  The promo video made for Sunset of a Clown Volume II is the opening shot to a Godard film soundtracked by Nicolas Jaar's "Marquises." It's either the height of pretension, or pretty brilliant. That I can't work out which probably makes it the latter. Music that actually puts you in a position where you're required to think about how it makes you feel is often among the finest. "Marquises" and the tracks that surround it on this second release from Jaar's imprint aren't necessarily the greatest things in the world, but each of them occupy a space that is hard to quantify—and that's exactly the point.

  Nikita Quasim's "Framboises" is bustling with microsound while a piano plays quickly over top in a superior mood piece, while Jaar's biting of French folkie is a nice twist on the prevailing trend towards South American protest songs. (He overlays it with a lazy breakbeat rather than a pounding house beat too, which seems to fulfill his stated goal of "taking the beats even slower.") Soul Keita, meanwhile, brings the only track that veers close enough to a dance floor. It builds and it builds, as an acoustic guitar and kick drum while away as a hazy sample gradually comes into view. Typically, the climax isn't the sort of thing that will have Amnesia crowds in ecstasy, but when you're dealing with music as intimate as this, you tend to want to have it for yourself anyway.

FmSea’s Static EP is, to say the least, introspective in nature. Four tracks that tell the emotional tale of a young man’s struggles with his anxieties as he braces himself for adulthood and the end of his “teenage sense of invincibility”. In the 19 year old artist’s own words - “Static EP is a linear chronicle of my experiences since this anxiety became a part of my life.” 

As a result, the scope of sounds heard on Static EP is quite varied. With a clear penchant for UK bass and I.D.M., FmSea’s more ambient, sporadically percussed productions, deliver a truly impressive control of his creative edge - minimal and properly spaced. On the flip side, his more accessible production, Tattered Sheets (featuring live unsampled vocals from Sophie Katz), takes a lighter turn - letting go of the more experimental tendencies to create a song (rather than a production) - thoughtful, melodic and righteously executed.

You can&#8217;t hold a good thing down, and that&#8217;s exactly why the acclaimed Great Stuff Grooves series is back with another four hot slices of house and tech this month. Drawing on producers from across the world, it&#8217;s another feisty package. 

English talent Filthy Rich continues his fine run of form (see a recent contribution to Hot Creations&#8217; Hot Waves compilation) with the infectious Drop This. Drawing heavily on house heritage once again, he welds woozy organs to head-nodding skippy beats and a plump, acid house-tinged bassline. Those held string notes in the breakdown hark back to the mid-&#8216;90s, and highlight this track&#8217;s succinct blend of old and new.

Hungary&#8217;s Muzzaik were once known for their tribal and progressive grooves, but Face It is pumping straight-up house music through and through. Again, there&#8217;s a nod to a bygone era with diva vocal snippets, filtered disco loops and big cymbal hits, but it&#8217;s all brought bang up to date with their immense production prowess. The low end undulates wildly, with occasional Daft Punk-esque descending bassline fills, and the breaks build things up to giddy heights with huge snare builds and hypnotic synth motifs. A very large track indeed, and one for those who like their filtered funk with a little techy urgency.

Don&#8217;t be fooled by Deepdisco&#8217;s name - Put Your Sunglasses On is a pure twisted techno romp. A stomping, heavily-swung groove is what this track&#8217;s all about, with just a dash of tribalism thrown in. A delicate piano scale provides contrast in the breaks, while subtly growling synths and dissonant sounds do battle in the main sections. An absolute beast of a track, it combines heads-down funk with just the right amount of deft little flourishes.

Bongo Jack rounds off the package with PHNTM - the percussion he gets his name from lacing a sidewinder of a bassline and afro guitar licks. A huge disco loop is filtered into submission before finally revealing itself in glorious fashion, the urgent percussion driving things along potently. A rasping synth motif and more bongo rhythms complete the high-energy feel, with some huge builds taking the track to fever pitch.

Review  :

MCDE proudly presents the debut works of 22 year-old Canadian, Michael Gracioppo.

The label's first 10-inch is headed by My So-Called Friends-the Montrealer’s deeply personal ode to an over-indulgent past lover.
The fluid drum work and violent bass line sit alongside the words of a punkesque inspired vocal sample.
My So-Called Friends tells the story of a sincere and vulnerable young woman facing an inner battle between excessiveness
and self-restraint. “These drugs they are making me so sad I can't stop taking them.”

A2 is a testament of Gracioppo's focus on maintaining a balance between songwriting and sound design.
Sailing unpredictably back and forth in tempo, A2 has been left untitled so as not to taint the piece.

Enlisted on remix duties, the always excellent Fred P flawlessly Reshapes Gracioppo's A1 into a hymn suited for the early morning comedowns.
Fred P’s vibrant pads resonate up and down in frequency and wrap the wavering vocal in warmth and comfort.
