Mounties (the band) is often called a Canadian indie supergroup because it's made up of an all-star lineup from the Canuck rock 'n' roll landscape: Steve Bays (from Hot Hot Heat), Ryan Dahle (from Age of Electric and Limblifter) and solo rocker Hawksley Workman.  The night I hung out with Steve and Hawksley in Steve's SUV, the guys told me that all Mounties tracks begin with a box of wine and a jam session. (How awesome does that sound?) Steve and Hawksley were very talkative and it was hard to get them to stay on point once they started on a topic.

What's the best (and worst) part of working with other successful and established musicians? Which other supergroup didn't work for Hawksley and Steve (as fans)? Who would they like to add to thier supergroup? How sexy is Mounties bassist Parker Bossley? What's the best brand of box wine to drink while jamming? We chat about all this and more!

Reuben and the Dark is a indie rock band (with tinges of country) from Calgary fronted by Reuben Bullock. I met Reuben while we were both in Banff last summer. He took a break from recording to join me in a farmer's market to chat about his record Funeral Sky. The big story behind this record is that he worked with Chris Hayden from UK mega-group Florence + the Machine on a few of the tracks. 

Somehow I get shy but nice guy Reuben to talk about... The meanings behind his songs... His secret past as a skateboarder... British duo Bondax is Adam Kaye and George Townsend. These house music producers started out in 2012 with the surprise single "Baby I Got That" followed by many more dance floor-friendly tracks, including my favorite "Gold." Strangely enough, it's now 2016 and still Bondax haven't released a proper record.

I met with Adam in his hotel room before a DJ gig. He was sipping on a smoothie while he waited for the car that would take him to the club. Why haven't Bondax released a proper record? When was the last time the tour manager caught Adam and George having a spontaneous dance party in the hotel room? What's the story behind my favorite Bondax track "Gold"? What do Adam and George talk about in the wee hours of the morning when they are all alone? Where the hell was George? These are all questions I asked Adam (and more.) Listen to our chat!

I met up with Dean Baxter and Jake Boyd (the band's rhythm section) one sunny summer day in Banff, Alberta. Dean and Jake had just had some "snacks" and were ready to enjoy the day. 

Ottawa's power pop quartet Hollerado are known just as much for their creative marketing stunts as their music. Their 2009 debut full length, Record in a Bag, came in a plastic bag full of confetti. The first print run of their 2013 release, White Paint, was hand-painted by the band and their friends at a Warhol-esque, weekend-long, painting party. Hollerado also offered to write a custom song for the first 200 fans who pre-ordered White Paint. The band then released all those custom songs on their 2015 record 111 Songs.

Dean and Jake were definitely in a vacation state of mind when we hung out, but I got them to talk about craft beer, board games, badminton, going from being a club band to a stadium band, and what to do when band life gets really really hard. Hollerado are working on their next record so I also try to get them to tell me what their next marketing stunt could be. Listen to our fun chat!

I hung out with emerging Prairie singer-songwriter and storyteller Andy Shauf one dark and stormy night. Andy's work is most interesting when he is weaving engaging tales of small town life. His 2015 record, The Bearer Of Bad News, is a great collection of stories about drug addicts, murderous lovers and other desperate figures clinging to the margins of life. 

This year Andy Shauf signed to Arts & Crafts Records  and Anti-Records, so his upcoming next record should take him to the next level. 

The rain tapped away on the van roof as I chatted with this sweet but shy guy about everything from being a teenage fan of MXPX to his love of the clarinet to how to craft a good narrative in a song (and how autobiographical his stories should be) and much more! Listen to our chat.

Nashville rock band JEFF the Brotherhood started as brothers Jake and Jamin Orrall back in 2001 when the guys were in high school. Six records later, the band was signed to multinational record label Warners, but JTB were dropped just days before their second record for Warners (Wasted on the Dream) was due to be released. 

I hung out with the Orrall brothers outside the Biltmore last time they were in town. You can hear the touring members of JEFF the Brotherhood and the band Bully partying in the background as we talk.  

How do you make sure you get drunk enough to stay loose on stage, but not too drunk and sloppy? What does "The star was the beef" mean? You may know Jay Malinonwski from the 2000s reggae-rock band Bedouin Soundclash. When that band took a hiatus, Jay took some time off. He started researching his family's past. This work led to his solo debut double-length nautical concept album “Martel.”

When I hung out with Jay Malinowski at a Gastown coffeehouse, he had been holed up for weeks writing his book, “Skulls & Bones” (an illustrated novel and companion piece to Martel). Vancouver's latest experimental post punk buzz band Freak Heat Waves is actually from Victoria on Vancouver Island.  There are a lot of stereotypes about people from the Island (that they are all stoners). Steve (guitar/vocals) and Thomas (drums) from the band did nothing to dispel those rumors when we hung out in their van one rainy night. 

I did get them to talk about many interesting topics: The difference between living on Vancouver and Vancouver Island. Kraftwerk concert souvenirs. Touring with bestie band Each Other (Lefse Records). Steve's robotic voice. That time their buddies from  Viet Cong (Jagjaguwar/Flemish Eye Records) asked for help hiding a body. And much more!

The Interview Show with Freak Heat Waves #204

Indie icon Dan Boeckner is perhaps best known for his role in the legendary mid-2000s post-punk indie rock band Wolf Parade. Since Wolf Parade (sadly) went on hiatus, Boeckner was involved in a project called Divine Fits (with Spoon frontman Britt Daniel) and he started Handsome Furs (with his ex-wife Alexei Perry). Currently, Boeckner has a new band called Operators. Last Gang Records will release the Operators debut full length, Blue Wave, on April 1, 2016.

I chatted with the entire Operators line up including Boeckner (on vocals, guitar, and synths), drummer Sam Brown (New Bomb Turks and Divine Fits) and electro-wiz Devojka. Somehow I get this trio to talk about everything including Louis CK, using sex to sell, how Dan and Sam met, being a complete dick, Dave from Japandroids, how collaboration works in Operators, and the beauty of starting over again.

I think this is the only interview I've done with a group hug. You'll have to listen.

Thunder Bay born Coleman Hell is another internet music success story. He put his banjo-infused dance track “2 Heads” on Spotify and soon it was at the top of the streaming service’s charts. Before he knew it, Coleman Hell had an international record deal with Columbia Records.

I hung out with Coleman for a bit right after his soundcheck the last time he was in Vancouver. (You can hear him catching his breath at the beginning of our chat because he had literally run offstage.)

The Interview Show with Coleman Hell #206

Backstage at the Royal Canoe show was a bit of a madhouse as all six members prepared for the show. Those 12 hands become a well-oiled machine onstage to execute this Winnipeg genre-smashing band's weird and wonderful songs, but in the green room six band members plus beer quickly becomes a party.

Lead vocalist Matt Peters and I left the busy backstage area at Fortune Sound Lounge and went for a bit of a walk on a nice summer evening. We ended up at Vancouver landmark Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, which was a perfect place for a chat. 

While Matt and I enjoyed the tranquility of the first Chinese or "scholars" garden built outside of China, we did the interview. Here's a few of the things we chatted about. What it's like to describe your musical genre to border guards (and why this can cause trouble). How songwriting is like group therapy. Getting your gear stolen while on tour and finding it in your heart to forgive thieves. Approaching songwriting like hip hop producers. What my favorite Royal Canoe song "Bathtubs" is about--one of the best song origin stories ever! What piece of equipment is The band's secret weapon. Listen!

The Growlers call the strange mix of garage, psychedelic, and surf rock that they make "Beach Goth."  The term started from a combination of the surf sound on the Growler's 2010 Hot Tropics EP and the dark themes (like poverty, death and addiction) that singer Brooks tends to sing about. But soon for the band, the Beach Goth label grew to become a blanket term for what the band is about:  budget recording--the band recorded in a minimal home studio--budget surfing--surfing on a crummy board--and beach living--even thought the band never lived on the beach. Beach Goth eventually became an annual Orange County music festival that the Growlers put on and headline.

I hung out with Brooks and his dog Jonesey at the end of an era for The Growlers. The band used to live together in a camp (which included their recording studio), but tragically the camp had burned down. Sitting in the alley behind Vancouver's Rickshaw Theatre, I got Brooks to open up about bringing girlfriends on the road, the fire that destroyed the band's home, if writing songs for your girlfriend works to keep her happy, how to keep peace in the tour van, the difference between drinking beer vs drinking whiskey onstage, and much more. Vancouver's Jett Pace aka Old Man Canyon started out as a sort of indie folk artist and he found quick success with his first release the Phantoms & Friends EP. Many songs off that record ended up in poignant montages on several popular television shows (for example MTV's Awkward, Showtime’s Shameless and Bravo's Suits). After a break, Old Man Canyon returned in 2016 with a new record Delerium (his debut full length). This time Jett has added synthesizers to his sound while leaving the folkier stuff behind. 

I hung out with Jett before his record release party. While we chatted, his phone kept buzzing. Many family members needed directions to the show. After two records with legendary rock band Weezer, Matt Sharp quit as Weezer's bassist. He wanted his next project to be less a traditional rock band and more a chance to collaborate with all the musicians he admired, so he formed The Rentals. Even if he couldn't get his collaborators to leave his or her band permanently, Matt could rent them for enough time to make some music together.

As you can imagine, after three full length albums, Matt Sharp has ended up being the only constant in The Rentals project. He assembles a new set of collaborators each time he records an album or goes on tour. Fun fact: actor Maya Rudolph, of Saturday Night Live and Bridesmaids fame, also handled keyboard and backing vocals for the group's first tours in support of the debut album, Return of the Rentals. (Check out The Rentals 1996 video for "Waiting" to see Maya in action.)

I hung out with Matt Sharp one nice afternoon in the alley behind Vancouver's now closed Electric Owl. Matt was in town to promote the newest Rentals record, Lost in Alphaville. Montreal's indie pop, electro-orchestral band Groenland started when Jean-Vivier Lévesque (piano/composer) started hanging out in the coffee shop where  singer Sabrina Halde worked. The band's unique and whimsical sound is centred around Sabrina's powerful voice, which Jean-Vivier proudly compares to Adele. 

I hung out with Sabrina and Jean-Vivier in their hotel room right after they released their first full length record The Chase. We chatted after a long day for the band, so the band's English was failing them.

Indie folk rocker Passenger aka Mike Rosenberg is a member of a very exclusive club. His song "Let Her Go" has surpassed one billion plays on YouTube. But Mike wasn't an overnight sensation. After his band folded in 2009, Mike traveled the world singing for money on sidewalks. He practiced his craft as a solo singer-songwriter, releasing several records himself, until his song "Let Her Go" caught fire and changed his life.

I hung out for a bit with Mike while he was doing a short small venue tour in advance of the release of his latest record Young as the Morning Old as the Sea. Indie folk rocker Passenger aka Mike Rosenberg is a member of a very exclusive club. His song "Let Her Go" has surpassed one billion plays on YouTube. But Mike wasn't an overnight sensation. After his band folded in 2009, Mike traveled the world singing for money on sidewalks. He practiced his craft as a solo singer-songwriter, releasing several records himself, until his song "Let Her Go" caught fire and changed his life.

I hung out for a bit with Mike while he was doing a short small venue tour in advance of the release of his latest record Young as the Morning Old as the Sea. We talked about his time on the streets busking, keeping his songs simple but effective, surviving a band breakup to go solo, and more. Listen to our chat.
