Dead Can Dance formed in Melbourne, Australia, in August 1981 with Paul Erikson on bass guitar, Lisa Gerrard (ex-Microfilm) on vocals, Simon Monroe (Marching Girls) on drums and Brendan Perry (Marching Girls) on vocals and guitar. Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry were also a domestic couple and they left Monroe in Australia when they and Paul Erikson moved to London in May 1982, where they signed with alternative rock label 4AD Records. With the duo, the initial United Kingdom line-up were James Pinker, Paul Erikson and Peter Ulrich.

'Parc Naturel pour Synthétiseurs' was composed and recorded using self-sustained energy with my modular synthesizers in Auvergne, France, as part of a residency called "Le Récit du Silence" (The Tale of Silence), centered around autonomous in situ performances. During this time of creation, I used batteries and solar panels to power the entire small studio that I had installed to be able to play in open nature.

This project is the most ambitious endeavor I have undertaken so far. It aims to take the audience on an auditory journey through diverse microcosms, resembling a real natural park. For this project, I used my modular synthesizer that I was able to take everywhere.

Composing with nature is not such an easy thing, as you have to learn to let go. In times of capitalist anxiety, the mere search for calm becomes difficult. And when we finally find it, we already think about finding it again.

In these places, the natural and ephemeral orchestra is alive. It can invite us to compose with it.

I seek to bear witness to these moments to offer the world these new imaginations. And there are these moments, at the bend of a mountain contour where the music comes to life and offers us a "natural park of sounds". - TL

Dead Can Dance have announced details of the release of a new single, Opium, through [PIAS] Recordings on 29th October 2012.

The single is taken from their recently released album, Anastasis, which came out in August. The album was their first since 1996’s Spiritchaser. 

The band also recently announced an extensive European tour, including a show at London’s Royal Albert Hall, tickets for which sold-out within 48 hours of going onsale.

Signed by 4AD and releasing their first album in 1984, the duo drew rapturous reviews for albums that spanned neo-classical and folk across time and geography, each album selling to a progressively larger audience, the emotional drama of their coming to the attention of the San Francisco ballet, Hermes Perfume and a documentary on Hitler and Stalin; likewise motion pictures such as Heat, The Crossing Guard and Baraka. Gerrard developed her own solo film soundtracks - The Gladiator and The Insider, for example – while Perry worked on solo albums such as 1999’s ‘Eye Of the Hunter’ and 2008’s ‘Ark’.
