"I fell in love with the piano again." The DJ and composer discusses the vulnerability of the creative process, returning to acoustic instruments and touring her latest album.

Laurel Halo has been circling around the club music world for a number of years, but she's only recently entered the echelons of jazz and contemporary classical. Originally from Michigan, she went to music school in Ann Arbor before moving to Berlin, and now Los Angeles, where she composed her album, Atlas—a release that's been met with widespread critical acclaim. She also played alongside Moritz von Oswald in his jazz outfit the Moritz von Oswald Trio, and released a number of eclectic, UK-tinged dance floor records on underground giants like Hyperdub and Livity Sound.

In this RA Exchange, Laurel Halo discusses the new direction of her music and what it's been like to tour it live with cellist Leila Bordreuil. She also talks about her creative inspiration (namely, the Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul and books by surrealist writers like Ursula K. Le Guin and Italo Calvino), the practice of aesthetic minimalism more generally and the methods she uses to create subtle variations in pieces that are slow to evolve. Listen to the episode in full.

"The first time I heard @thelazergazer live was in Barcelona at FOC, and let me tell you – my brain cells couldn’t handle it. I had no idea what was happening, I kept asking myself “how is she doing this?", but my sober ass danced like I’d just been possessed with bass music. When I found out she was coming back to Planeta Za, there was no way I was missing it.

Luckily, I had a shift that night, but let’s be real – work had to wait. I snuck onto the dance floor with every chance I got, just to witness this woman mix an absurd number of genres with transitions so smooth, you couldn’t even tell when one ended and the next began. And the way she kept everyone glued on the dance floor for the entire set, I haven’t seen that for long time. It was honestly one of my favourite sets I heard this year."

Connecting the dots is what drives Runner. Pushing, playing & promoting the low end continuum from his 90s days in the UK all the way to today’s landscape and into the future. Constantly 'going back to go forward' through his #SubbedOut & #237Sessions on @Paranoise & @stegi-radio respectively, the one-off block parties in the ancient city under his banner, the legacy with Dimensions Festival launches in Athens & reppin' the Swamp81 family in the city. 

In the last few years we find him setting up a variety of significant projects with his friends that by the end of 2017 brought us #Shuffle, the party mostly based on ‘superior blend’ DJs mainly from the UK. Josey Rebelle, Jon K, Shanti Celeste, A Made Up Sound, Peach combined with local talent have rumbled the foyer of Mikrokosmos cinema,  #Shuffle's spiritual home. Finally to be able to shake the Romantso basement with the @Swamp81 take over of Chunky, Loefah & Sumgii in 28th of Feb 2020, just-before-everything-shut-down is pure gold. 

Cue in 4 yrs and a pandemic later, it is now 2024 and radio, DJing & pushing the envelope with like minded cats in and out of the city helps to fight attention deficits and focus on the music & the people first & foremost
