Washington D.C. artist soso tharpa explores the theme of intimacy for the latest instalment of Untitled 909's mix series. With questions like 'what does it mean to be intimate? Does intimacy thrive off curiosity? At what point does curiosity end and intimacy begin?', soso tharpa throws conventional mix formulas out of the window to create a session that flickers between the challenging and the bliss, floating through the bass-heavy soundscapes of dubstep, dub techno and some wonked-out techno moments including a personal favourite Mike Parker track.  

This contrasting element of chaos and balance is something that is found within soso tharpa's productions too, like his most recent release 'Fistful of Shells' on Nervous Horizon. The six track EP released in September last year drew influences from bass, techno and IDM and unfolds like an ever evolving journey, continuing to discover new ground as you listen through. Noting DJ EZ's Boiler Room as one of his most formative musical experiences, this moment led soso tharpa down a rabbit hole of bass and garage music, citing that 'something about that swing and micro-riddim spoke to me'. This influence can still be found across his productions, releasing his first track for a Bon Appetit Records compilation in 2019, as well as tracks  on Future Times, Rhythm Section, 1432 R and Human Pitch. Being nestled within the small music community of Washington D.C. has allowed soso tharpa to create a sound of his own, nurturing a slower approach to his output and appreciate every artist that comes through the city.

"Tell us about the mix you've recorded for us."

I recorded this in my living room with a xone92 and 3 xdj's. I mainly focused on atmospheric techno with a few acid and industrial elements. The only intent was to build toward a few higher energy tracks with a smooth, moving, and playful groove. Everything else came together nicely on the fly.
The theme of this mix is my usual MO: a hazy, psychedelic, and mysterious dreamscape within lush, natural terrain (forest, mountains, etc.) I also wanted to evoke recently gained confidence playing on bigger sound systems and gigs out of my hometown.

"Can you walk us through your creative process when approaching a new mix?" 

I spend a lot of time browsing bandcamp via labels, and then I listen to my bookmarks while commuting. I've only recently started using rekordbox to organize tracks. I group them together based on key detect with some attention to genre, energy level, and rhythm. That's about it. The rest was improvisational. I enjoy layering with 3+ decks on the spot when I catch phrases that speak to me.

“Layering with 3 decks on the spot is quite a skill. How do you decide which tracks to layer, and how does this element help shape your sound?”

I prepare based on how I feel about a collection of tracks in an environment. I have a lot of important feelings for music paired with scenery in the Bay Area. Moving through landscapes and interiors while listening to tracks leaves impressions of details like tone, intensity, rhythm, phrasing, etc.
Sometimes certain details stick with me, which leads me to tracks that have commonalities (or polarities depending on how chaotic I feel). I add a few tracks for tonal/rhythmic bridging, which leaves me with a body of elements and phrases for flexible layering. At a certain point, I just try to have fun juggling with whatever I bring to the decks. Looping helps ground me when I’m completely aimless.

“Could you tell us more about your involvement with Club Moniker? How did you connect with the crew, and what excites you most about working with them as an event series and label?”

I started Club Moniker a few years ago with a group of friends that I admire musically. We have a wide range of tastes which leads to unpredictable hilarity. We’re very much a “what if” kind of a crew which is exciting to me. That’s probably why we don’t have a distinct association with genre because we’re interested in many forms of expression. Obviously this leads to many tribulations, but I like the fact that it’s hard for us to conform to something indefinitely. The event series and label is a reflection of that.

Dryland is an album born during an unexpected return to the artist’s roots, in the Friulian countryside: the tracks took shape while alternating with long walks along the grava—the vast stretches of pebbles typical of the North-Eastern plains. In this landscape, only seemingly arid and dry, water flows invisibly underground, only to resurface with power in spring. The pieces of Dryland mirror the nature of those places: solid rhythmic structures, drawing on dembow and reggaeton beats, yet crossed by currents of ambient atmospheres, distant and liquid melodies flowing between kick and snare. The result is a suspended balance between danceability and dreamlike suggestions, between bursts of enthusiasm and shades of melancholy.

Sonambient is the alias of Andrea Buzzi, a producer originally from Friuli and now based in Turin. His sound blends UK Bass, distant dub echoes, and shifting ambient noises. The project was born in 2012, and since then he has performed across Italy with live sets and DJ sets, released music, and collaborated on installations, performances, and sound projects. With the Stasis collective, he curates events that merge club culture and audiovisual experimentation. In 2024 he launched MAREINTERNO, a live series dedicated to intimate forms of ambient music. Over the years, he has brought his sound to various festivals and contexts, including C2C, SYS Palermo, TUM, Kernel Festival, Vorspiel/CTM Festival – Berlin.

Connecting the dots is what drives Runner. Pushing, playing & promoting the low end continuum from his 90s days in the UK all the way to today’s landscape and into the future. Constantly 'going back to go forward' through his #SubbedOut & #237Sessions on @Paranoise & @stegi-radio respectively, the one-off block parties in the ancient city under his banner, the legacy with Dimensions Festival launches in Athens & reppin' the Swamp81 family in the city. 

In the last few years we find him setting up a variety of significant projects with his friends that by the end of 2017 brought us #Shuffle, the party mostly based on ‘superior blend’ DJs mainly from the UK. Josey Rebelle, Jon K, Shanti Celeste, A Made Up Sound, Peach combined with local talent have rumbled the foyer of Mikrokosmos cinema,  #Shuffle's spiritual home. Finally to be able to shake the Romantso basement with the @Swamp81 take over of Chunky, Loefah & Sumgii in 28th of Feb 2020, just-before-everything-shut-down is pure gold. 

Cue in 4 yrs and a pandemic later, it is now 2024 and radio, DJing & pushing the envelope with like minded cats in and out of the city helps to fight attention deficits and focus on the music & the people first & foremost
