“Thank God, Still Have My Soul” is a militant gratitude cipher — a survivor’s chant carved from the wreckage of capitalism, burnout, and systemic erasure. It maps the tension between what’s been taken (time, breath, dignity) and what remains untouchable: the soul. The verses move from economic dispossession to ancestral resilience, flipping trauma into testimony.
Key motifs:
Spiritual inventory after collapse
Surveillance and algorithmic control
Ancestral memory as resistance
Refusal to be digitized, branded, or broken
The hook echoes like scripture:
“They drained the breath, but couldn’t touch the flame… Thank God — still have my soul.”
Story Behind the Lyric
This suite was born from rupture — a response to systems that measure worth in metrics and monetize exhaustion. It’s a ciphered refusal to let the grind define the spirit. The title itself is a clenched-jaw thanks: not soft praise, but a declaration that despite the losses, the essence remains intact.
It draws from E>W. Du Bois’s “brief moment in the sun”
Modern precarity — gig work, debt, surveillance
Ancestral echoes — drum, chant, refusal
Spiritual clarity — what can’t be taxed, tracked, or sold
