mandarín - Take A Trip

This mix is a 3-hour journey I created as a kind of emotional and symbolic voyage — something that moves through darkness into light, into fire, and finally into a slow and tender resolution. 
It’s divided into four acts, each rooted in a different archetype, mood, and sound world. The genres shift along the way — from dark ambient and drone, through deep dubstep, experimental 170 DnB and (dub) techno, with touches of industrial and spoken word — but the emotional progression and sudden change of the genre and pace is deliberate and carefully woven.

ACT I - This act is the fall — a confrontation with fear, grief, the subconscious, and the underworld. It's dense and shadowy, drawing from darker ambient, experimental textures, and raw elements.
It’s about our dark shadow, sitting with discomfort, loss, and the unknown — allowing yourself to be undone.

ACT II - The second act is a glimmer — the first light after darkness. A quiet sense of hope, fragility, and openness appears. Sounds become airier, lighter, more spacious. This act is the breath after grief — not joy yet, but the possibility of it.

ACT III - This is the moment of arrival — fierce love, clarity, aliveness. The music becomes warmer, more energetic, rhythmic. Dub techno pulses emerge, fierce halftime grooves, emotionally expressive melodies. This act is about empowerment, connection, and the fire of selfhood.

ACT IV - The final act is a soft landing — the high fades into reflection and wisdom. It’s melancholic, spacious, and wise. The energy slows but doesn't vanish; it lingers like embers. Spoken word weaves through some of this, offering final thoughts, memory, and insight.
It’s the echo of the journey — not an end, but a return.

The mix is meant to be a whole journey — emotional, symbolic, and immersive — and I’d love for it to be felt that way rather than deconstructed by breaking apart the tracklist.



Take A Trip with mandarín

Fresh off the release of his outstanding album ‘Berlin’ we welcome Felix K - a true purveyor of sophisticated, deep electronic music. His work explores the fringes of techno, jungle, dub, and ambient, building immersive sound worlds that defy easy categorization. Known for his meticulous approach to production and his ability to weave complex narratives through sound, Felix K has carved out a unique space for himself in the global underground scene.

For this marathon journey, Felix K delivers a masterclass in patience and precision, guiding listeners through a three-hour odyssey that is as introspective as it is rhythmically compelling. The mix is a testament to his expansive musical knowledge and his ability to connect seemingly disparate genres into a cohesive, flowing narrative.

In his own words: "The mix was recorded in my studio in Berlin. Beginning with slower Dub Techno, it slips into the early, minimalist 85/170 Drum-and-Bass era, showcasing plenty of those formative highlights before closing with authentic Amen Breaks combining with a sound design that actually anticipates the vibe of some of today’s darker techno productions."

In an intimate setting, Erik Luebs offered listeners a unique live performance created for this moment. Seated in front of his instruments, Erik made time stop and created communion. As we slowly ease out of the warmer summer days, we are delighted to welcome Noah Lyas to the Embodiment podcast series. With more than 15 years of experience in making music and as co-founder of Profundo Collective, he has carved out a space for deep, hypnotic explorations that move masterfully between nuance and vigor.

Noah Lyas reflects on the recording process with striking authenticity:

“During the summer, it gets so hot in my attic studio that making music is almost impossible. Even in the evening, with the windows open, it’s hard to stay focused and attentive while composing; only warm, heavy ambient pads come into being, with crickets providing the rhythm.

This mix was recorded just after all those hot days, when the temperature was finally low enough to dance in the attic again, and to feel what it’s like to be active. It begins calmly, flowing slowly, until the first low notes become possible after which it spills over into rhythmic steps. Just like the transition from those sweltering summer evenings to the creation of this set.”

A fluid journey that rises gently from ambient depth to grounded rhythmic flow, echoing the passage from heat-induced stillness into motion, presence, and dance.

Embodiment 073 - Noah Lyas

As summer's warmth dissolves into twilight, grey clouds gather on the horizon, bearing the whispers of rain and the pine forest's scent yields to the caress of a fresh breeze. We are delighted to unveil Estimulo's latest mix for Deep Breakfast Series, a sonic journey to envelop your senses.

Estimulo is an avid record digger and die-hard music aficionado with extensive vaults of records since the late 80s. In his club DJ sets he’s on the lookout for those special moments of dancefloor salvation, oscillating between Deep House and Techno’s classics and more obscure electronic treasures, with splashes of Electro & Disco / Funk and with an extended broad perspective on genres and epochs not forgetting recent and upcoming gems. It’s not purely a retrofuturistic thing, rather he strives to connect music of different epochs to form a holistic flow. His special passion is to make his own edits / versions of the music he loves. With his label Mixomat Recordings (founded in 2004) he has been putting out early releases by artists such as
Marco Nega, immer.Chic (Workshop), Rezkar (Running Back, Meakusma) and Serendipity/Rai Scott (Inner Shift Music / 2DeepSoul).
His weekly Radio Show (EstimuloShow @ mixomat.org since 2007, also on Cashmere Radio since 2017) is regarded as a mainstay by many in the scene.
The last years have seen Estimulo taking the vibe to places like the US, Chile, Argentina, Australia, UK, France, Canada, Norway, Poland, Ukraine and Jordan on his DJ tours.
Estimulo used to co-run the futura event agency and DJ crew, that has been causing some stir in the Berlin scene with their proceedings in beloved underground spots like ://about blank, Paloma, Horst and Chez Jacki/Maria am Ostbahnhof.

About the mix he said:
"It's like a sequence of childhood memories. You close your eyes and remember science fiction films with the infinite universe and thousands of stars, a summer beach with your parents and siblings, then a spaceship with robots running around excitedly and making beeping noises. A few minutes later, you're beamed back to Earth and standing on the top of a mountain, gazing down into the wide valley, then a long walk through the forest along a mountain river. Or you hear the large church organ. In the end, it's all about aural beauty. I invite this music to give me and all listeners goosebumps. Nostalgia is only part of the equation here; i reckon timelessness is even more important. I hope you enjoy the journey through my memories and moods."

Deep Breakfast 324 ~ Estimulo

Madrid's F-on is a much beloved figure within the Spanish scene, known for his elegant all-vinyl sets and curation behind the brilliant Alpenglühen label among so much more. We stayed in touch after his particularly beautiful set at 2017’s Paral·lel Festival, and I've been looking forward to one day sharing this episode of the series since. Alfonso’s mix is uncanny in its precision and demonstrates a prowess behind the decks that few can match, a soft palette built through veteran and timeless selection. Two hours in and out of focus like rippling dust through which the flow of time slows, a stasis in the stream. Thanks Alfonso!

Boris Rogowski – The Darkness of Future Past

Somehow, Boris Rogowski’s The Darkness of Future Past manages to go from Renaissance and Baroque influences and minimalist piano pieces via Ambient all the way to arena-sized pop music. It has no right to work, but it works perfectly. I don’t know how.
If I had only one word to describe its general mood, I would call it haunting. And the album itself is haunted, too, by the ghosts of the past, of classical composers (Orlando DiLasso, Eric Satie and Alfred Schnittke explicitly, many others lurk in the shadows) and more recent musical specters. It’s called The Darkness of Future Past, and yes, that’s a Twin Peaks reference… but let’s not make too much of it, there are no real connections (I think!) except for a general love of mystery, darkness and beauty.

In contrast to Rogowski’s 2023 album The Waste Land that was largely defined by a good amount of classical rigor, consistent chamber instrumentation and a complete lack of vocals, The Darkness of Future Past is almost loose: We have long, winding instrumental pieces that straddle Ambient (The Past, Like a Strange Bird), Minimalism (The Bloom and the Flutter) and Jazz noir (the title piece). They are humming with sounds and melodies that always seem in a state of either synthesis or decay, giving way to one another or sticking around in the form of eerie echo loops that build up a dreamlike musical structure always on the verge
of collapsing into itself.
Those long-form soundscapes, some of which feature ominous spoken Journal Entries, alternate with solo piano pieces that sound like at least three different instruments—but were, in fact, all recorded with an old upright built in 1906 by some regal German manufacture. The audaciously titled Gymnopedie No. 4 wears its influence on its sleeve—and delivers on its promise: Rogowski’s love, respect and understanding of the original works of Eric Satie shine through in every note. Similarly, the other piano pieces, from the tiptoeing Sleeping Dogs to the dreamy, improvisational One Lonely Autoresponder Message, feel a bit like memory palaces—reminiscent of music that has always been around, but at the same time very much their own beasts.
And then, of course, we have the songs: Nothing Wrong is strikingly beautiful, its sparse musical arrangement serving as the perfect bed for Rogowski’s falsetto and the ghostly choir backing it. breatheINbreatheOUT is downright scary, like a field recording of some strange initiation rite: The words ‘breathe in, breathe out, it’s all right/mankind is no longer your kind’ are delivered in a moody croon that seems to channel the later Scott Walker.
And then, just when you think you have finally figured out how this album works, it leaves you with Them!, a monolithic sound colossus that begins as a shoegaze-y electro pop song and develops over 6 minutes into an arena-sized hymn with an otherworldly female voice lamenting ‘What a lonely world’ over and over. Rogowski did much of the work on The Darkness of Future Past in a desert cabin near Joshua Tree—maybe he passed Coachella on his way back; that, at least, would be a good explanation of the sound of Them!

There is a very clear and distinct consciousness of the past, and there are projections into the future that are as nebulous as they are frightening. The Darkness of Future Past has the power to conjure up mysteries, to shed just the right amount of light on them and keep us intrigued—without ever giving them up or serving us easy explanations. The beauty of the music itself remains a secret, one that Boris Rogowski as its composer seems hell-bent on protecting. After all, no-one needs to know who killed Laura Palmer.

Today’s Deep Mind Music entry is a trip through the depths of the earth from Shoal 🌘🌙

Listening to this set I was transported into another realm of being, taken by the hand through the mists of time, into the molten core of the earth. A transmission from the collective unconsciousness of mankind, sinking into the faded memories of our ancestors. Megalithic drones contrast with intricate moments of delicate celestial harmony, as iridescent shimmers of light glint into a shadowed cave. As the mix concludes, we softly re-emerge, floating on a blanket of rainbow-hued clouds ✨🤍

This mix is a live set made entirely of music composed by Shoal, formed from a series of recordings. It features field recordings captured in Japan, as well as a jam session with flute (Urosh), contrabass (Julian Tjon Sack Kie), and sound exploring a tam-tam gong, all collaged together. Thank you Shoal for this moving and evocative journey taking listeners through the primordial beyond 🌌💠🌀
