It’s been over 5 years since Interworld Media began. To celebrate, we bring you Energetics – a compilation of tracks from 16 artists who have interacted with and participated in the Interworld over the years, from Sheffield and beyond.

These tracks cover a range of energies, mirrored from the spin, roll, pitch and yaw of the mind’s turbine as it responds to the senses, conjures up a force field and spreads out in all directions, like the tendrils of an orchid.

The Megamix is a fully mixed C90 of the compilation, allowing for a frictionless transfer of energy and an overall high-quality experience.

Released on tape and digital, Focus 27 finds Phoneutrian considering the possibilities of an afterlife, with these thoughts informing the various evocative synths, found sounds and eerie spaces. Its title comes from the Monroe Institute’s categorisation of states of consciousness (or ‘Focus Levels’):

Sercle + Remixes, Interworld’s first compilation album, explores how a set of source materials can be processed, played with and, in some cases, completely obliterated to produce wildly different results. A fresh take on the ‘remix album’, these 13 tracks are sequenced to emphasize the unique approach of each artist while also forming a cohesive whole.

The release starts with the four source tracks from Phoneutrian. Dreamboat and Simile are forward-thinking electro tracks, with infectious melodies that flutter around razor-sharp acid basslines, while Sercle and Crystal Mashup are longer forays through heady, disorientating realms, powered by breaks-y rhythmic workouts.

Things then start to unfold. Heavy Lifting refracts the source stems through crystal lattices of code, all teetering on the brink of chaos in a virtuosic build-and-release of energy and tension. Boris Cobblestone couples meticulously crafted breaks and pads with gritty washes of noise and off-kilter melodies, while Mystique brings the dance with a huge tune that’s equal parts club stomper and otherworldly dreamscape. Sleepsang’s electroacoustic-inspired piece shifts through lurching hyperobjects into spiralling hypnosis, setting the scene for SCAPA’s exquisite cut of deep, sci-fi electronica, all liquid bass and eerie melodies.

trendphazr comes straight in with an irresistibly bouncy bass tune, full of sparkly SFX and crunchy earworms, before Lawrence King takes things higher with a euphoric jam of pumping bass and warm, woozy tunes. hellocatfood keeps frantic drums and constantly evolving strings grounded through an earthy bassline and tight sound design. The final track, from Moonsleep, recontextualizes melodies from Dreamboat into a rainy, melancholic haze, ultimately fading into field recordings taken on the London Underground and bringing us back down to Earth.

QBRNTHSS (pronounced “quebrantahuesos”, meaning “bearded vulture” in Spanish) is the alias that Ramon Casamajó, musician and computer scientist, uses for his solo works focused on electronics and live coding. As QBRNTHSS he released a split LP (Harry Dean Stanton, Call It Anything Records 2019), and is actively involved in the TOPLAP Barcelona collective. He has played in international events and venues like Ars Electronica 2020, Sónar VIU 2021, Iklectik London, Algorithmic Art Assembly 2022, as well as in online events hosted by the international TOPLAP community. He is part of Turing Tarpit, a duet focused on free improvisation with whom he has released several works and played regularly in Barcelona’s experimental underground circuit. He also runs the micro record label Call It Anything Records.

“The Magic Words Are Squeamish Ossifrage” (the plain text solution to many cryptographic challenges, a tradition originated in a challenge set by the authors of the RSA encryption algorithm in 1977) is his first full-length album as QBRNTHSS, the result of more than a year of live performances and rehearsals using Tidal Cycles and Supercollider (live coding languages) as main instruments. Aesthetically it’s a mixture of synthetic textures, noisy ambients and broken rhythms.

Loosely based around a quote from the Diamond Sutra, Dew Drop World is the first release from @olson2323 on Interworld. Using a collage of manipulated and time-stretched samples, Olson creates introspective ambient loops which are both vivid and emotive. Each piece is a reflection on the beauty of everyday life in all its ups and downs – an attempt to find balance between the joyous and the melancholy, and to find meaning through sound in the ever-shifting sands of experience.

Our debut release from the mysterious Bogle House sees a story told through folk, horror, spoken word, modular synth and more – moving through portentous drones, organic soundscapes and tender moments, especially the closing piece 'I Am Buried Now and I Wish To Move On'.

From Bogle House: "The following explores the postmortem fate of a cunning woman who awakens to find her spirit sealed within the trunk of a great oak tree. Her body, in death now fused with the oak itself, has come to represent a fertility spirit and minor tutelary deity of the surrounding farmlands. Unwanted protector of the valley and Lady of the Harvest, she is now forced to stand watch over the fields of the very people who murdered her for nothing but the fallacy of being ‘a witch’.

Dedicated to those that suffered witch trial and spirit sealing ritual. May their souls be free to finally rest in peace."
