What if that real “Indie Sleaze” was the friends we made along the way?🥹

In this episode, I did some live turntable mixing, going back-and-forth between spinning 00’s Electroclash staples and spinning their early 2020’s sonic-equivalents - essentially splitting tonight's setlist into multiple PAIRINGS of 👩🏻‍🎤𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐍👩🏻‍🎤 vs. 🧑🏻‍🎤𝐍𝐎𝐖🧑🏻‍🎤 (see pairings below) - with the purpose of highlighting Electroclash/Indie Sleaze’s reemergence in popular culture this year... 

Like I predicted back in Jan. during my E-Clash Ep. (EP.51 - stream here: soundcloud.com/internetexcess/ep51), “Indie Sleaze” (AKA E-Clash + Bloghaus) has come back this year with a VENGEANCE that can only be satisfied by booze, glitter, and the piss you find on an NYC street corner!🗽🍻

As such, I decided to follow up said E-Clash episode with an update on the E-Clash/Indie Slz scene 9 months later as it rears it’s head again - just like I said it would! But then again…did Indie Sleaze ever really leave?🤔

In this episode, I debate whether Indie Sleaze is even a genre, or if it’s actually just a catch-all term used to define the combination of niche microgenres, graphic design aesthetics (bright bold jewel tones and neon colors, triangular zig-zagging shapes, thin italic font, flash photography📸), and internet communities belonging to a certain time (Myspace era-musicians)…

Hmmm. “A catch-all term used to define the combination of niche microgenres, aesthetics, and internet communities belonging to a certain time”….call me crazy…but doesn’t that perfectly describe the term “Hyperpop” as well??😱 

In this episode, I argue that a lot of the so-called “Hyperpop” scene that we discuss so often on this show has sort of always been an extension of the E-Clash scene of the early 00’s (albeit w/ some IMPORTANT differences: namely, H-Pop is a maximalist approach to E-Clash’s DIY dance-punk minimalism). Further, I argue that the H-pop artists that were defined by maximalism 5-10 years ago are rapidly stripping back their sound and metamorphosing into Electroclashian Revivalists…🎸

The similarities between Indie Sleaze and our current era of internet excess is made apparent in this episode of Internet Excess. Hell, the very name of this show (a title I created to be a better summary of what “Hyperpop” really means) is essentially a synonym for the term “Indie Sleaze” itself: an embrace of in-your-face, no-holds-barred, era-defining niche/independent music that revels in coming home with glitter on your face, in being messy, in being…Brat…👀

Yes that’s right - Charli XCX’s “Brat”🟩 has been at the forefront of the Indie Sleaze revival, with Charli embracing the spoken-word-sing-rapping of E-Clash and Bloghaus stars like Uffie, the disaffected verb listicle of Daft Punk’s “Technologic” on songs like “Guess” (“Buy it, use it, break it, fix it” / “Try it, bite it, lick it, spit it”), and the flash photography photoshoots done by none other than TheCobraSnake.

But she’s not the only one! Snow Strippers embrace the goth, 8-bit bops of duo Crystal Castles💎, The Dare repurposes the funky, punky, minimalist blasé of LCD Soundsystem, provocateur Brooke Candy revives the come-on rapping of Peaches🍑, Frost Children embrace the shouty hedonism of 00’s scenesters 3OH!3, and more! “Dimes Square” NY Scene-sters have dived head-first into the hedonism of the 00’s indie NYC scene.🪩

2024: the year Hyperpop went Indie Sleaze!✨
