lama in 2018 and diving deeper into drone music and contemporary classical music, Van Vliet set out to make a statement that was far more subtle and better articulated. An album that was short, quiet, conceptually precise, but executed loosely and freely. No tight rhythms, no strummed guitars, no loud singing. Music that embraces its own emptiness, awkwardness and fleetingness.
