my weird indie songs

I was listening to my playlist in preparation of posting and had the new-ish Jay Electronica track (kinda) on it and had a strange feeling. I took it off.

I love Jay Electronica, when the highly elusive raper was putting out more regular, for him, tracks it was an interesting time in my life. I first came across Jay in 2007 when I heard Act 1: Eternal Sunshine (The Pledge). I was getting ready to move to Africa. I was in a whimsical dreamy state of mind. Act:1 complimented that, it was magical, fresh, new. Pulling the backdrop from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and sampling dialogue from Willy Wonka it was the perfect soundtrack for my own trip into crazy-land.

Fast forward to today, I saw the track pop up on Soundcloud and got instantly excited. "New Jay Elec!" I squealed with glee as I hit play. It instantly brought back those feelings of yesteryear, but something wasn't quite right. I found after listening a few more times, was that it felt like old Jay, solid Jay, the Jay I knew those 7 years back. The problem is, I'm not the same Sev. I like my music to grow and evolve, it's one of the reasons I do this weekly. I'm constantly looking for that new sound that's going to resonate with my current emotional and mental self. Does it mean I don't get nostalgic and throw on classic records? No. But it also helps me understand why don't understand people who only listen to classic rock.

The original song has so much energy and depth, I really wanted to try to harness that energy and add and build on to it using my own style of production.
