Program note:

“End of summer, light between your eyes” deals with memory: not as something which flows easily and envelops you like a dream, but as a series of sensations, zoomed in, never able to regain the momentum or consistency of experience. 

Only the essence of the feeling, the strange details that remain after years, more present than the significant moments which always seem to disappear and reappear without reason, without a thread to hold them together. 

It deals with memory as distraction, as the inability to stay present in a moment, as a kind of zig-zag through realities both present and obscure; as something which binds together and something which is irredeemably isolating, which constantly presses on the ability to share anything at all.

inti figgis-vizueta creates music that carefully balances experimentation and practicality. She likens her compositions to plants which have the ability to grow and change when different people performing them. And in the last few years her music has been championed by an extremely wide range of musicians from Roomful of Teeth to Ensemble Dal Niente to the Kronos Quartet. NY-based composer inti figgis-vizueta (b. 1993) braids a childhood of overlapping immigrant communities and Black-founded Freedom schools—in Chocolate City (DC) —with direct Andean & Irish heritage and a deep connection to the land. Her work explores the transformative power of group improvisation and play, working to reconcile historical aesthetics and experimental practices with trans & Indigenous futures.
Recent highlights include the Carnegie Hall premiere of her string quartet concerto, Seven Sides of Fire, written for the Attacca Quartet and American Composers Orchestra; performances of Coradh (bending) by the Spoleto Festival, PODIUM Festival, and Oregon Symphony; and the REDCAT premiere of her evening-length show Music for Transitions, created in collaboration with Grammy Award-winning cellist Andrew Yee.

Upcoming projects include clay songs for Kronos Quartet’s 50th Anniversary, a new Carnegie Hall-commissioned work for Ensemble Connect, continued development of Earths to Come for vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth, and a new piano concerto for Conrad Tao and the Cincinnati Symphony, conducted by Matthias Pintscher.

inti has held faculty positions with Luna Composition Lab (21-24’), Wildflower Composers (20-22’), Fresh Inc Festival (22’), and Atlanticx Composition (21’). She regularly lectures on her music with recent visits to Harvard University, The Juilliard School, Peabody Conservatory, and CalArts, among many others. inti has curated programs for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Green Umbrella series, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra Current Series, Wild Up’s Darkness Sounding, and American Composers Orchestra SONiC Festival. She is the 2024 Robert M. Trotter Lecturer for the College Music Society 67th National Conference.

inti studied with Marcos Balter, Felipe Lara, Donnacha Dennehy, and George Lewis. Her mentors include ﻿Tania León﻿, Nico Muhly, Angélica Negrón, Derek Bermel, and Andrew Norman, among many others. inti honors her Quichua bisabuela who was the only woman butcher on the plaza central and used to fight men with a machete.
