Musika Nova is a St. Olaf College student organization created for the purpose of sharing new and experimental music in our community. Composers, performers, and fans of new music are all welcome to join. In addition to working with guest artists, the group meets weekly for discussion and sharing of new works, and holds several recitals, concerts, and get-togethers throughout the year.

We aspire to foster a healthy community of self-motivated artists within the St. Olaf community. We work in a way that tries to fill in the gaps at St. Olaf for composers, musicians, and other unique sound artists. We hope to present innovative, engaging, and creative works in ways that allow for inclusivity and broad appeal.

Lauded for providing “a once-in-a-lifetime experience for adventurous concertgoers,” Zeitgeist is a new music chamber ensemble comprised of two percussion, piano and woodwinds. One of the longest established new music groups in the country, Zeitgeist commissions and presents a wide variety of new music for audiences in the Twin Cities and on tour. Always eager to explore new artistic frontiers, Zeitgeist collaborates with poets, choreographers, directors, visual artists and sound artists of all types to create imaginative new work that challenges the boundaries of traditional chamber music. The members of Zeitgeist are: Heather Barringer, percussion; Patti Cudd, percussion; Pat O’Keefe, woodwinds; and Nicola Melville piano. Todd Harper is a musical ecologist from St. Paul Minnesota.

Katherine Bergman is a Minnesota-based composer who draws on literature, environmentalism, and found materials to create work that has been described as hypnotic and visceral.
