A real banger of a mix this week from our friend @symplectic !

Simon is one of those heads who is always finding big new ways to contribute to the scene. Infamous for his high-bpm, quick cuttin' DJ sets, he's also co-founder/resident of the Toulouse-based @moontripasso and co-founder/co-owner for @vaguesrecords.

Quelle forme d'art, autre que la musique, apprécies-tu spécialement ?

Je m'intéresse beaucoup au cinéma et pendant cette dernière année à la maison j’ai pu bien investir le domaine… Mes films préférés étant bien évidemment les deux OSS117. Sinon en fonction de l’humeur je peux regarder de tous les styles même si j’ai quand même un faible pour les scénario inspirés de faits réels. La plus grosse claque récente que j’ai prise étant sur la mini série “When they see us” (“Dans leur regard”) qui raconte (l’histoire vraie) d’une enquête montée de toute pièce accusant délibérement à tort 5 ados noirs d’Harlem pour viol.

Hormis la musique pour danser, vers quels albums, artistes ou styles gravites-tu ?

Depuis l'adolescence, je suis passionné de rap francais. Contrairement à la musique électronique j’écoute très rarement du rap pour "m'ambiancer". Je suis très tourné vers ce qu’on appelle le “rap conscient". Ça peut être du rap avec un engagement politique/social comme on retrouve dans les textes de La Canaille, Medine, Vin’s; ou des textes sombres qui racontent le mal de vivre, comme Furax, Dooz Kawa ou pour moi un des meilleurs niveau écriture, Lucio Bukowski. 

Que tentes-tu de communiquer lorsque tu joues ou produis ta musique ? 

Lorsque j’ai commencé à mixer et que j’ai monté mon asso Moontrip à Toulouse (France), j’ai pris l’habitude de faire les closing des soirées qu’on organisait. En général c’était des sets d’une heure, la dernière heure où on donne tout. Le but étant de clôturer sur un set énervé où tout le monde se déchaîne avant la fin de la soirée (ou le début de l’after). J’aime particulièrement ce genre de set :) 

Décris-nous le DJ booth ou le scénario d'une performance idéale selon toi. 

Une des performances que je rêverai de voir c’est [KRTM] vs Twan en hybrid set !

Inner Circle are proud to present our new project CIRCLECAST. 

CIRCLECAST is a series of recordings from friends, artists, DJs, and performers from our surrounding community, intended to inspire connection and memories for the raves that we were able to host and attend regularly before this year. Our plan is to have a mix series, guest interviews, livestreams, and more.  

For our first instalment to welcome in the 2021 new year, we bring you this slammin' techno journey from Montreal DJ-producer s.talbot (@d_nrgy).

Like our live events, which seek to represent the diversity happening in today's underground dance music, our mix series is separated by the names of the events we would host pre-covid, with different genres and styles represented in each one. This mix falls under RIFT, our more techno / industrial-focused offering. 

We'll be posting mixes once to twice a month, usually with a mini interview (French, English, Bilingual) exploring the creative mind of the featured artist. Big thank you to s.talbot for letting us into his world -- have a look below!

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺(𝘀) 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆 𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰?

𝗛𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗮 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿, 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗯𝘂𝗺𝘀, 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀-𝘁𝘂 ?

J’ai eu la chance de découvrir la techno et l’ambient au cours de raves – ce qui m’a vraiment inculqué que les deux styles, ambient et techno, existent sur 2 faces distinctes d’une même dimension. L’intensité de leurs énergies sont extrêmement rapprochées, et partagent des destinations semblables, pour moi. 

Dans ce sens, je suis extrêmement attiré par la discographie de zoviet-france, groupe proto- ambient des années 80/90. Une musique faite maison, non-linéaire, qui représente l’expérience d’un moment - difficilement descriptible.

Most of the dance tracks I play, I have listened to over and over again alone - which often has the effect of transporting my mind to a strobe flashing, time deprived space of uninterrupted dance. And when I get that feeling, it’s usually a good sign that it’s the kind of track I’ll want to share. This feeling usually revolves around perceptions of freedom and connection with the people around me.

𝗗é𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘀-𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝗝 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗰é𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼 𝗱'𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗱é𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝗶.

Je pense que la disposition idéale se situe dans le retrait de la présence visuelle de la personne performante (sauf si cette présence est artistiquement requise). Un arrangement qui permet une meilleure concentration (ou une absence de déconcentration) relative à la source physique du son. Ça, je pense, c’est une manière de tirer le maximum de l’expérience. Je le perçois d’une manière similaire à éteindre un écran pour écouter une production. En enlevant le support visuel, on active des capacités auditives sur lesquelles on ne peut pas se concentrer lorsque nos yeux sont occupés à surveiller la source superficielle du son. Sans cette déconcentration, l’esprit est plus libre pour comprendre, cerner, aller plus loin dans ce qui est audible. On se perd moins dans des détails qui ne comptent pas, ultimement.

For our sixth installment of Circlecast, Berlin-based @isolatedmaterial hits us with this absolute slammer of a mix. Overflowing with phat breaks and heavy electro artillery, it's a fast-paced rocket-fueled journey from start to finish.

Besides music I'm mostly into visual arts like photography, collages or generative art.

One artist that I really like is the experimental filmmaker Pedro Maia, who really pushes the boundaries of medium, particularly in his use of analog film.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐛𝐮𝐦, 𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭, 𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜?

Lately I've been really enjoying Sway EP by YSI.  It's a 4 tracker that spans across multiple moods and genres (ambient, indie rock, EBM...) but still feels very coherent as a whole. The production work on it is amazing, I especially love the processing on the different guitar parts in the title track. 

𝐈𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐧𝐝/𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬?

Generally when it comes to production, I try to make a point of not overthinking every step I take in order to avoid over-producing something, although this is something I still struggle with a bit.

I take a slighly different approach when it comes to DJing however, where I really try to "narrate a story" for the listener. When building a tracklist, I try to make sure the set has various sections with different moods, genres or BPMs which I then assemble together in a way that hopefully doesn't feel too contrived.

𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐃𝐉 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐡 (𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐮𝐩), 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭.

I like to be able to play both digital and vinyl in a set, so I guess having 2 CDJs as well as 2 turntables would be ideal (or just 2 turntables with time-coded vinyls, which is what I have at home). Mixer wise, I prefer to keep it fairly straight forward - a 2-channel mixer with EQ and filter is definitely enough for me.

I think it's important to be able to make the most of what I have available, and I find that a simple setup like this really forces me to get creative. That being said, I'd love to experiment in the future with more with effects and maybe 3 deck mixing.

Hard to say given all the amazing stuff I discovered during the lockdown, but I would have to go with Never Crash by Maelstrom.
