This piece was commissioned by Orchestra 2001 as part of their “In the Key of El” project, which brought together local composers to write pieces inspired by murals that were visible from the Market-Frankford subway line (also called the “El”, aka the elevated line). I chose one in West Philly by Steve Powers (pictured below), which was right around the corner from where I was living at the time. I loved the imagery of the two outstretched arms, which could either be interpreted as one person grasping at the air in an attempt to hug something unseen, or two people reaching out for one another but just missing each others embrace. Hold Tight! attempts to depict the sensation of trying to grasp on to something – physically or metaphorically – that keeps constantly shifting, changing shape, making it all the more challenging to hold on.
